So they are threatening fuel protests again. What do people feel about this? Discuss. Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Asher on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 09:33:31 I need my car for employment so will pay even £2 a litre. FACT
Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: STFCBird on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 10:04:39 I hope they don't blockade again as I have to travel a fair way to get to work and back and I haven't got the time or energy to waste sitting in a queue for petrol. I obviously want the prices to go down! I went to tesco in abingdon to fill up monday night and it was 95.9 p a litre, so I waited to get it in wallingford as it is only 89.7 there, but by the time I got there it had gone up to 93  today when I went past it was up to 95.9. cunts
Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: land_of_bo on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 10:12:22 I've considered swapping my Audi A4 for a smart car - the fuel goes a lot further for your money, but do I want to drive a tonka toy? Not really, No. But I begrudge paying £50 to fill my car up and getting about 350 miles out of a tank full!
Fuel prices are ridiculous, have they shot up this much across europe as well? Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Titch on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 10:18:37 Not sure about that to be honest. There is much more the government could do but they dont! They always just blame it on oil prices. Of course partly it is but all they simply need to do is a staggered type taxation system and everybody would be happy!
Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: land_of_bo on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 10:21:52 Yeah oil prices are high, but the tax on fuel is astronomical, much higher than anywhere in the whole fecking world. We ge ripped off left, right and centre in this country, especially with all the taxes we pay.

Post by: land_of_bo on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 10:33:58 That's if I drive cautiously! I only do about 20 miles a day but all urban, don't get over 60 mph and spend half the time sat in traffic. ARSE!
I even considered a fucking scooter, but then though of the ridicule and the fact I'd probably fall off and freeze in the winter so quickly dismissed the idea! You must drive a thirsty motor? Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Asher on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 10:48:58 its a three litre car, drinks more than a certain town player and that says a lot!
Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: walrus on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 11:26:48 It's fucking rediculous - as a student how am I supposed to afford 30 quid to fill up my car which will only take me around 300 miles, driving conservatively. My folks have just got back from Costa Rica - less than a tenner to fill up a Rav 4.
The government are taking the piss on taxing fuel, as it seems to be going up at an alarming rate. When I first got my car in December 2003 it used to cost 25 quid to fill up, compared to today's 30 quid. That's a 20% increase in 18 months. Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 11:32:26 I put Shell Optimax in my Type R and it's 97.9p a litre.
I get about 340 miles from a tank (£55) Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: pumbaa on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 13:48:54 I'm temporarily resident in the USA thanks to work :D and it cracks me up when stupid insular americans start complaining about the cost of fuel. I take pleasure in informing them of how well off they really are compared to UK, that starts to shut them up.
That said, when I arrived here in January, the cost of a gallon was $1.85, its now averaging around $2.99, so thats a substantial hike in 8 months. Good job I bought cars that do more than 25 mpg  Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Spud on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 14:08:11 I dont drive but the prices everybody are willing to pay is fucking ridiculous!, everybody moans to themselves and does fuck all about it, so im glad that the Truckers are leading the way to try and get the price down.
In the UK we pay 80% Tax on Fuel. Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Titch on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 14:11:15 I thought the tax on fuel was 67%? could be wrong of course

Just curious - on the balance of things I'd take either, but naturally I'd rather it were 17%. Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: land_of_bo on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 14:27:20 As in 17.5% - about the same as VAT.
Yeah sorry, smart arse! As in 50% less than 67% ! I'll try and be clearer next time  Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: BrightonRed on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 14:27:22 The way I see it road tax should be scrapped and tax on fuel should be increased significantly. This way those people who use the roads the most will be paying more in tax than those who use the roads very little, also people would think very carefully before purchasing a petrol-drinking urban 4x4 and fuel economy would become one of the most important decisions before buying a new vehicle - forcing the manufacturers to invest more in fuel efficient vehicles and alternative fuels.
The Government could introduce concessions for those that use a vehicle as a key factor in their employment. It would probably require a little bit of fine-tuning until the Government was receiving an equivalent amount of revenue. It would certainly be a lot cheaper to implement than the ‘pay-by-the-mile’ scheme the Government has been piloting. Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: DV on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 15:40:48 the problem is, no matter how expensive the fuel is....we have to buy it, we cant go without and we cant go and get it cheaper else where...
Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Kinky Tom on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 15:42:58 That's the bitch about phantom benefits I'm affraid. Something needs to be done though.
Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Spencer_White on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 15:50:04 I drove up to Blackpool and back on £43 worth of fuel with 3 others in the car. The equivalent in rail fairs would have cost £200.
As far as Im concerned the cost of fuel could double and it would still be cheaper than public transport. Moving around is getting more expensive. If you cant afford it, you cant go. DEAL WITH IT! Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 16:07:00 Its unbeleivable price. Way to omuch and they charge it to get people of the roads. Why is it that in Europe unleaded works out at about 40p a litre, while in the states its less 40p a gallon!!!

BR - it's a fair point, but the ones with the big 4x4's are already loaded and are most equipped to deal with a massive fuel-tax hike. Why the fuck should we pay so much when other people in our so-called European State pay so much less? Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: Spencer_White on Thursday, September 8, 2005, 01:07:31 Why do you think Im on more than £5 an hour?
I work 48.5 hours a week basic. And no I dont have a tranny van (I wish I did). TheKingCY has one. Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: STFCere on Thursday, September 8, 2005, 12:50:28 with the rise of china and india as major economic forces in the future, rising oil prices will always be a feature of our economy. There is plenty of oil to go around, speaking to an oil specialist she says that oil could last for hundreds of years. However, uncertainty will always keep the price high. Having said this, the government should help by cutting fuel tax to offset the rise in the price of crude oil. To state that there is nothing they can do is utter nonsense.

Title: Fuel Protests... Post by: janaage on Friday, September 9, 2005, 10:36:03 Fucking protest, I hope they bring the country to it's knees again. This fucking government need to get in touch with reality. I had to pay 102p a litre yesterday, coming back from Scotland. Fucking disgrace - cut the tax Mr Brown.
I supported the protesters last time and will support them again if they choose to protest once more. |
