Title: Swindon vs Birmingham City
Post by: singingiiiffy on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, 14:59:50
Still can't believe we are playing the next day, I said to myself that if this is anything more than a tenner I wouldn't go but since looking at the prices I don't know if I can be bothered still. Can't seem more than 4k for this one. Attendance thoughts and line ups? Guessing bedwell , l Rooney, Collins, benson, Navarro, mceverely will all start

I'd be surprised if there's more than 2k there.

I too cant see more than 2,500 there TBH and Brum are playing a fair few trialists if thier other pre season friendlies at Alfreton (3-1 win for Brum) and Shamrock Rovers (4-0 win for Brum) are anything to go by.

I am going for a 3-0 defeat.

I'll go for Swindon 1 (Benson) Birmingham 2.

Preview from Brum City OS.

Quote
pre-season fixture against League one side Swindon Town at the County Ground (7.45pm kick-off).
Blues boss Lee Clark thoughts on managerless Swindon Town and on them playing Spurs just 24 hours previously.
"Playing against a managerless side in pre-season is quite a strange one for us. But whoever is in charge, their players will be out to impress so that they start in the first game of the season.

"The fact that they also had a game against Spurs last night and might change their side around is unimportan to us."

Clark on what he wants his players to gain from the fixture.
"What’s important to me, is my players getting what we want out of this game and the three following it. It is about us getting things bedded down tactically and players putting a marker down with regards to the coming season.

"They’ve done the fitness part of pre-season and we're now looking at the personnel and our systems.

"We have one or two little injuries and niggles etc, but that will stand us in good stead this season because we will have to put up with injuries, suspensions etc and learn to deal with it. So it’s about the players getting in the right mentality and doing the right things."

Team news:
Clark has confirmed that Jonathan Spector will have surgery on his broken cheekbone today and be out for six weeks. Will Packwood (broken leg) and David Murphy (knee) are making good progress but are still several weeks away from a return to training.

Darren Ambrose (groin) is sidelined for a week and Nikola Zigic has a slight back strain which sees him miss out this evening. Tom Adeyemi (hamstring) and Matt Green (concussion) are doubts, but if they don't travel they should be available for Saturday's fixture against Oxford United.

Last thing we need is more strikers. We've already got them playing in midfield due to lack of numbers elsewhere.

Agombar on for Ward, James Collins now playing centre back alongside Nathan Thompson.

I think we need another CB or two as with Oakley injured it's literally Hall and Ward and then

Collins has played midfield then centre back. Think he'll be off.

Me too. Especially as he was offered (apparently) a new, increased contract, worth £2.8k pw. If that's true, that's insulting when Rooney was offered £8k. Seems we took him for granted and leaving was a fuck you. Far too good for League 2.

Cooper:
- Long night
- Energy had gone from last night
- Just wanted to get through without injury
- Alex Smith dehydration and wasnt well
- Players ran about and gave what they had
- Goals. When you get tired you make silly mistakes
- Collins did a job for us
- Agombar back from injury
- Protect people and lack on numbers meant Benson and Rooney played
- Tijane. Training but awaiting paperwork. Process we cant speed up
- Rooney. Not been told anything about it
- Caddis. Doesnt know anything.
- Kasim looked alright on the ball. Worth another look. Will take stock tomorrow to see if he goes to Portugal
- Cooper to lead team to Portugal
- Not heard anything about manager
- Performance last night should give fans positivity. Club needs a period of stability. Sure that will come soon
- Cooper and Academy keeper coach, physio and sports scientist. Only members of coaching team going to Portugal.

Collins is not a CB.... waldon looked ok but didnt link very well...pritchard hardly git a look in...but flashes were there...jay mce was solid...williams not at ease on his own...louis t looked a bit lost...aAGOMBAR...yes he exists and looked wirth anither chance...jackson...no idea. Hall
- Bit tired
- Strange playing against parent club last night
- Battled well last night
- Tonight Brum were more direct
- Everyone tired tonight
- Team gelling. Hopefully bond in Portugal.
- Enjoying playing with Ward
- All know how each other want to play from Spurs
- Knew Yassir Kasim from Brighton. He's really good on the ball.

Had we took up the option on Ferry he was due a large wage rise we simply could not afford, that is the facts, plain and simple.  Whilst it was a financial decision it must be remembered that KMac didn't fancy him too much in centre midfield!!

Did we not have the best defence in the division at one point with those two at centre back last season?

Game was alright.

Birmingham were the better team for 80 minutes, we had a good 10 after the break and their keeper made 2 good saves. Looked a bit leggy later on and finished the game with Collins and Thompson (n) centre back.

Hall looks fairly composed on the ball. I'd take Devera over him given a straight choice mind just because you know what you are getting with Devera. But its  a pointless argument isn't it.

Pritchard looks good but we didn't get him into the game as much as yesterday.

Can't judge anything from preseason, the negatives today were we got unlocked a few too many times for my liking with the ball over the top, and I still don't like 1 up front but since its only a friendly I give not a shit.

Who was the guy who started in the middle with Luke Rooney. Actually Luke Rooney looked lively himself.
----------
What's this about playing a Spurs dev team on this pointless trip to Portugal? Is this a wind up?

Beginning to think the only question left to ask of our relationship with Spurs is spits or swallows?

Depends if we enjoy it or not.

Whats the point in Cooper leading the team in Portugal unless he is getting the job of course.

I suspect we'll have our man by then or when we get out there and low and behold, Sam et al won't be there to interview the new man.

I can't see how having the media the would possibly be obstructive, but I fail to fathom much of what goes on in the minds of our board...

So, from tonight we have learned:

1. Town are likely to be playing against a Spurs Dev side in Portugal.
2. Hardly any Swindon coaching staff are going to be there.
3. Neither the Adver nor any other media are being allowed to the camp.

To me that sounds as if the Swindon team will be coached alongside the Spurs team. (I also read somewhere about 1/2 Portuguese players that Spurs were looking at). Maybe Swindon are acting as a sparring partner for Spurs and an opportunity for Spurs to gauge the strength of their next gen squad and potential signings?

1. We have another triallist who looks accomplished in midfield
2. Agombar was injured but is part of the team.
3. Collins is being used everywhere except his actual position

I can't see why you'd think that...back to back friendlies in searing heat is the kind of thing that Sepp Blatter might come up with...and he heads world football.

Or looked at another way, all our coaching staff will be there! It's just that we have hardly any.

In fairness Reg I don't think you can blame the board for the heat!

True....I'm sure if we'd had a manager he'd have found it a useful exercise...(as long as he knew nothing of sport's science)

No, you're right he wouldn't, it was obviously a fuck-up having our two "main" friendlies on consecutive days but obviously came about because the Brum one was booked when they got the chance to play Spurs. Spurs presumably offered us a "take it or leave it" date and Brum held us to the contract date, I assume because they had other stuff in their schedule. I don't imagine it was a very useful exercise for their gaffer either, playing against a team of knackered players from a league below.

What was the gate in the end btw? Did we get more than 2000?

Cooper says that Fraser has some commitments in the UK that mean he can't go. (No uncharitable comments here please)

Does that mean Digby is not full time with the club? Is he still selling kits to all the local teams?

it's obvious we need another experience central defender and midfielder, also a decent striker.

If Darren Ward leaves or gets injured then were seriously fucked.

We really new some more signings, as my confidence in are currently squad is low.

Ill be honest, I want to think positive, but it's the harder than any season I faced.

I certainly agree with the first 2 comments, we do need an experienced backbone and a decent striker as it appears Collins & Benson are leaving and Williams with all the will in the world is not a great striker (yes he has some good moments but a lot of bad also).

This season still does not match a few for me in foreboding as I had in the 2005-6 season with Iffy in charge, 1999-2000 with Todd, 1998-9 with Quinn and nowhere near as bad a feeling as I had in 1983-4 with the awful Beamish in charge of us.

All those season I was a lot more worried about the team/club/quality of players we had.

I still won't pass judgement on the state of the team until we have a manager in place and a final squad for the season.

Whats the latest on Simon Ferry?

Seems strange he hasn't been picked up yet by another club.  Can't quite fathom why he was let go other than his wages being an issue.

Portsmouth are going about their business slowly and quietly and have put together a very good squad for that league. If they get Ferry aswell they should walk it.. Should..

10,000 season tickets sold as well. Can see them winning that league, surely they are favourites?

But we should have signs him to a contract that we couldn't afford because there were a host of Championship clubs lining up to pay a transfer fee for him.

Personally I hope he gets sorted with a club, because he is good enough to be playing in most teams in L1 let alone L2.

Ferry is probably caught inbetween two stools right now.  Good enough for this level - absolutely, but are any clubs going to offer him the sort of money he thinks he probably deserves after being on Celtic's books as a youth and then probably earning a decent wedge here.

Phil Smith, granted a lot lower level of player, struggled last pre season to find a club because the offers he received were too low to afford to move home.
