Title: Peterborough United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: DarloSTFC84 on Saturday, February 27, 2016, 00:02:06
So what do we reckon?

Good form to continue for me, 1-2 Swindon, Ajose x2

We're due a win at their place, and they certainly aren't any better than us. 1-1though  as we never seem to win there. Think I've seen us win 1 in 7 visits. Good day out though for those going.

This is a fascinating fixture. We're in a relegtion battle, they're going for the PO's, yet should we win, we'll be above them.

When they outclassed West Brom  a few weeks back on national TV, only to lose on pens, Westley and the whole Posh set up, were put forward a as model, to which the rest of us, lower league scuffers, should aspire to. Power would probably agree.

Posh got 4.5 mil for Dwight Gayle, we got 1.5 for Charlie Austin.

My first away game for a while, two high scoring and loose defending sides, i'm hoping for an explosive 4-3 victory.
Will no doubt finish 0-0.

OK...so we are in a relegation battle but will go above a side who are going for the play offs if we beat them.

Good work Reg - you have finally blown my mind

I will say for the third week running...A scrappy 1-0 (Ajose) will do me...

Go above them today and they'll still be going for the playoffs while we'll still be in a relegation scrap - Reg logic.

Posh only had 1 win 9 games, lost 5 of those and have lost the last 3 in a row with 2 of those at home.....2-0 defeat.

Peterborough have openly talking about making the Play-Offs whereas Swindon have been openly talking about avoiding the drop.

Right, Reg?

Not too far to travel today, Posh have been awful since the WBA game, only 3,500 turned up for their defeat on Tuesday & fans I work with expecting defeat.  I reckon 2-2 in an entertaining game.

Peterborough can't be a lot better off than when they sacked Ferguson so a 2-1 win for us could have Westley looking over his shoulder. Ajose and Barry with a screamer

I wonder if Reg ever accidentally drops out of character? You know, enjoys a sunny day, laughs at joke, feels upset at the sight of a single tear on the cheek of a golden child?

He must be more Partridge-like - an extension of the real 'Reg', but turned up to 10.

I have a follow up question -

If we win and go above Peterborough will it be the case that...

A) We will still be in a relegation dog fight and they will still be play off contenders even though we are above them.
OR
B) Will you Reg, have to concede that we are play off contenders?

For the 3rd season in a row my Dad's friend who is a Pboro supporter is taking us corporate style, so a free day out makes it feel better already, and a nice sunny day here.

I'm much more confident than a month ago, he went Tuesday against Oldham and said they are poor atm, so i'm going for a 2-1 win with Ajose scoring at least once.

Pre match preparation in The Draper's Arms.

Remember a New Years Eve trip here in 1982.
Finished 1-1, not sure what the future England goalkeeper thought of being serenaded with "Seaman give us a squirt"

Obika & Ajose to score today, but we will concede as well, so maybe a draw.

Yes, a classic example of Schrodinger's cat.  Both us and Posh are simultaneously in a relegation battle, and going for the PO's, until you look.

Looking at the table and our remaining fixtures, wigan/walsall aside, we aren't playing sides up the top end of the table. Win today and i may actually start thinking we could have a very good late push and that last PO spot.

Everybody seems to have forgot we are Swindon and don't do things the easy way. I dreamt we won 3-1 there, but Swindon logic tells me Posh will be fired up for this and have a point to prove after their midweek upset. So I'll give the token prediction that we could be on the end of a tonking today.

Half time 1 down

Started poorly, improved a bit as the half went on (we actually had some attempts on goal)

Ref is the definition of a homer, l think I have an idea of what McAnthony does with the transfer fees they receive ;)

We were never going to keep a clean sheet anyway so 1 goals not a disaster

Need one of Williams half time team talks so we can start playing & score 4 in the second half :D

It's starting to look promising, first time we've appeared on the first page of the Sky Div 3 table since about August.

However, we've needed PO form to get out of trouble, so probably best to keep that approach going, until season's end and see where it takes us.

Looks like we got our stress in early this season. There's something to be sad about no pressure mid-table mediocrity. Lets get to the 52 ((c)Reg, 1937) and give a few promotion chasers a bloody nose as we go.

We put on a similar run from the relegation places in 2002/3 under Kingy when we looked doomed (Coppell, Mel Machin and Jan Molby didn't fancy getting us out it). We kept that run going to March 03 and then started to drop off again.

We have got a lot of games against play off contenders in March and April so very much in our own hands. Those late points thrown away at home against Port Vale and Oldham could be costly in a play off chase.

I thought we were unlucky to be 1-0 down at half time.
Seemed a soft penalty.

Anyway, who knew Ajose could take free kicks? Scored one and was close with 2 more. Doughty, excellent scored the winner with what looked like a cross/shot which sneaked in.

Posh missed a couple of good chances but we worked bloody hard and an excellent 3 points.

If we beat Donny on Tuesday? Who knows!

Felt we could win it even in the first half, the change of formation at half time worked wonders and Traore was excellent. As above, Nath was outstanding. Sendles-White made a great block on the line and we were dogged during Peterborough's spell during the last 10 minutes.

Not perfect by any means today but we're still a threat going forward which is hugely important considering our defence.

There have been too many times when we've struggled to beat a seemingly poor Donny side for me to think anything other than a very difficult game.

Was that the game under McDonald when we didn't have a shot and they scored in the 88th minute or something?

Bloody good result today.  Have been out, so didn't check the score until after the final whistle.  Lovely stuff.

The best thing is our ability to come back from being behind.  I remember a time not so long ago when we went months without that happening.

I've been trying to visualise the goals from that game, to little effect.  I do recall a Shakes goal, where he shanked a cross and it happily sailed in. Might have been that game.

Ross McCormack scored for Donny that day, later to go from Leeds to Fulham for 11 mill.

That turned out to be quite enjoyable in the end after a pretty dire first half. Fair play to Williams for changing the formation - Drissa looked lively and we looked a different team second. We rode our luck at times though to be fair - twice in the second half I was 100% we'd gone 2-1 down - the second occasion being all of a minute before we went 2-1 up. Whoever said the ref was a homer, come on - we got away with quite a bit today.

Ajose's goal was an absolute bute. Swindon just don't score goals like that - the bloke is on fire. Whatever jiggery pokery Power got up to with that deal, it was well, well worth it.

I was completely unaware until I read the team sheet later that no.50 for them was Toffolo - bizzare.

My first away league game of the season....last minute decision last night.

Very poor first half...with exception of Vigs.

Ref was totally shit.

Don't care if it was a penalty or not, losing the ball and cry babying to the ref as they broke is unforgivable.

Second half was totally different.  Really went at them and panic set in!

Ref was totally shit but for them instead.

Couple of wins and then we can start experimenting.... Get in...

Jutty and I spoke to Mac at the Sponsors night about the game.....he reckoned we had a couple of half chances....we said we must of been having a piss at the time.

I was fucking freezing too as I remember... The game that is...

The very same.

donny away Easter Monday 2013, rubbish game, we barely string three passes together. Didn't go today but great to hear that cunt on talk sport who follows posh having to announce we'd gone 2-1 up. Since Wigan at the end of October, we've taken 32 out of 51 points which is some turnaround, keep that up for the rest of the season, we'd end up on about 70. It's some ask to maintain. Nobody's going to fancy playing us though and no reason why we can't push on well into the top half which would be a great achievement all things considered. Can't wait to see the boys next week at Oldham. COYR!!

A great result & 2nd half performance.  It's already been said on here, but how refreshing to have a plan B, I was pretty despondent at half time trying to understand how a strong team on paper could struggle so much, but Williams saw it too.  Traore made the difference & the formation made for a much more balanced line up.

Doughty redeemed himself after a poor 1st half & BOO who I thought was shocking both came out 2nd half & gave Posh all sorts of problems down the left.  The highlights show a lot of Peterborough chances, which on reflection was how it went, but after the break I thought we were dominant (last 5 minutes aside).

Nathan was outstanding again! And Ajose worked hard & scored a cracker, but Williams got it right by changing formation & bringing on Traore.  Our defence held up well towards the end & although Posh are extremely lightweight up front it was great to see a determined and strong defensive unit, giving it all for a result.

Went back to Drapers after the match & Posh fans not happy with Vigs, who apparently taunted them after each of our goals, to which I just shrugged & grinned, like Posh Red, there are gloating rights on this one & I'll wear a red tie to work on Monday.

Looking forward to Oldham if we pick up on that 2nd half performance.

Bringing Drissa on at half time changes things. They didn't have a clue how to deal with him and he ran the show.

Posh had a goal disallowed and then we go up the other end and score the winner. About time luck went with us!

He was extremely good but faded at the end. Master stroke by Williams.

Rang my old man tonight, he's getting on a bit, but always been a fanatic. Bit worried now as he said "Ling has really turned us round" He did sort of redeem himself when he said cracking free kick from our striker,(didn't remember Ajose's name) but he's have never missed a manager/major thing leaving before. Guess what i'm saying is, he's gone fucking mental since he moved to Wales, nothing to do with old age..

he's still  sort of right though, although I know that's not what he meant.

Ling saw after one game that one up top was stupid and played 2. And Williams has stuck with it.

Williams has completely turned things around. I mentioned it in another thread, he had limited involvement up until Cooper left and our form since then has been excellent, all with a team that has pretty regularly included Brad Barry and Anton Rodgers along with a few other players labelled as complete dross on this forum (although to be fair, I've also read on here that Ajose is shit).

After the Fleetwood game, several on here were claiming that relegation was not only a certainty, but also likely to happen next season as well!!!!

I was thinking recently that it must be rare to have a first team manager, assistant and goalkeeping coach with zero professional games between them?

Luke Williams is (probably) our first permanent manager without a professional football appearance since Sam Allen, which is a crazy thought (I have no idea what Fabrizio Piccaretta did before coaching so it could include caretakers too).

They're doing a good job, long may it continue.

I think having Balmy and Rodgers on together when defending a slim lead should be avoided unless absolutely essential. Luckily it didn't matter this time.

There's being a bit miffed. There's thinking "shit, we might go down". Then there's going "SUCCESSIVE RELEGATIONS ARE INEVITABLE"

The first two are pretty reasonable trails of thought.
