Title: Swindon Town v Peterborough United Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 00:00:01
The Opponent:  Peterborough United

Looking back to the 1st game of the season I seem to remember us giving a pretty decent account of ourselves at London Road and this season seems to have followed in the same sort of vein, playing some nice football but not always getting the results we deserve. We now find ourselves facing The Posh for the first of 3 fixtures in a short space of time, each with thee own potential rewards. Let’s start with the 3 points today please, our season is not over yet, even if the latest transfer talk hasn’t got the pulse rate N’gooing.  A lot of teams around the top have had sustained periods of form, it has to be our turn soon and getting a positive result today could be the catalyst needed to get us up the table and firmly on our way to Wembley. Peterborough are decent, they started this season as one of the favourites for League 1 and have proved to be true to this although 3 league defeats on the bounce and a lucky draw in the FA Cup against Kidderminster says this lot are beatable. We can still beat anyone in this league on our day, we will miss 1 or 2 players, no doubt about it, we have the testicles for it, take note Mr Cooper and show us you have the testies to match.

Peterborough, a City not dissimilar to our town of Swindon, make the journey to SN1 this afternoon, (along with Posh Red one would imagine). With a population of just over 200’000, Peterborough is home to one of the largest concentrations of Italian immigrants in the UK. This is mainly as a result of labour recruitment in the 1950s by the London Brick Company in the southern Italian regions of Apulia and Campania. By 1960 approximately 3,000 Italian men were employed by London Brick, mostly at the Fletton works. Peterborough has its fair share of famous births including that of footballer David Bentley, Andy Bell of Erasure fame, world famous astronomer George Alcock and Henry Royce, Co Founder of Rolls Royce. It also has a few notable names that have called Peterborough their home for years, such as Ernie Wise, general tosser Adrian Durham, and Jimmy Savile, who spent years raising money to open a new children’s ward at the local hospital. Ta-daaa.

Where the opposition gather –  Visiting fans take the piss out of the magic roundabout shocker.

http://www.theposhforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24379

Last 6 – WDWLLL (5th on 39 points)

They have served us both – John Sheffield, Kevin Dearden, Nicky Ajose, Claude Gnapka, Mark Cooper, Don Heath, Steve Jenkins, Lloyd Opara, Fred Laycock, David Ball, Bobby Barnes, Kenny Alan, Graz, Trevor Benjamin, Sol Davis, Jim Barron

The Odds -  Swindon 13/10 Draw 5/2 Peterborough 23/10 If you fancy playing it safe with a draw then a 1-1 at 7/1 with Ladbrokes could be worth a shout.

The Son Says –  Hmmmm, they ain’t bad are they he says. 3-2 win.

The Prediction – We will throw everything at them today, and despite the obvious talent they have in the team we will win 3-1, goals from Pritchard, Storey and Ryan Mason. 8'055 with 404 from Posh.

And Finally – Interestingly, Peterborough is the largest town or city in the UK without any local radio of its own, although it is covered by four local radio stations and one regional station.

Good write up Shaw Rosso

Interesting you should mention the local radio angle, as I've been listening to  a show called DoomWatch on Peterborough FM in recent months. I'm very surprised that a small enterprise espousing fairly controversial views has secured an FM license.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jui9atfcR90

2-2, Swindon to lead twice, 7,908, a respectable 622 from Posh. And we'll dick 'em in the JPT.

I like Peterborough..despite my mother being convinced they were our ultimate bogey team because we lost to them twice
within 3 days in 63. We may be the only two clubs relegated for financial irregularities, when plenty of others have been up to creative accountancy..share a common bond in a sizeable number of Poles living in the conurbation...and have a unique early sacred feature on the doorstep....in their case Flag Fen in ours...the Broome monolith and the Day House Lane stone circle.

Gone for a 2-2 draw, but I think it very much depends upon what side we field.

Did'nt Pritchard spend some time with Posh last season? thought they tried to sign him at the start of the season but lost out to us. Anyway,2-2 draw with goals from Branco and Storey

Fuck it, 2-1 to us and Darren Ferguson has to be put to bed by his nanny when he develops a nasty case of colic. Whiny little shit.

I reckon we'll make about 8000 today, with a showing of around 500 posh chaps.

Shall be listening on the train up to London. COYR.

Got a soft spot for Peterborough due to all my mothers relatives coming fron all round the area. Watched them many times over the years and thank god they don't have Terry Bly anymore an absolute goal machine when I first saw them in the sixties.

Their form isn't great so hoping we win, will make next week more bareable.

Must be 352 I'd have thought, but does that mean Pritchard as wing back like you say?! Plenty of attacking quality in that team though. Do like the Ranger/N'Guessan combo.

It sounded as if we decided at half time that we would sit back and defend. Commentators kept mentioning that we were defending too deep. First leg at Boro will be important. Hope we dont go up there to defend or it could be all over before the 2nd leg.

Cooper:
- Not one of our best performances
- Very resolute
- Peterboro very good
- Pleased about grinding out result from a match we shouldnt have won
- Keeper and back four amazing
- Branco received lots of praise (as did Ward)
- Can always see a goal coming from our team
- Hall at left back. Thought Boro threat at set pieces. Wanted more defenders.
- Touchline antics. Boro keeper coach. Handbags.
- Ranger. Contribution: Scored and stops ball coming back. Tougher opponent when he plays
- Power comments: Nile went to Cooper and wanted to apologise to players. It was put to players do they want to give him a chance. They let him know they want him on the pitch but they feel very let down off of the pitch
- Words are cheap. Cooper has heard it all from Ranger before. He's been on time 2 days on the trot, if he is for 3 it'll be a miracle!

I would have given him mom.  He made 2 or 3 goal saving challenges that if timed wrongly could have been penalties.

Good all round performance, battled well against a pretty good Peterborough team.  The sending off and touchline melee did us a favour though. Stopped the play when we were under a lot of pressure.

Second home game in a row where the best team lost!!  We just defended too deep and allowed them to win everything in midfield putting pressure on us.  Why not keep a man up in the centre circle when we are defending corners, ball just kept coming back.  Positives, we won, Branco played well, negatives, thought Pritchard was poor, kept losing possession.

Branco was great. Totally different from the Branco I saw play in the (was it) JPT.

Pritchard had a very good first half. Didn't get into it in the second.

We were totally on the back foot in the second half. Thankfully fatty got sent off and then Fergie Jr and co further helped disrupt there rhythm by charging our bench. Good counter goal by Kasim, who is coming back on form.

The best team won the game, which is after all about sticking the ball in the back of the net. They looked alright at times but how many saves did Wes really have to make? Pritch loses the ball trying to do too much at times I agree. The wee man also does a lot of good things that go unappreciated. Thought his tackling back today was superb for a player of his size/ilk.

We shouldn't have won that game.

Branco made a lot of great last-ditch challenges (one sticks out in particular when their main striker was through on Goal), but he was only having to make them because he was constantly out of position.

All the players ran up to Ranger when he scored.

Tomlin is a cunt. Talented, but a shite attitude.

We will get dicked if we play like that in the JPT final.

Ground out result. Well taken header from Nile who was mobbed by tne rest of team after scoring, read into that what you will.
2nd half was all posh and was a well taken Kasim goal slightly against the run of play that gave us a cushion.
We lived dangerously at times defending deep but thought Ward and Branco were a better CB pairing. Branco in particular had a great game and showed some passion out on the pitch, not sure about Hall as an LB but he did enough and his height helped in set pieces.

Was deffo a second yellow/red after a blantant push off the ball/field when ball had already gone out for a throw,  didnt see the dugout clash but plenty got involved.
Decent atmosphere today esp in TE.
Its been said before but I fucking hate drums at footie games, mind you was the only noise you could hear from them.
I expected more of them as plenty in the pubs beforehand.

Stevenage away tuesday may well be last time we see Ranger anyway as doesnt his trial start on the 20th  :hmmm:

Agree with all that, but we made it hard for ourselves. If their equaliser had stood, we'd have lost that and we were fortunate to get the second against the run of play. Bit worrying how deep we defended, seemingly without trying to push them out in the 10 mins or so before Kasim's goal - we invited them on to us and seemed like just a matter of time before they got one, but in the end we held on long enough for Kasim's great little run and still think we offered more than Peterborough overall. Branco looked good, Hall seemed to struggle at left-back, perhaps unsurprisingly

Enjoyed that. Agreed we defended too deep in the second half. Thought Branco had an excellent game and was unlucky not to be MoM.

The linesman on the Arkells side was mostly useless. A number of times they were offside but he never put the flag up, yet he had correctly flagged for offside (there were two players off) for the disallowed goal, and Tomlin getting sent off, even though you could argue it could've been a straight red for a push. Their coach was correctly sent off for coming onto the pitch and taking Luongo out which started the fracas on the benches.

It nicely spices it up for the JPT games.

And amazingly we scored from a short corner !!

Nearly forgot to mention...someone please shoot drummers at football matches.

A draw would have been a fair result. For all their huffing and puffing Boro only forced one decent save from Wes. There were some pretty good last ditch tackles though from Nate Dog and Branco. I thought Boro played a brand of football very similar to us.
Kasim was very lucky to get away with a two footed challenge just before the first goal. their player then launched into ours. From the corner their players were all trying to foul Hall and he was blatantly held but it took attention away from Nile who was unmarked to stick it away.
Kasim's goal was pure quality. theirs was pretty good too.
There were a lot of positives in this game. Branco had a good game and I'd like to see him given a run with Ward at centre back. Kasim was my MOM before he scored the goal as he gave us a physical presence and was everywhere breaking up play and starting it. Ranger, yet again had a very good game. If only we could put someone else's brain in that head. We ground out a very good result against a very good team.
Now for the negatives. At times Ward looked slow even by his own standards. Apart from Kasim I thought midfield was pretty crap. Pritchard needed to be subbed earlier as he was continually running into trouble and giving the ball away very cheaply when we needed to keep it.
Tomlin was a fat cunt who lost his head. Good player but a dickhead.

Great win today - we looked up for it today and got our rewards, even if we rode our luck a bit. Thought Ranger played very well and deserved his goal, Kasim was my MoM for his strong tackling and finish for his goal, followed by Rossi Branco - who may I add looks very improved since I saw him against Plymouth in the JPT! Excellent result, take it into Tuesday and also in the minds of Peterborough we CAN beat them ahead of the JPT area final!

P.s-Touch of class by Nicky Ajose clapping us in the Town End, would love him to come back but if Nile is staying + the new lad from Brighton/Miles back on the scene then very slim that will happen!

Just back.  Delighted with the win.  I thought we just about shaded it, but Peterborough were one of the better sides to have come here this year.  Full credit to the lads for taking their chances.

A very close game and, yes, if luck had been different we may well have been looking at a different result.  But these things even out over time.  We seem to be grinding out a lot of close victories by one goal margins at the County Ground this season.  We're doing a job, and fair play for that.

Just a quick final word about Yaser.  His goal was a delight.  The way he lost his man was highly impressive.  And he then just seemed to create acres of space as he advanced towards goal.  Clever football from the Iraqi Pirlo.

Right.  I'm off now for a 9 mile run.  This will be fun.

Think it was Danny N'Guessan to be fair but Yasser said the run off the ball gave him the space.  Yas actually received the ball from a short throw just inside the Posh half, made initial space with a feint to go past the first marker then, thanks to DNG's run causing two backtracking defenders to hesitate a moment, took immediate advantage to continue his rightward run out of their reach before cutting a shot back ruthlessly past the Keeper.  Worth waiting for on YouTube for our Iraqi poster.  Crucial goal in deflating Posh ambitions which could otherwise have become overwhelming.

On another note I thought Ward and Branco might merit preference to Ward and Hall though I have read one criticism of Branco's positional sense even if Posh would have surely caused problems to most League One defences today?

Thought Branco did a great job today - Assombalonga would and has caused problems for better defences than ours all season,
We looked a better defencive bet with him at CB than Hall, though am sure at times we had all three in that position.

I saw that player. He was with the subs at half time. It certainly wasn't Ajose though - he was dressed in blue.

For our Iraqi friend:

I saw him too.  It was a bid odd, almost like he was trying to hide his face.

Ajose's car was parked with the Swindon players, which also seemed a bit odd.

Iv seen a number of goals this season where wes doesn't even bother lifting an arm and stays rooted to the ground. I know he had little chance with the borough goal but atleast through yourself at it. A chip against leyton orient?! And the freekick against brentford stick in my mind but there is probably a few others.

How heavily have Peterborough invested, out of interest?  (Sounds as if they have spend a lot.)  Is this season a case of go up or blow up?

What happened to the TV screen in the Arkells/Stratton Bank corner and the electronic advertising boards?

Don't know about the TV screen but the fact that the advertising boards were not working was a definite bonus for those of us in the DRS!!

Cheers for posting the video. Chubby McLardarse seemed to run the show for Peterborough, loved his blatant shove on Kasim right behind the lino as well  for the sending off, beautifully done.

No footage of the benches fighting unfortunately...

Interesting day on Saturday. Got hit by a taxi before the game walking from the Grove (luckily jumped and despite being knocked to the floor wasn't injured at all.

Felt a bit fortunate to come away with 3 points. Big Nile starting was a surprise but he took his goal well and then when Posh were starting to put us under pressure (despite not really creating too many clear cut chances) the Iraqi Pirlo scored a good second goal. Their goal 10 minutes from the end was a world hit by a centre back which 9 times out of 10 goes into the Town End, but we held on for 3 crucial points against a good side in Peterborough.

I thought Branco did well and seemed to block everything. Good passionate celebration in front of the DRS at the end. Having Ranger able to hold the ball up as well as defend makes such a difference to the side. Its going to be an interesting January for sure!!

Ended the night plastered at 2am in London, my mate left his wallet in the taxi, but he was good enough to come back and return it at 6am remembering us. Top bloke!

A good, enjoyable game between two quite evenly matched sides.

As we arrived, walking along the front of the DRS, Ranger was signing autographs. "Still here? Good!" says SWMBO. Ranger just gave a slightly embarrased smile. I will fess up and say I am glad we still have him. His contributions on the pitch are game changers.

My only real criticism of us is that we are defend too deep. The calls of 'Get it forward' have changed to calls of 'Get forward!'. We invite teams to present a threat.

Pritch has some sublime skills and I love to watch him- 90% of the time. For the remaining 10% I wish he would take the simple option. He's like a fucking terrier when he loses out though.

Onwards and upwards  :pint:

Trying to work out what kicked it all off! Far as I can see, Luongo touched the ball a bit hard and that's it!

He tapped it away to stop them playing it, he should have got booked really but the hilariously OTT reaction probably prevented it.

What is it with goalkeeper coaches :)

I know last time I mentioned this I was given a stat that he had a very high number of assists this season, but for me Pritchard's final ball/decision making are frustrating at times.

Absolutely agree. Loads of skill and great to watch (At times). Just wish he wasn't such a greedy bastard!

If I had to pick one player I really enjoy watching then its Kasim. His ability to make space for himself is very impressive - probably best since Hazard / Hoddle. His awareness is second to none on the team and he has a great football brain.
I'm not fussed about Pritchard. He has skill and can beat players but on Saturday he was a liability in the second half. I don't see a £1m player in there at the moment.

They're like kamikazes. They know they won't be missed on the bench so they're the ones who always take one for the team.

Yep when he is playing well Kasim is a joy to watch. A great find and hopefully Barker can make as big an impact. On Saturday's showing Branco looks good as well. To be honest our permanent signings have impressed more than the loanees for the majority.

And that could be the single biggest influence on the future of our club...

Come to mention it I cannot remember Fraser getting any punishment by the PA/FL from his 'sending off' against Port Vale.

Would anyone have noticed if he was missing from bench for a couple of games? I wonder how Wes coped without his coach shouting "Save it!".

We've not been let down in the technical area entertainment stakes this season where, for all his detractors, PDC had set a really high bar.

Although you're right about Luongo, it looked like Luongo tapped the ball away from the Posh GK coach and another Posh tracksuit who had come to collect it in the STFC technical area.  They were outside of their own technical area in which direction Luong had helpfully tapped it.

Moral of the story for Town Players?

1   put dosh on second half red card,
2   kick ball into technical area when Town losing initiative and leading
   3   stand well back,
   4   collect 3 points
