Title: Rotherham United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Friday, October 11, 2013, 23:07:11
The Opponent:  Rotherham United

I have to say, my last visit to Rotherham, although not overly memorable for the football, left me thinking the folk of South Yorkshire really do know how to make a good pie, the finest I have experienced at any football ground. Sadly, this ground no longer exists, but the memory of some type of really narrow alleyway still seems to live with me. I haven’t been to the new ground before, The New York Stadium? Great name, shame about the ghastly manager.  I always want to get one over on Evans, especially today as it would give us a well needed 3 points on our travels.

Apart from being a cultural desert and a borough housing over a quarter of a million whippet breeders, Rotherham is also the hometown of the strangely everlasting Chuckle Brothers, Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman, along with World Cup and Premier League referee and Howard Webb. Actors Liz White, Ryan Sampson and Darrell D'Silva also hail from Rotherham, as does current Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, William Hague. Most famously Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers, who scored three number ones, were based from Rotherham. With help of these number ones, they spent a combined eight weeks at number one and managed to knock off many songs, at the time, favourites for number one including rock legend Alice Cooper with his smash hit "Poison".

The Last Time We Met Away – On our march to League 2 glory a couple of seasons back we made our way to Rotherham and turned them over 2-1, with a Matt Ritchie double, Rotherham’s goal coming from regular thorn in the side, Alex Revell.

They have served us both –  Andy Spunkhouse, Callum Kennedy, Alex Revell, Luke Rooney, Deon Burton, Kevin Watson, Graham Coughlan

Where the opposition gather –

http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=450&fid=215&sty=2&act=1&mid=2112059014

Rotherham Last 6 – WWWDLW

The Odds –  Rotherham 6/4  Draw 12/5  Swindon 11/5 Why do I fancy a bit of 11/5, it could be costly. Kasim to open the scoring, it has to happen soon and is priced at 25/1 with Bet 365.

The Son Says –  “Can we go”?  No. In his absence he still thinks we will win 3-1.

The Prediction – This is clearly a tough one, a physical battle where our beautiful passing game is kicked in to row Z, again. 2-1 Town, goals from Massimo Luongo and Danny N’Guessan. 5’332 with 545 from the Shire

And Finally – Over the next 20 years, Rotherham is expected to receive £2 billion in investment from private industry. The town's economy, when combined with that of Sheffield, is growing faster than Leeds and Manchester!

Going for a one all on this
With their current form and our dismal away results a draw will be a decent scoreline

First visit to the NY stadium tomorrow so hoping am wrong and we come away with 3 points

Logic dictates our wanky away form must cum good some time so a 2-1 away win

Am I correct in thinking we usually do well against Jabba's sides?

They are a good side currently in 6th with only one defeat at home to Peterborough so far and only 3 home defeats in a year, we have not won away in the league since March away at Yeovil.

Cant see us getting a win but would be happy with a draw there, 6,716 crowd with 437 Swindon fans there.

Today is not a day we can lose on. I swear to god I'll put the entire squad on 'the list' if we do and hunt every single one of them down and them disgusted looks.

2-1 town.

I work with a Rotherham fan so would be good to put one over on him and Fatty Evans. Can't really see it unless we really click and stay tight at the back. Would be good to give Batch a better birthday present than England did last night.

If we don't let one in in the first 10 mins then 1-2 Town. Ranger and ImGuessing

Just about to leave, got to be better than the last trip (Don Valley), shocking place for football.  Parking in Meadowhall, 5 minutes on the train to Rotherham.  We're good enough to win today although I'm going 2-2, Pritchard & Ranger.

Nothing to suggest anything other than a home win here - don`t usually feel as negative about games but today is not a good day - 2-1 possibly 3-1.

2-1 to the home side today...

I wonder what the chances are of us going 352? Might be worth trying something different to try and do something about this away form.

Something like:

Fods

Hall
Ward
J Mac

N Thompson and Byrne as wingbacks

Kasim
Luongo
Pritch

Ranger

Presume you meant to put N'Guessan or Ajose with Ranger? Unless the FL has decided we're going to be a man down today 'because they can'?

We did put 6 on them at the CG in 1980...Andy Rowland scoring 4.  Think I'd remember us scoring 6 on the road...can only think of 2 in the league...at Cobblers in 68/69, and the famous Brum fightback.

Title: Re: Rotherham United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread

I remember the home game where handy Andy got 4 goals (all with his head I think) and we won 6-2 on a chilly Tuesday night but we do have a pretty good record away at Rovrum TBH. We have actually won 7 times in 14 away games there which isn't bad at all and we have won 4 of the last 5 games there.

All games v Rotherham gives us a 72% win ratio which is amazingly high

Just casually watching Ply v Ports and there seems to be a player for Ports called A View To A Kill

Am I going mad?

I think in the they've served us both bit, you should have mentioned Danny Williams, who history so far suggests is our best ever manager..and used to be Rotherham's longest serving player. Football fate decreed the 68/69 team secured a promotion with Roger Smart's 89th minute equaliser at Millmoor.

This brings back memories of that game.  Still an apprentice at Pressed Steel, I travelled up to Rotherham with three toolmakers, Les Morris, Tug Wilson and Sleepy Frank (any memories of them from others?). Les lived next door to Town legend John Smith, so we had  complimentary tickets. When we equalised Les threw his seat cushion up in the air and it stuck in the stanchions.  My memory tells me it was Chris Jones who scored for us, well into injury time. Happy days...

Smartie scored an equaliser when we got our first promotion in '63 home to Shrews. I think it was Chris 'Jonah' Jones up at Rotherham - think he came on as a sub. We were behind the goal, the one with the railway line right behind it, surrounded by a little gang of northern thugs, so celebrations were a bit muted.

A few days later we all let rip, that was the famous match when over 20k were at the CG for the last match of the season v Barrow.

It's our usual 4-3-3/4-5-1 isn't it? With Pritchard the AM like he was against Chelsea?

I must admit I thought Ajose looks better in a more central role with Pritchard coming in from the left, but its just versatile.

We do have a lot of players that can play in several positions.

but we've played 3 up front most of the season and Ajose has played out wide more often than not. If we were going to play 442 today why play 352 on Tuesday?

My only criticism of our recent line-ups has been Pritchard switching into Mason's vacated role... I don't like him there, he should stay out on either wing. But I guess if he doesn't play there, we lose some attacking threat by putting just a standard midfielder (Cox/Thompson) in there.

While I still believe the seasons objective of a title charge is a little too optimistic, the 'i'll just be happy to stay up' brigade should well and truly keep their mouths shut now and raise expectations a little.

Plays offs should be the minimum that is expected.

Eh, I wasn't ever expecting us to be relegated but I'd certainly have taken mid table. I'd still take 8th if offered I think, we could certainly do better if things go our way, but I'm still a little worried that we may have a bad winter (our style+shit pitches is a little worrying) and of course, Ranger's court case could derail us if it goes a certain way.

However, so far we've been brilliant and if we keep that up, I'll be delighted.

Haven't read through this thread since SR write up this morning, so apologies if I repeat things.

First 20 mins we sounded ropey, but after the first goal we kicked it up a gear sounded really good the travelling fans were great.

Coincidently last we beat Rotherham earlier in a season we went on an unbeaten run and eventually won League 2.

I was not expecting that result I expected it to be a scrappy 1-0 win/loss. 4-0 will do it for me. Very impressed with the goals saw them on SSN.

We'll be up there at the end of the season. Onwards and upwards.

Loving the love we're getting from opposing fans. Can't remember the last time we got this sort of respect.

Most of their fans seem to be blaming the ref. Jeez, how many times at home have we had a cock for a referee in the league since February and still manage to remain undefeated. Great win and when your 1-0 down at home you can still come back as we have proved twice in our last two home league games.
Class today.

Edit: Just had a look at the BBC stats and apparently Rotherham didn't have a shot on target all game. Did Wes not have to make any saves then.

Just back. Haven't read through the thread but here goes...

We started poorly. Very poorly. It took me and KT about 20 minutes to work out we were playing 3-5-2, and it seemed to take the players even longer. Thompson was constantly unaided defensively on the right, and Rotherham had numerous chances to score. One they skewed wide, another was hit straight at Foderingham (who did well to save on to the bar) and then, when they broke through 4 on 2 their midfielder inexplicably struck a shot from 25 yards, high into the town fans.

However, we grew into the game. Byrne started to find space on the left, Luongo made the odd foray forward and Pritchard was being given the occasional opportunity to run through the centre. It was from one such run that the first goal came. Having beaten two out of the three defenders around him he was chopped down. Yellow card, no question. Up he got, and curled one over the wall and into the top corner. Minutes later there was nearly a repeat. Pritchard ran forward, and was either going to shoot or get taken down. He was tripped, it was always going to be a yellow. For some reason the home fans took exception to this, much like they took exception to Nardiello being constantly flagged offside, when he was in fact, quite clearly only a yard or two off. Shocking from the officials.

Pritchard blasted the free kick over and that looked like it for the first half - a deserved goal but perhaps an ill deserved lead. But then , out of nowhere, Luongo finds a yard of space in from the left wing, and hits a peach of a shot, deflecting it perfectly off the covering defender to send it over the keeper and into the far corner. You can't teach that.

So, half time and 2-0 up. I was far from confident, although my jokey pre-match prediction of another Swindon 3-0 Evans score line wasn't looking far wrong. We'd have to defend well though, and ride out some pressure. Rotherham wouldn't roll over. In fact they came out in the second half with such vengeance that they managed an incredible zero attempts at goal for the whole 45 minutes. In truth they fell to pieces. Swindon started finding space, making runs and creating chances, pass after pass finding feet and long cross field balls being placed on a sixpence for their recipients. One move saw 20+ passed from Town, accompanied by olés from the away end, and culminating in a neat back heel from Ranger to split the defence and send Pritchard through. He didn't miss by much.

However, further goals did arrive. First the home side were torn apart by a move that saw Ajose slot home into an empty net from all of one yard out, then in the dying moments N'Guessan latched on to a loose ball after the centre back failed to evade a challenge, slotting calmly past the keeper and signalling to the Town fans that they'd got the four they'd been asking for.

The home end began to empty after the third. Apparently they'd been robbed by a disgraceful display from the officials. It would seem they were watching a different game. Having managed one shot on target all game, and having spent the final 20 minutes playing long balls so far from their intended targets that the away end burst into renditions of "try to keep it on the pitch", it was clear why Swindon had won. Rotherham didn't take their early chances, Swindon grew into the match and eventually took control. A local journalist suggested that Rotherham had been taught a footballing lesson. He wasn't wrong.

One pie for the fat one in the pink tie please mate. Chins up Steve, at least this year's manager knows who you are.

You can't see your cock, you can't see your cock, you fat bastard you can't see your cock."

Now I enjoyed that today.
First 25 mins all over the place and reminded me of Shef Utd away last season but we weathered the storm and started to play. Kassim what can I say, unbelievable.
2-0 up at HT flattered us but second half the confidence and counter-attacking was fantastic. More direct but still with the passing.
Rotherham fans were complimentary of our football.

Loved the "olay" and the dogs abuse that fat bastard got.

So wet feet, smiles and a happy journey home for once. Been a while.

Even got to see my eldest lad hit a hat-trick this morning.
So a good day all round. Pity the scum won but a great day.

Looking forward to Friday now.
Well done you fellow Town fans who made the trip. Credit to the Club.

Is this the first time in the 10-odd games since he left us that Alex Revell didn't score against us?  No longer our bogey player!  (Happily, we still appear to be Fatty Evans' bogey team.)

Well, well, well, what an absolutely fantastic result.  I went off into town shopping and decided to avoid checking my phone for score updates, so was completely unaware until I got back to the car at 5.45pm.  Both games we have won away this season (QPR as well) I had no idea of the score until after the game.  Clearly I need to steer clear of radio and tv during all away games this season  :)

Always good to get one over on fatty Evans again as well.

Promotion last year as well. They have thrown a bit of money at it. Pre Fitton we never got close to 8,000 either really.

Rather amusing seeing some of their fans react to the defeat on twitter today. Always nice to get one over on Evans as well. Great results which puts us close to the play-offs and we're almost at the 1/4 way stage. 2 home games coming up to keep trying to push on.

After the first 25 thought we were going to get hammered
How they didnt score is a mystery - defensively we were awful and they skipped thru us with ease
Still if you dont take your chances  :smugfu:

Superb free kick from Pritchard ( my MoM ) set the ball rolling for a long overdue trouncing of someone away and nice it was the fat controllers lot.
Being down the other end to the free kick am not sure if deffo was a foul or rovrum fans just bleating
Mattered not as sailed into the net.

Only one team in it 2nd half and they rarely had a sniff
Town attacked with pace today and that made a difference.
Nice little stadium, nice pies, nice stewards shit fans and of course the bell end evans

Damp cold but deffo worth the schlep up north
Roll on friday now

Rotherham averaged 3,583 at home in League 2 in 2008/09.  They seem to have more than doubled their fanbase in the space of 5 years...which surprised me.  That's all I was saying.

All things being equal, we'd expect to up our fanbase if we got to the championship to one level and kick on from there if we became moderately sucessful to boot. Also a plus or minus for them is the proximity of four other clubs, a shit ground situation turned around.

Really shoddy of the BBC not to produce an edition of the Football League Show just because there were no Championship matches.  The grassroots of football in this country run a lot deeper than the top two divisions.  They should know that.

Miserable day weather wise, but encouraging that it didn't affect our style, some of the best football I've seen us play away from home for some time.

And if Revell's volley had been a bit sweeter
He had a few options

Abusing Evans for being a corrupt cheat and a man with the temperament of a small child is fair enough but to single him out solely because he is overweight is unfair, unnecessary and discriminatory.

So I take it you are a fatty then

We'd have been in more trouble had Pringle been more crisp in his finishing early doors.

Reminds me of "banter" with some Leicester Fans in Covent Garden before the play off final a few years back.

"You can stick your cheese & onion up your arse..."

(for the younger readers, they played in blue, with Walkers on the front)

This is exactly the type of discrimination that I'm talking about. Is it any wonder that society is failing?

Drove up and arrived in time to hunto down some Parking cake and a decent pork pie in the market in the town, then off the the ground which, for a new build, was not as 'flatpack' and samey as many.

A cracking game that, for the first 20 minutes looked like it was going to be a bit of a disaster. This seems to be a bit of of a theme for us, taking 15-20 minutes to get a handle on the game but, once we did get a grip, it was all about us.

Once again, nobody had a bad game. Jay mac maintained the improvement he showed last game. Wes did bloody brilliant at one point in the first half when he kept out a close range effort (deflection) close in to his left post. Nathan and Nathan ran the channels well. Pritch did the usual- sublime excelence with the odd moment of exasperation. Luongo was fairly solid in the middle as was Kas (though he had trouble staying on his feet- needed longer studs?). Hall and Ward were pretty solid. PowersRanger held the ball up well despite getting gripped up left right and centre. Ajose ran hard and took his goal very well.

Cooper looked well pleased when he came over with the team to take and give applause. I don't know what went on post final whistle but I saw him being 'escorted' from the tunnel by one of his staff and I think that made the plaudits all the more enjoyable for him.

The travelling support did us proud.

All topped off by a nice Italian meal and bottle of vino collapso in Rotheram post match courtesy of SWMBO employer :I'm a complete mofleakin Deak

So who does know what happened? Was there a fracas?

Or the scorer of the second goal.

They managed to write "another Spurs loanee" in front of both Spurs loanees, after already citing an over-exaggerated number of Spurs loanees. Shame they suggested that Spurs-loanee Kasim scored the second rather than Spurs-loanee Luongo, pretty rookie error really when a quick look at any online results Spurs-loanee facility will Suprs-loanee tell you the Spurs-loanee who scored.

Deserved winners though.

Well, perhaps the mods could start a sticky topic for 'Post Of The Day' or similar, where a particularly stunning post (for whatever reason it's stunningness manifests) is quoted within for all to enjoy.

Not knocking it, but it was only out of 20 odd games to chose from.
