Several people been promised statements clarifying his position, etc. from Jed on twitter several times now, Thursday seems to be the latest date quoted....see no reason why this one will be met.

Not quite sure what people are expecting from this tbh. It will just say "Lee Power's a lovely fella who's done loads of good things for the club and knows lots of people in football dontcha know. And all that embarrassing stuff about programmes was ages ago. And that Cambridge/Rushden/wherever else it was stuff too. And he wasn't even in the country for most of it. Or awake. Or anything."

And if he is a genuinely all right bloke who's going to do a cracking job for the club, having a statement saying so won't make anyone believe it any more than not. And if he's a MegaMind style evil genius intent on bringing the club to rack and ruin while he strokes a white cat next to his ornamental pool of pirahnas (complete with deluxe retractable bridge), the statement's probably not going to mention that. Much like the Adver's "At home with Mike" Diamandis glossy of a few years back didn't focus too much on the whole "couldn't trust as far as you could throw him" aspects.

We'll be none the wiser either way. As arriba said the other day, judge him/them on what they do, not what they say. (Unless they say something hideously stupid of course :) )

Title: Re: STATEMENT THURSDAY .....
Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, August 8, 2013, 11:11:02
Didn't expect it, but here it is:

Quote
I’m delighted to be officially joining The Board of Swindon Town Football Club.

I don’t think it’s any secret that I have been working in the background for the past few months and am pleased that I can finally talk in an official capacity. I am very excited about helping the club with the challenge of continuing to be successful on the pitch and also assisting in achieving financial sustainability. We (The Board) are extremely confident of achieving this but to ease all supporters' concerns, until this has been achieved, we (The Board) will continue to finance any shortfall.

We knew this was the case in the short term and we are prepared to do so going forward until the club is where it needs to be financially. We also have to be aware of the new FFP rules which we would have exceeded considerably if we hadn’t taken the steps we had over the summer. From my personal point of view I feel I can add a lot to the club with my extensive business and football experience.

As you are aware there has been a significant turnover of players and there will continue to be so until the budget is reduced to where it needs to be. The club has achieved success over the past couple of seasons signing experienced professionals on substantial contracts. That strategy needed to change and we have to now do things in a different way but we still expect to be successful with a younger group of players mixed in with some good senior professionals. We also plan to produce an attractive and exciting style of play that Swindon has been famous for in the past.

We are excited by the players we have recruited and using the loan market to get good quality players in who fit in with the style that we play and also fit in with the wage constraints was always part of our plan. We feel that we have managed to get four loan players of real quality from Tottenham, and hopefully having them all from the same the club will make the bedding-in process a lot quicker and easier. I think a lot of people within the game consider, at that age, Spurs to have one of the strongest groups in the country.

We are actively looking for a manager at the moment but that does not mean we will not continue to be active in the transfer market. Obviously it is not an ideal situation but with the season now upon us we have to continue to move on targets that have been identified whilst still moving some players out. We have a blueprint and philosophy in place that we want to instill and we are looking for a manager and players that fit into that. I am in constant contact with Mark Cooper who has done an excellent job and will be treated as manager until we are in a position to announce a permanent manager.

I would like to reiterate my excitement at being part of this fantastic club and I would ask for a bit of patience as we work through this transitional period. I am sure if we are afforded that and you continue with your fantastic support of the club, we will give you a side to be proud of and that you look forward to coming to watch.

#COYR

Positive clarification of what they are trying to do. Could/should have had more to do with Power's role at the club and what it actually entails but other than that the other other grumble is how long it's taken.

Pretty united front with Jed's statement. Would be nice to see a bit more detail on how actively he is involved in player recruitment (I suspect the answer is completely and solely) but give him a chance. We can't have two Mikey D's in a decade, the world is better than that.

That's a pretty good statement on the club's direction but ducks the question of what his actual role is which is concerning.

However, as said previously, Actions > Words.

Title: Re: STATEMENT THURSDAY .....
Post by: chalkies_shorts on Thursday, August 8, 2013, 11:30:54
Its a decent statement but doesn't really inform us. Its good thuogh that they said there'd be a statement and that he has come, albeit slightly, out of the shadows.
I would keep Cooper on for another couple of weeks and see how it goes and I wish we'd be honest and use the word coach not manager.
This bit was interesting "with a younger group of players mixed in with some good senior professionals" - thats not really gonig to help offloading those out of favour.
As pauld says lets look at the actions not the word and this is where, in my opinion, it falls down with Ged and co.

Oh, OK, I see what you were driving at now then. No, I was saying it's fine as far as it goes (and it's pretty good in that regard tbf), but it was all about the club/board's footballing philosophy, not about Power himself and what his role is. Which is what people had been asking for clarity on. So it was a little concerning that the statement rather blatantly ducked that.

This. Another little PR release that once again says very little really. Tbh us ordinary fans are never going to be told real details until it has already happened, and I would say that has always been the case with any football club.

Something is better than nothing, certainly.  But what Jed (and Lee Power) need to understand is that this club has previous - and fairly recent - experience of having been run by a shady character operating in the background.  And it didn't go very well.  Anything that looks or smells like another Diamandis situation is going to get a lot of people offside.  And as a result, transparency is a lot higher up the agenda than it probably used to be.

I don't want to denigrate everything that Lee Power is doing, because there are signs that some of what is being done might just work.  (Or fail horribly.  But that's not really the point.)  But given the absence of a manager at the moment, and that Lee Power appears to be doing a lot of the things that you might reasonably expect a manager to do (incl player selection and signing etc.), I think we're going to need to see & hear a little more about what he's up to than we have up until now.

Hilarious timing of Lee Power's statement, with last real asset, Wes, about to be given to Brentford for £450k. Can't wait for Jed's spin on this one after promising he wouldn't be sold. And the two of them are already in talks to sell the club on, trying to blag a ridiculous sum. And still people will believe the bullsh*t. This. We have all learnt a lot recently about the state of the club and how Wray/PDC spunked Black's money up the wall. Yes they seem a little bit "wide" and yes we are scarred by Diamond Mike but as Barry said they deserve a chance.

Aye, I think the current duo deserve a bit of time and credit.

They need to work on the communication and I get the impression its just not Jed or Lee's bag.  They perhaps need a Nick Watkins or Flasher Mac chief exec that can deal with the local press and provide a bit more information than is currently coming from the club.

As of a couple of weeks ago, just before I went on holiday, Fredi was still insisting that Jed had sold the club to Power, presumably in the hope that if (s)he said it often enough people it would become true and his/her repeated prediction that the club was on the verge of being sold would somehow magically not turn out to have been the complete crock that it so obviously was.

Quite why (s)he thinks the board would repeatedly lie about the shareholding in the holding company and the club I don't know. How he thinks Jed was intending to keep it all secret is also a bit unclear, as it's a bit too easy to get hold of company director appointment and shareholding transaction documents on line now to hush that kind of thing up.

All in all I'm concluding that Fredi = sadcase stirrer and / or nutter. If it turns out the Bilderberg group are involved in some way then we can probably safely go with the latter.

I find it ironic that had Black/Wray/Di Canio been still here and announced all the signings and improvements the new board have made then most of the moaners about the new board would have been creaming their pants at the prospects of the season ahead - I'm in now way a happy clapper but feel a lot more comfortable about the sustainability of the club than before when the house of cards collapsed because the sugar daddy stopped the cash flow...

I've only been referring to her as female because at heart I'm a smug, childish prick.

I believe this to be the case, yes. I also believe that the club know exactly who Fredi is too.

I don't think Fredi is one person, going on by what a lot of people seem to be saying.

Bidding and buying are 2 different things, though

Thanks for that clarity Mr Holmes!! :sherlock:

Agreed, but we wouldn't bid if we didn't have anything to spend. Unless the board know he's valued at say half a mill and Bournemouth will 100% tell us to gtf.
