Title: Swindon Town v Coventry City Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Saturday, December 21, 2013, 00:30:14
The Opponent:  Coventry City

Darn Gremlins. Here we go again. So Coventry, the city that was the 3rd most bombed city by the Luftwaffe in WWII, are today’s opponents. A good following from Warwickshire is expected today with the Arkells corner sold out but heavy rain is forecast which could make the journey back quite soggy for some of the visitors today.  It seems to have been a fairly quiet week all things STFC, with recent weeks in mind, hopefully this is a positive thing as today will undoubtedly be a test against a decent Coventry outfit.  Its fair to say Coventry have had their fair share of struggles over the last few years and currently find themselves playing their home matches at Northampton Town’s ground, Sixfields. Maybe its just me but I can’t think of Sixfields without thinking of the mad Italian running across the pitch.

Interestingly, Coventry has a large ethnic minority population, making up 33.4% of the population as of the 2011 census.  The ethnic minority population is concentrated in the Foleshill and the St Michael’s areas and Islam is the largest non-Christian religion, but the composition of the ethnic minority population is not typical of the UK with significant numbers of other South Asians.  Coventry is well known for the legendary 11th century exploits of Lady Godiva who, according to legend, rode through the city naked on horseback in protest at high taxes being levied on the city folk by her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia.  According to the legend the residents of the city were commanded to look away as she rode, but one man did not and was allegedly struck blind. He became known as Peeping Tom thus originating a new idiom, or metonym, in English. Leaked documents claiming Sam Cam is planning a similar protest have so far proved to be thankfully unfounded. Coventry has a rich manufacturing history with such motor giants as Peugeot, Jaguar and Triumph although the last Coventry machine tool manufacturer was Matrix Churchill which was forced to close in the wake of the Iraqi Supergun (Project Babylon) scandal. It had been owned by the Saddam Hussein government, via front companies, and closed amidst much controversy and bad feeling. It seems Coventry is fairly popular on an international basis being twinned with no less than 26 other cities.

Where the opposition gather –

http://www.skybluestalk.co.uk/threads/40232-Swindon-Pubs-*non-made-up-new-stadium-thread-alert*

One of a few uninteresting threads regarding today’s match. Apparently The Merlin is pricey.

Last 6 – WDLLWD (Currently 11th on 20 points)

They have served us both –  Dave Bamber, Ernie Hunt, Miles Storey, Abdul Said, Trevor Benjamin,  Tim Flowers, Jake Findlay, Frank Peters, Danny Ward, Paul Trollope, Graham Oakey, Arthur Beadsworth, Ady Williams

The Odds -  Swindon 6/4  Draw 9/4  Coventry 9/5  The return of Leon Clarke sees him priced at 11/2 to score the 1st goal, the same as Nicky Ajose and Dany N’Guessan.  My long shot of the day has to be with Coral. Ryan Mason to score 2 or more goals is priced at 14/1. I reckon he is due some goals, why not today?

The Son Says –  The last time we met Coventry at home it was his birthday party at The County Ground and we had a good look behind the scenes, followed by a decent result. 2-0 today I am told.

The Prediction – I sense a big performance today. 3-1 win with a Mason double and 1 from Ajose. Crowd will be 9’487 with 1423 from Coventry.

And Finally –  A minor planet, 3009 Coventry discovered by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh in 1973 is named after the city!

Doubt they will get in the merlin and isnt bar71 actually in the arkells ?

Can see plenty of goals in this one. Their front 2 cant stop scoring and our defence is ...

1.3 for me unless we take an early lead, also depends if we play an actual striker with Ranger rumoured to be in contention after behaving himself.

Might just creep over the 10000 attendance with 1500 cov fans. Those on the bank look lucky if BBC weather to be believed with rain holding off between 1 and 5

Good stuff...I'm concerned by Arthur Beadsworth, never heard of him.

Thought Charles Coventry might have been worth a mention as the Zimbabwean was joint holder of the highest score in a ODI up until 2010.

It used to be historically, just like Wolverhampton used to be in Staffordshire.

I hate the way we dick around with counties in this country.  Could you ever imagine the Americans moving Chicago out of Illinois?  No.  Exactly.  It's not right.

Where is it then?

I've never seen us lose a home league game to Coventry, the last time being 53 years ago, and I wasn't there, least don't remember it.  Think that will change today...having seen them on the box a couple of times, we're tailor made for them. Could be by a few too.

I would have expected that anyway.  In this rain, would you rather watch the game on the Bank getting soaked, or in the dry in a fairly sedate stand like the Arkells?  I know which I would choose.

If you drive from Kenilworth towards Coventry, you see signs that say "Welcome to Coventry" and vice versa when you drive from Coventry to Kenilworth you see signs that say "Welcome to Warwickshire". That distinction is good enough for me.

But as you live in the past anyway, I'm not surprised by your insistence.

You're easily pleased then, by the efforts of penpushers and bureaucrats...these are the same people that tried to convince us that Swindon was in fact Thamesdown, sometimes the will of the people will prevail.

Massive win, unfortunately, when your away form is dodgy it puts pressure on the home games, a loss today could have been serious.  Think it helped that Wilson was missing as he's the sort of pacy direct forward, who'd have caused us a few problems.

That was fun.  Brilliant game.  Thought it was going to be one of those days right from the off...cricket club off limits due to rain, so had to trek to the ground from Gorse Hill with two little ones in tow.  Soaking wet and not in the best of spirits.

But then a great team performance.  Clarke's goal never really looked like deciding it.  And Yaser's...what can you say?  He might as well have fired it from a Kalashnikov.

Two tired and happy little lads in the back of the car, both wanting to come back soon.  Happy days.  And Happy Christmas everyone.

I thought Coventry were pretty poor, if we didn't fuck about with it so much in the final 3rd we could have had at least 5,  I thought that cunt Clarke should have been booked for inciting the crowd, anyway superb result and a very entertaining 2nd half, roll on boxing day

I'm not going to lie, Coventry will feel unlucky not have at least a point.

But that's all the credit they get. Because we took the points and that's what counts.

Personally I thought it took their goal and Miles Storey to liven us up. From then on in we were much much better. Credit to Cooper for going for it with 2 up top when we needed to. Exactly what we should have done last week.

First half was very frustrating, getting into position to have a shot but electing not to do so. Especially on a skiddy wet pitch.

Kasim's goal - keeper didn't even move. Storey's I thought he was going to take it wide but it was a cool finish and good strength and pace to get into the shooting position.

edit: How sweet was that after Clarke thought he'd remind the Arkells of his name. Came in handy later on :)

marvellous. Happy Christmas indeed.

Obviously watching a different game to the rest of us, you will be pretty sick if you are a Cov. supporter tonight!!  We were second to nearly everything first half, they could have been 2 or three up at half-time, inevitable they were going to score, but second-half subs made a big difference.  After they scored we had a very good 15 mins but seemed to drift back into bad ways again until that magnificent volley from Kasim.  Even after that they hit the bar but Storey won it with a real striker's goal - although could have scored with an almost identical effort just before.  His pace did for them, just what we needed.  Ranger mom for me, got through an awful lot of work with no rewards.

Well we probably didn't deserve to win that but fuck it we're due one of them. I think Leon Clarke only celebrated in front of our fans in case we'd forgotten what a cunt he is! On the plus side, their gaffer will be impressed that he managed to run half the length of the pitch without stopping.

Really? I thought they were very dangerous, they hit the post and bar and looked threatening every time they went forward to me!

Very happy with a hard fought 3 points!

They looked dangerous on the break but to be fair most of their shots were from distance.I watched them v Bradford and they looked a lot better than they did today.
First half belonged to Cov though - we were 2nd best to every ball esp in midfield and they seemed to be able to get to the byline with ease.
Maybe that was the reason for Jmac going off - whatever the reason the subs made a difference
Just knew Clarke would score and yes running down the length of the arkells pointing to your name was worthy of a yellow ( taunting/incitement ) still it came back to haunt the fucker.
Thought we looked decent in attack ( Ranger makes a hell of a difference ) but we get in the box and then dick about - shoot ffs.
Kasims goal was unstoppable - boom - keeper never moved.
Thought from then on we stepped up a gear and chased/harried them all over the pitch.
Storeys goal took an age to cross the line, I thought he had fucked the chance but superb chip over the advancing keeper.

Nice to start the festive season with 3 points - cant see either Brentford or Bradford being so hospitable.
Roll on boxing day.

I thought the best team lost. Cov opened us up a number of times with Clarke missing a couple. How did he miss that header? Their passing was pretty crisp and they had good delivery, which we did not.
For the first 75, I thought we were pretty crap. A lot of players off their game and we were second to everything. The midfield was absolute bollox and the defence not much better. Byrne and J Mac were both shite. Ranger was left on his own with fuck all support.
Then they hit the post, the ball comes back into Fods arms and the rest is history. The last 15 minutes were superb. Two quality goals. Kasims was like an exocet and Storey's shows that his work down the gym is worthwhile as he looks a unit now.
Two other really positives from the day. The ref was superb - best down here this season. Then fair play to Coventry who at least played like men. None of the fucking around that Orient and Brentford give you. When they got fouled, they got back up.
I would have given Ranger MOM. The ball stuck to him like superglue.
Now the negatives. We still want to walk the ball in the fucking net. Our decision making in the box is shite - take a bow Mr Pritchard. also, our dead ball delivery is also shite - take another bow Mr Pritchard. To be honest, His workrate was good but he was shite today, as was Ajose.

Match day thread length is often inversely proportional to how well we played...and even the size of the crowd, which was OK as well.

For what it's worth, I thought Clarke just about crossed the line with his goal celebration as well.  Funny thing was he directed his performance at the Arkells Stand, which was full of kids and pensioners (and me).  Maybe he should have tried his luck with the Town End (who, incidentally, seemed to be in fine voice throughout today from where we were sitting).

Really enjoyed that second half. Coventry didn't sit on their lead, which helped is a lot. Both sides attacking and looking dangerous going forward, and generally very enjoyable. Probably wouldn't be saying the same had we lost, but fuck it. Storey took his goal well.

Good luck tryin to analyse the positions second half. At one point hall kept on overlapping bartram, Byrne was playing centre back and ajose ended the game at right back. All very odd, but I guess it worked.

Sounded very cool from Storey. Coming of age?

Storey looked a man and not a boy today. I think you may be right. Oh and Kasim was back to his player of the year best. We played well, but with a frustrating end product, Cov also played some lovely stuff.

Finally, did you know that in the last three meetings there have been six different managers.

Very even and end to end.
Predicted on radio this Morning 2-1 but would have settled with a draw.

Took both of my lads today by train and a great day out.
Fair play to the Cov fans on train going and coming back, decent.

Sounds like a good win against opposition we should perhaps not have beaten. Can't argue with that. Good to see the Iraqi Pirlo and Fairy Storey in amongst the goals, is that Miles' first game since coming back from loan? Who'd he come on for?

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Coventry City Official Matchday Thread

Coventry reminded me a lot of us. Pretty decent on the ball but when it came to finishing they were dreadful. Knew Clarke would score, and oddly enough his celebration stepped everyone up a gear and we did what we needed to kill them off.

As good as Coventry were, they shit themselves as soon as we upped the pace and ran at them and we could have notched a couple more in the end as we completely rattled them. Kasim was mostly brilliant when he came on and Ranger proved, again, how vital he is to us.

Id probably feel a little hard done by if I was a Coventry fan... but Ive lost count of how many times we've been on top then lost out because of poor finishing and shite defending, so fuck em.

Great to see Miles back on form too. They couldnt cope with him, still has the pace but he's definitely been doing some bench presses.

Most enjoyable afternoon in the end....Coventry came to play and to win - I was pleased to see Ranger was playing from the start. We need him in the side if we are to stand any chance of the paly offs - he was man of the match by a country mile and should have been given the award although if it was a large bottle of champers maybe not...he gives this side balance and his control yesterday was class. Coventry will be wondering how they didn`t win the game especially given Jay Mac`s performance - thankfully he went off - Byrne is no defender either. So relieved  that Clarke`s goal didn`t prove to be the winner.....that would have spoilt Christmas for me...so glad we let him know what a c..t he was when Storey scored.

Nice to see the crowd really get behind the team when we equalised - I reckon they stepped it up from then - Cooper doing ok so lets give him the support....

Happy bloody Christmas.... :pint:

As someone has said, nice of Leon Clarke trying to bait the pensioners/kids in the Arkells...he didn't fancy his luck trying to bait the Town End...probably shit himself he'd get punched or he couldn't run that far! Fair play to Coops for making the changes when he did, all worked out well. Ranger was my MoM...I wish that bloke would keep out of trouble as there is so much potential! Miles, welcome back...he's had a few gym sessions hasn't he?! Yasir's goal - unstoppable! Merry Xmas to everyone, looking forward to Brentford on boxing day now! C.O.Y.R!

I think there are people like that all over.

Near me we have some of my friends who try to wind up a guy three row in front over Pritchard. Not sure why they do it, but he does bite.

Then we have 'The Coach', a weary old guy in  flat cap and so called because he can see everything we do that is wrong, and usually offers advice/insightful opinion such as 'nooooo'.

We also have 'overly fair man', the one that points out that while you are baying for their centre forward to be sent off it was in fact a foul on him first. Annoying.

I myself have turned into give an opinion on everything man. I can't shut up while watching. Maybe I'll be the next Coach in a few years.

Ha ha Batch, I had to move my seat a few seasons ago because the guy sat next to me was the most miserable bastard in the world - mind you he did come from Highworth! - and everybody was lazy, nobody was fit, nobody tries and "this is the worst Swindon side I've seen in 40 years" was regularly trotted out.  He hated Painter with a venom and for a 65 years old bloke to boo at the sound of his name was a bit ridiculous I thought.  Luckily the people sat around me are much fairer, although one could easily join the Arkells "get it forward" brigade!

Hadn't seen this posted, so here's the highlights (from Coventry's YouTube channel)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrHNkMHnjOk

Miles looked brilliant for his goal, and I was a little surprised Kasim's volley went in in all honesty, didn't look like it had the power to slip past the goalie, but then again he has got pistons for legs, so it proably was...

I know the keeper was a lil unsighted but he didnt even move, I was side on to that volley and looked a lot harder than from that camera position.
Meh either way was a great equaliser

Maybe they will take note of the rather 'route one' method of Storey's goal and get away from the constant fannying around at the back when Wes has the ball.

There's something almost pure when a punt from the goalkeeper is flicked on by the big CF to his sidekick and he slots it away.

His hissy fit when Storey scored was even better.

On a side note, there was a few Cov fans behind us in the town end. One of them got really shitty with us for celebrating Storeys goal. They werent shy either, celebrated Clarke's goal and also were vocal in their defence of him when he got shit from the whole ground.

What do you mean, 'rather' route one. That was precisely route one.

Reminds me of an old Amiga game where you had to choose the tactic from each goal kick, route one being the preferred choice and nearly always came off with the big man/little man combo. Can't for the life of me remember the game though.

Route one, came about from the old TV show Quizball....the clip at the start of this is classic...I wouldn't recommend the Emlyn Hughes bit at the end...I know it's wrong to speak ill of the dead, but Molineux 1980 has taken a bit of getting over.

Hang on a minute.  He buys a ticket in the home end, the most vocal part of the ground...and then gets chopsy when the home fans celebrate a late winner?!  That's all a bit odd.

I thought the Town End were in good voice on Saturday, but it's clearly not the place it was once.  That Coventry fella would have been taken apart back in the day.

They were to the left of the exit (looking out from the stand) and it was a bit quieter that side but I was equally as surprised that no one seemed bothered by them. They weren't bad guys at all, and one of them had a kid with him.

They left not long after Storey scored as people really cottoned on that they were Coventry fans and they started getting arsey. Don't understand why you'd get annoyed at other fans celebrating a goal.

I thought the atmosphere was good after we equalised but before then I thought it was standard Swindon fare and up in the DRS all I could hear was people bickering and shouting nonsensical things. One guy kept having a go at Ranger for 'not doing him'. I can only assume he wanted Ranger to hit Leon Clarke or something.

If I remember rightly, there was a head coach at the F.A. called Charles Hughes who always maintained this was the most obvious and best way to score goals. Forget about passing the ball around, just get it forward to the "POMO" as it was called (Position Of Maximum Opportunity). Think the old Wimbledon side used it to great effectiveness!

Hughes was very influential.  Held English football back for years.  Even today, at least some of the blame for the technical inferiority of English players (vs Dutch, German etc.) can be laid at his door.  A massive wrong turn.

Howard Wilkinson signed up to this philisophy which included an optimum number of passes prior to shooting, so the idea was that this was achieved through getting the ball forward quickly as it turned out to be around 5 passes.

You'd have though that Barcleona and Spain would have done enough in recent years to show this philisophy as being utterly stupid, not least because it pays disregard for the ebb and flow of a game.  So while a goal may come from a brief move, the 65% of possession retained maye well have pulled the defensive system apart and worn down the opposition.  That as well as our abject failure on a world scale.

I had a game based on the Kick Off engine called player manager which I used to enjoy.

Basically you got to control one player who was miles better than anyone else so I used to just run about the pitch trying to get the ball off my team mates as quick as possible and try and do it all on my own!

Bet it was shit!

Taking a goal kick with the wind behind you, adding swerve and scoring a goal...or taking a goal kick and the wind taking it back over your own keepers head....a bit like Digby against Stevenage back under Muckmoan.

Kick off!  yep...  Better than Sensible soccer, there I said it..

Kick Off 2 multi player was simplistic looking, limited in options and lacking in depth. But it was the greatest 2 player game ever produced, because despite all its limitations there was no better feeling than curling a last second winning  aftertouch goal around the opposition keeper. The amount of "first to 30 wins" games we played over the years is testament to that.

The fact that this exists in 2013 says it all

       http://www.ko-gathering.com/

Sensi may have been better in 1 player mode though.

I used to play a game I cannot remember the name of on PC (you could make our own teams, change shirt colours etc, which was well advanced for the time.), but it was properly broken as all you had to do was dribble to the edge of the pitch roughly near your opponent's corner flag and shoot, and the ball would magically follow the line as if on rails and slip under the keeper.

Pretty sure it was by EA, but it definitely wasn't Sensible Soccer...  :hmmm:

Taking the ball to the by-line and shooting with the outside of the boot. Ball would always, ALWAYS curve into the far corner.

As for my contribution to the old football games turn this thread has taken - Adidas Power Soccer on the PS1.
