Title: Impresive. Post by: leefer on Saturday, August 24, 2013, 21:57:52 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Baker
As a young boy i vaguely remember seeing this mans photo splashed all over the footie annuals etc. What a scoring record! yet i reckon most today wouldn't have heard of him....i only remembered after seeing that his brother passed away today RIP....not a bad player either. Joe Baker and Bro....real good couple of footballing brothers i reckon. Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: Reg Smeeton on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 00:46:56 Got capped for England, while playing in Scotland...an anomaly, which I never thought I'd see again until, Trevor Steven, Mark Hateley and Gazza inexplicably pitched up north of the border.
Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: Family at War on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 08:05:01 I saw Joe Baker play on a couple of occasions Leefer and he was one hell of a Centre Forward. The type we do not see in the game now - Ray Crawford, Ron Davies, Wyn Davies, Tony Hateley, and one of my Swindon favourites Pat Terry
Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: Family at War on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 08:10:03 Strange fact as well is that his brother Gerry who played for Coventry in the sixties was a USA international
Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: Amir on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 08:40:27 'In his first season with Hibs, the 17-year-old Baker scored all four goals in Hibs' 4–3 victory over city rivals Hearts in the quarter-final of the 1958 Scottish Cup.'
That's the sort of thing I used to daydream about doing as a young lad. Hell of a record, seems unlucky on the face of it not to have made the '66 World Cup squad with stats like that at Arsenal. Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: DV on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 11:44:34 Fantastic, another set of brothers capped by different international teams.
Someone asked me this at work a while back. Think I got 4 Anyone got any? Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: Family at War on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 12:05:24 Got a feeling John Hollins played for England while his brother Dave had a cap for Wales
Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: DV on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 12:50:09 Awesome.
That's Baker and Hollins mentioned in this thread plus the Tim and Chris Cahill, Jerome and Kevin Prince Boateng....I'm sure I had another two, must be a few more... Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: DV on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 12:54:26 Roy and Steve Wegerle

Unless I've missed something thats Jerome (Germany) and Kevin Prince (Ghana) Title: Re: Impresive. Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: Berniman on Sunday, August 25, 2013, 23:42:32 Didn't George Weah has a relation that played 20 mins for Southampton after duping Souness into signing him by DVD?

Ali Dia.....wasn't actually a relation...he got in touch with Graeme Souness and acted as Weah, he stated he was an International footballer and that he was a relation to George Weah....on that, Souness signed him before seeing him play! Christopher Wreh, was allegedly a cousin of George Weah, certainly the only Double winner, to be turning out for Bishop Stortford Town, within 5 years....I suspect George might have had an extensive family. Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: RedRag on Monday, August 26, 2013, 04:29:18 Joe Baker was one of the leading strikers in the old first division in the 60s playing for Arsenal and Forest and enjoyed a career highlight v the Town.
In 1966-67 he was new at Forest and helped them to a runners up spot against the Man Utd which went on to win the European Cup the following season. That season, Swindon had despatched the Hammers of Hurst, Moore and Peters in the FA Cup and then forced a second replay against Joe Baker's Forest. It was third time lucky for Joe as he scored in the third game when Town were eventually despatched in front of 50,000 at Villa Park Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: DV on Monday, August 26, 2013, 09:52:51 Missed that in your post. It was either that or there are more Boatengs out there, which is highly likely. Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: leefer on Monday, August 26, 2013, 19:18:55 How did it pan out after Reg,can you remember....did Forest get much further...was we unlucky that match or outplayed?
Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: RedRag on Monday, August 26, 2013, 21:39:33 We drew 0-0 at Forest and I think that was the match the Don missed a one on one (which in his case, unlike Andy Williams, was memorable), then we drew with a late equaliser at the County Ground before being dicked 3-0 in the 2nd replay. Forest went out in the SFs. Listened to the first match on the radio - pre internet and good reception!
Title: Re: Impresive. Post by: Reg Smeeton on Monday, August 26, 2013, 22:06:40 How did it pan out after Reg,can you remember....did Forest get much further...was we unlucky that match or outplayed? As far as I recall we were beaten fair and square...Forest had a decent side, the likes of Ian Storey-Moore, John Barnwell and Frank Wignall. They beat Everton in the 6th round, before losing to Spurs in the semi, who went on to win it...Frank Saul anyone. Forest were runners up that year, so we were doing well to take them to a third game. |
