How did you get playing? I used to play as a kid but our cricket club shut, I'd like to give it a try again. I don't know how crap I am though  8)

I played on Sunday....and should be the next one.

I've a mate who's skipper and I make up the numbers if needed and available...spent most of Sunday in the pavilion watching the Test though, as we batted first and I wasn't required, which suited me just fine.

Bishops Cannings Cricket Club formed in 1989 and my dad was one of the founding blokes

I'd always go and watch him, then once i could walk joined the new youth setup, progressed from the u7's right up until the u16's and senior side

My Dad was a regular for the local side, i got involved after gaining interest watching England on the telly. Still fairly useless, i probably don't play regularly enough to get any good at either discipline, but i am an excellent fielder 8)

There's gotta be loads of clubs around your way SY......probably full of middle class tossers mind....I recall some years back playing at Williamstrip, which was this huge house up near Coln St Aldwyns in Glos.

Had a cricket pitch in the grounds....its now owned by Sir Tim Rice...which is probably why he bought it....that'd be a good side to involved  with.

Calne is an ideal place to play at, not too competitive, its all good fun.

Goatacre want me to join them, but they all seem so serious over there, all well and good, but thats because goatacre have such a good history behind them.

I really want to play somewhere I can find out if I'm still any good because it might turn out I'm rubbish. Can I just walk up to a club and say I'd like to play?

I played for them 2 games last season and they said that if I wasn't going to take it seriously then I was not suited to their team. Considering I took 5 wickets and scored 60 odd runs in the 2 games I thought they were a bit stupid.

it is abit of a joke sometimes at calne, its ran very weirdly and not very well.

i remember last season struggling to get a game, was all aload of rubbish! gave them a chance, they heard i was moving so i was put in the 1sts a few weeks ago and opened the bowling. wondering if it will last though!

I did a post about this start of the cricket season...guess you were thinking of exams then....

A forum cricket team has to be a better idea.....Boeta can be captain, Johno can chuck pies, DMR is a useful all rounder and R4E can do the fielding.

Has the advantage of being a long game given ample opportunity for consumption of substances in interesting forgotten corners of Wiltshire.

Bird can do the teas

SY could umpire although standing for a couple of hours at a time may be problematic.

Dazzza I'd see as the fella who turns up at the pub post match with a couple of fitties, just to show a bit of willing and would turn out if completely necessary.

OF has to be useful as an ex public schoolboy.....can purvey googly and Chinaman being left handed but doesn't go on about it.

Yeovil I see as scorer......

Asher certainly wont be involved and can't see Dex on a cricket pitch....Marie I suspect is very good, and could if persuaded keep wicket and bat at 8.

Whits.....would act as fixture secretary and treasurer turning out reluctantly......Magic Roundabout will sign up for the tour to Amsterdam, as its a favourite destination for club sides.

Ralphy and Sadie will find a quiet corner to watch and roll about in the grass.

Simon Pieman wont be around as its in the hols.

Jan Aage.....may be a player but wont admit to it as cricket is an English game.

Blinkpip will bat three, and shock everyone with his mature cover drive.

Piemonte....will expect to bowl first change but throw a wobbler when Boeta decides the pitch is taking spin and brings on OF.

Ben Wah Balls will just wonder why Kingy hasn't been picked, but take a fifer and score 50.

OJ will be unavailable due to a near death experience brought on by septicemia through an infected toe.

OST will be OST.

Spacey having turned out for Ciren will prove to be a hostile pace bowler, if a little erratic....Mrs Spacey will have to do teas as Bird will be behind the pavilion with Blackcurrant neglecting her responsibilities

Kinky Tom will provide Caribbean atmosphere.

  STFC Village will field.

Nils will do iimpersonations of Ole Mortensen..bowling at Queen's Park Chesterfield

Obviously, SY will now want to play

playing for spye park on saturdays mate- i've plyed my trade in divisons one and eight this season

nice, i play for calne 1sts sometimes, same league as spye park. the tree though on the pitch is annoying! and the 3,0,0 sounds like my batting figues, but more than just two 0's.

Title: People who play cricket...
Post by: DMR on Tuesday, August 16, 2005, 23:31:38
 that tree is most useful when it's pissing it down

cracking place to play is calne, the only downside being the fact that the pitch is seperated from the pavilion by about 50 yards of tarmac if I remember? Cleaned up most of my studs anyway.

i'll always remember hitting courtney earl for 3 sixes off the last 3 balls of our u16 game a couple of years ago

thankyou, even though i was playing in that game, im thankful. he truly is a big headed knob.

Yeh, there is the tarmac between the grass and the rec club. the pitch in general isn't really that great and you cvan never tell what is going to happen on that square. consideing its in the middle of a public park, it gets walked across all the time.

he has taken enough wickets recently. he always seems to break the opening partnership in his 2nd/3rd over. where as im at the other end just keeping runs down, but never getting a wicket!

Title: People who play cricket...

I used to watch my Dad play and when I got to about 12 or 13 I was asked to play whenever they were short.
Then I started going to nets and played more regularly and got better!!!

Johno. Okay we take it kinda seriously but we all accept its not the be all and end all. Its a good laugh and a great club to play for! Why do you think half our players live in CALNE?! Because its a good atmosphere. And we are going up!

i'll have you know i used to open the batting for my school. played a fair bit this summer with my mates, and have seemed to have lost the ability to play off the front foot while my square cuts and pulls have magically blossomed.

practiced the old bowling a bit too. very erratic but i just tell em its me playing mind tricks because ill invariably get one beauty out of 300 balls. not part of the bowling attack but i could possibly add a collingwoodesque change with a Bowled e-tow caught village at deep mid wicket
