I'd hate to say it but the worlds got more to worry about than some 18 year old on forums mouthing off. We all know what j1mmy's like and take no notice.

Nothing's "just the internet" any more - it's so woven into everyday life as a major source of information. There's been a lot of this kind of "everyone knows what j1mmy's like" and OK on here maybe people do. But actually not everyone does - we had a thread go up on the Trust forum on Saturday night from someone enquiring about this, basically saying "although I don't know all the facts, there's no smoke without fire and this leads me to seriously question Paul and the Trust's integrity". The lie had also spread to a few non-Town messageboards by then as well. These things then have a way of echoing back as fact, doing the rounds in pubs etc. The fact you deny it gets ignored and before you know it "everyone knows" that the Trust are a bunch of thieving gits and the Red Army Fund is a sham.

How far am I supposed to let this lie - which don't forget amounted to that I was personally ripping off fellow fans and commiting the criminal offences of theft, fraud and embezzlement - go before I did something to stop it? When I initially posted that these allegations were just lies and could be libellous, j1mmy just posted back taking the p**s - he wasn't going to take notice until someone made him do so by proving they were serious. He now knows I was serious.  There comes a point where you have to say enough is enough, no matter how many away games he goes to.


To be fair, on the basis of meeting him for about 5 mins, yes he did seem to be quite all right.


First, making a token payment by way of compensation is pretty standard for settling libel cases. And it's not like I'm benefiting personally - a donation to the Red Army Fund that he sought to damage in the first place struck me as a kind of poetic justice.
Second, the amount was arrived at after speaking to him and establishing roughly what his disposable income per month is. We've agreed he can pay it in chunks and it won't take all his dosh, but it will hurt a bit - its supposed to. Had he been older or earning more or whatever the amount would have been more. And to put it in perspective, if this had got to the stage of the solicitors actually having to start chasing him, it would have cost a hell of a lot more than 100 quid. You're looking at most of that just for the initial letter.

Kid or not, there comes a point as part of growing up when he has to realise that actions have consequences, even if he did think he could do what he liked hiding behind his keyboard. His actions in putting this libel out in the first place could have had very major consequences on the Trust and me personally - the consequences he has had are minor by comparison. I'd say he got off lightly - if he'd done this to someone more malicious than me they needn't have offered him a way out via an apology and retraction, they could have completely taken him to the cleaners.

Bottom line is, I suppose, how much shit do you expect me to take just because I try to do my bit via the Trust to help the club? It's easy to be "ah its only j1mmy/the internet" when you're not the one being falsely accused and watching a completely malicious lie (which could affect your job prospects etc as well as ruining the hard work of dozens of volunteers who've helped collect for the Red Army Fund) spread across half a dozen internet sites in a few hours. Like I said, there comes a point when you have to say enough is enough.[/b]
