Title: Weekend in London - Tips Needed
Post by: RobertT on Sunday, April 5, 2015, 00:15:18
Ok, the context:

My 40th Birthday with 6 blokes who all think we are still 30
2nd Bank Holiday weekend in May
Saturday sorted - Rugby at Twickers
Arriving Thursday mid afternoon - probably crawling around London Bridge/Southwark/Waterloo areas, drinking establishments need to be not too stuffy (no real ale guys) but not looking for a club night out.
Friday - nothing planned all day, looking for a more central London late night out here, again, not trying to pretend we are 20, but do want a good party feel.  For the day, something to do in London beyond the obvious stuff like the Eye, Tower, and so on.  Probably low budget for the day, mid range max for the evening.

Consider semi decent places to eat, no Michelin stars needed but we can find a TGI's on our own.

The NYC threads tend to do well, so over to our travel experts.................

For low budget day stuff there's the museums in Kensington.

We ended up in The Griffin on a stag a little while back. It's not as pleasant as the website might make it look, it was actually quite grim.

Looks like it's been refurbed in the last year or so. My visit must've been before that.

Belgos in Covent garden for a bit of grub / dining / fruit beers and schnapps.

Great Menu reasonably priced and fun ambience.

China Town is great for good cheap food. Loads of buffet style restaurants. The best ones are easy to pick out as they're used by the locals.

If you want something a bit away from the typical tourist sites, the South Bank has got tons of good boozers, especially around Borough Market, which is co-incidentally a great place to get some grub if you get the munchies during the day. I'd suggest you start in the Mug House or Market Porter depending on whether you want to begin civilised or a little bit less so. If you get through all the ales in the Porter you're off to a good start.

River boat from the Tower to Greenwich is a good little trip, with some nice pubs and a food market there+ The Cutty Sark of course.

Belgo's - This looks quite a decent starting point for the Friday evening I think, cheers.

Just to be clear, there will be no museum's :-)

Anyone know what St Katherne's Dock is like? worth a trawl, or meh?

Southbank is on our travels for Thursday evening, we'll be sipping a pint or two in the Thirsty Bear on Stamford Street for novelty purposes (poor your own pint on your table).  Any other pubs worth a visit while we are around there?

oooh, and a lunch time pub that serves homemade pork pies and the like from glass bell jars on the actual bar would be nice.

St Catherine's Is nice for a quick look, but nothing more really. The pub there is quite decent, but pretty pricey.

This is very good and will be open by then, Brixton market is also worth going to for food/drink if you can tolerate the hipsters.

It's been touched on allready, but a pub crawl from Tower Bridge to Westminster Bridge takes some beating, some great pubs along the way, and some street food in Borough Market (great Paella in a Spanish joint).

As you will pass it, a trip up the Shard is well worth it, if the weathers good - will only take 30-40mins of your day.

If you want a trendy night out, then Shoreditch/Hoxton is pretty good - walk up from Liv Street or Old Street

oops - it's the weekend after the play offs, not sure why the Bank Holiday came to mind.  Liking the street feast thing and one of our group has a thing for speedboats :-)
