Title: Food recommendations
Post by: Leggett on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, 11:31:43
Bit last minute, but got tomorrow off work to spend a bit of time with the other half, we're thinking of going somewhere nice for lunch in the early afternoon, any recommendations? Cheers!

Best pub grub i've had around Swindon by miles is at the Falcon at Poulton, been there several times and always had fantastic food, they do a lunch menu with 3 courses for £16.

Swindon has never really been a lunch sort of place beyond the chip shop....or the Woolies cafe/ BHS equivalent and they're gone.

Los Gatos in its old guise more than able to cater for the small numbers whose lifestyle was a bit continental.

The middle classes, wouldn't be seen dead in Swindon and the burgeoning underclass, dwindling working class don't do lunch.

So, your best bet is out of town, and there's plenty of gastro pubs if it's your thing.

An in town punt, might be the Los Gatos replacement, Helen Brownings.  Not been but there's usually a few in, big on meat.

Mentioned above, Moshan Island Grill have a very good lunchtime deal, though you may need to check that they open at lunch time on Thursdays.

Slightly further afield but the Red Lion in Cricklade is hard to beat, both for their food and their beer.

I'm sure Froggy will be interested in discussing the demise of the traditional Gallic long lunch....but neocon capitalism demands work not pleasure.

I read that originally as Gaelic lunch, which is a whole different proposition?

There's always the Royal Oak at Bishopstone which is also Helen Browning's farm. A regular choice of mine for lunch when dining in the Swindon area.

Sorry I couldn't respond earlier, but lunch merged into dinner, as we celebrated the simple pleasures of good living and Spring dresses. Neocon capitalism hasn't altogether subjugated France yet.

I've not had a Pizza Hut pizza for ages but i used to think they were the best of the bunch. Better than Dominos.

Do you still have a takeaway every week?

1 a week usually nowadays. Sometimes 2 if the Mrs doesn't do a roast on Sunday.

Both pretty shite in my opinion. Think they're a waste of money really.  I'll be sticking to the Morrison's create your own ones. Cheap and not bad at all.

If I could make one like the curry houses do I would. I used to try regularly but gave up as they never hit the spot like a proper bought in one does.

I know what you mean.. There is something different, and I do love a good takeaway curry. There's no way I could manage one a week though. My bank account would cave in even if my body didn't!
