Without being boring, there are three types of writing in Japanese (am fairly sure it's the same in Chinese), with the primary one being hiragana.  This is used to write all words.  Kanji is a sort of posh, show-offy way of writing, and more old-fashioned and traditional.  After a word has been written in hiragana, it can be converted by word processors to kanji so not 100s of symbols are needed.

Incidentally, the third language is katakana used for written western words integrated into their language: e.g.: Hanbaagaa (hamburger), Koora (coke)  :|

Wake up at the back!

I can speak Japanese and a bit of mandarine Chinese.  The problem with mandarine Chinese is that each word needs to be pronounced with a certain emphasis.  For example, the word "ma" can mean you, horse or mother in various contexts depending on how it is said.  I.e.: with a rising tone it means you.

It's great being Reg  8)

How good's your japanese then Walrus, I started teaching myself Japanese, with the Teach Yourself book and cd.  Quite surprised how easy the basics were to pick up.  Not as easy as Swedish, the verbs make swedish so easy to learn!!

Hej da.

Lady at work I sit next to is Nigerian, tried to learn a bit of that and it's really hard. The pronounciation is the most difficult bit.

I had an e-mail from someone in Nigeria last week saying he'd heard I was looking to go into Business! and to contact him to see what money I could get out of it.

Deleted that straight away.  I used to work for a bank in Fraud and the Nigerians in London were the worst by a long way, luckily the lady at work is fine.
