Cheers Sade. I went for a 2-1 Town win in Whits prediction league.

At least I can listen to the build up on RS over the net. Just hope they forget turn it off at 7.45!

Nicholas and Roberts in the team.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 18:09:19
Evans
Nicholas
Ifil
O'Hanlon
Collins
Smith
Pook
Whalley
Roberts
Cureton
Thorpe.

Subs

Reeves
Shakes
Bulman
Nichalou
Wells.

It'll be interesting to see if Roberts plays on the right, or if he plays behind Cureton and Thorpe, or there could be 3 up front.

What do you think the year is on the competition

I'm going for 1973.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Sade on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 18:13:42
Thats what I think it must be.My dad calls him Nicky Nicalay :| I think roberts, thorpe and cureton up front would be very interesting.

I'd like to see 3 up front, or if he plays just behind them. I hope he doesn't stick him on the right wing.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Sussex on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 18:17:34
Quite surprised Shakes is on the bench. Thought he did well at Barnsley.

Nicholas gets a start - that hasn't happened for a while

Not sure where Roberts will fit in (happily) unless it's three up front...

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 18:19:40
I'm pleased Nicholas is getting a game. I just hope he makes the most of it, after his first season I was really dissapointed with how his career went last year.

I know his alleged drinking etc gets well documented on here, I just hope he realises he's a decent player and doesn't waste his career.

We'll keep you up to date if you lose RS Sussex, don't worry.

They're right about leaders on the pitch as well, we need someone out there to shout a bit, organize, give praise, build up players etc.

Will be interesting to hear the half time reaction from the crowd.

The players do sound really nervous.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Dazzza on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 19:28:57
Long ball again, not a chance against that Oldham defence.

I thought King was going to make use of the width and try and play the ball on the ground against Oldham.  Odd that he has left both of his wingers out.

Bottom of the table at half time.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Sussex on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 19:29:10
Jesus fucking wept. Such a promising start too.

My Mac died and by the time I'd sorted it we've conceded another

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Sade on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 19:30:11
half time-full of boo's.They had better get their arses together in the second half.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 19:31:14
There's no point doing the long ball if you'e not going to put your tall players up front for free kicks etc. Play it on the floor.

So 4 goals conceded, no goals scored, and as Dazzza said bottom at half time.

Come on Andy, sort this out at half time.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Sippo on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 19:38:14
Probably not...If King blames his players for playing the long ball game and says that its not his fault, why on earth does he sit in the stands and do nothing? How the hell are you supposed to give your players instructions in the stand? Argh!!

Hopefully so and take a gamble on Roberts in the middle for Pook.

Can't see any other real options.

If we switch to three at the back with wing backs again I'll cry.

It gives me a bit more hope for Saturday and the season. We've shown what we can do in the last 15 minutes of the match.

BUT, we've got to do that from the start, we can't give teams starts like we gave Oldham. Pass the ball, it proves how well that works.

Well done Christian Roberts, sounded like he played well, best player of the night.

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Dazzza on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 20:40:23
Strange starting formation, have to agree with James on the radio there after all of the talk of width and playing it on the ground after Barnsley not starting with wingers.

Quite like to hear a full match report from the troops.

Wonder if Smith is a prospect in the middle?

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Papa Smurf on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 20:41:43
Problem is, this isn't a new problem, all last year it was the same, we never play well for more than 45 mins, wheter it be in the 1st or 2nd half we can't sustain it for a whole match! It does make me wonder if it is something to do with King, clearly we can do it, but the coaching team aren't getting it out of the players

Title: Match day thread.......
Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, 20:43:29
I think King's got a part to play, but so have the players. They're grown men, and should be able to have pride and get out there and put in performances for 90 minutes. And at least make an effort the whole match, don't care if they make mistakes as long as they try their hardest.

Title: Match day thread.......

Defeat against Forest and we're bottom (if we aren't already!!)

Why oh why oh fucking why did we leave it that late *smashes head hard on wall*

Nicholas and Roberts were pretty dismal today, though Roberts did step up and his goal was taken really well. We are desperately lacking that midfield player though. Whalley was pretty poor today but he shows signs of being a decent player.

I think our team still needs to gel, I liked the look of Shakes & Nicolau and that Smith fella works his arse off.

That's why you need to be there to see what's going on, as the radio seemed to say that Roberts was the best player, that's how I heard it anyway.

I know you were there, or I guessed you were from your comments.

I was trying to say that by way of your comments about Roberts, as if you'd heard it on the radio he seemed the best player by a long way.

That's why it's good to hear from people like you who have seen it and can give a better view of things.

A promising start, mostly passing well, but defence kept giving it away instead of using it and their midfield got right on top. Ifil, O'Hanlon, Nicholas worst offenders.
Whalley did very little except short passes, not very accurate or piercing.
Pook worked and challenged hard. Collins had a good hard game IMO.
Ifil was awful IMO, and O'Hanlon lacked composure.
Roberts wasted several opprtunities early on, but sharpened up later.
We missed having a winger IMO as Roberts roamed everywhere.
The midgets hardly won a long ball, as expected.
The whole team seemed lethargic and slow until near the end.

These are only first impressions, and the strong sun made it hard to follow play first half.

Oh right, sorry mate!

To be fair Roberts was a lot better towards the end, he made some decent runs and took players on, his goal was taken superbly aswell.

Start Shakes and Nicolau against Forest.

Whalley was described as rather lazy on the wireless, jogging rather than running a lot of the time.

Jerel sounded terrible, was he really that bad?

Just got home, Roberts did make a lot of errors, but particularly in the 1st half he was about the only Swindon player that seemed to want the ball, and that really wanted to win the game. Whalley looked ok when he got into the game, but left it way too late.

Nicolau was a bright spot, when he came on Swindon really looked like they had an outlet down the left hand side, a good pass for Roberts goal, knew when to play it square to Whalley and brought Whalley into the game. He should start on Saturday.

Up front Cureton and Thorpe didn't stand a chance when the ball was being continually pumped long. Good finish by Thorpe for the goal.

At the back I have a question... Collins - Why? he was terrible, technically and positionally. At fault for the 1st goal IMHO Lapham must be better than him.

Oldham may go on to do a Luton this season but I doubt it, if the team play like they did for the first 75 mins on Saturday Forest are gonna really spank us!

What did you make of Smith Barnard?? I thought he worked pretty hard.

I do think we'll improve for Saturday, hopefully Nicolau starts.

Didn't do much wrong, got around the pitch without being outstanding, I'd like to see him at right back, with Nicholas taking the left, and Nicolau playing wide left.

Pat Collins is terrible....what? who? why? just crap.

Roberts looked eager, stood out really, at least he tried for 90 minutes!

thorpe and cureton didn't link up at all. im thinking fallon for thorpe on saturday.

Dissent I think. Not sure though. I'd go Fallon and Thorpe on Saturday.

Roberts was our best player in my opinion. At least he worked ahrd, if sometimes lacking in quality.

-Whalley just isnt fit after 45 mins pre-season
-Collins looks shite
- Ifill IS shite. I've never seen a pro with such terrible distribution and concentration
I'd be really happy if we sold him tomorrow and got someone steady and dependable  a bit like a certain northen lad playing at the back for city perhaps?
- Thorpe & cureton cant play together - both need to play alongside a targetman
- Jack Smith isnt any good on the left wing
- Nicholas has seemingly forgotten how to play football.

My thoughts from the match in no particular order:

Rhys: Seems to have improved his kicking significantly, only hoofed it out once. Wasn't at fault for any of the goals as far as I'm concerned, maybe could have made his intended direction a little less obvious for the penalty. Didn't have a hope for the free-kick, it was just too good.

O'hanlon: Was getting some unjustified stick from people around me, won everything in the air and fot the first 30 mins looked as though he really wanted to play the ball out of defence rather than hoof it. If I was going to criticise I would say at 2-0 and 3-0 I wanted to hear him rallying the players but he remained invisible as a captain/leader.

Ifil: Hmmmm.. Lost out to Branston (I think!) in the air from the corner for the first goal. Did he commit the "foul" (those at the match will understand why foul has been place in speech marks) for the free-kick for the 2nd goal?
And made the challenge in the area for Oldham's third. Not much more needs to be said there.
Distribution was poor, especially when the pressure was on to get forward in the second half.
He is a good tackler and showed that on a number of occasions on the night, part of me says he could do a job winning the ball in midfield as long as he played it simple and left Whalley and the wingers to do the attacking. At least his lapses of concentration wouldn't leave us immediately exposed. And my god, could we do with a ball-winner in midfield.

Nicholas: Was pleased to see him start, but didn't impress me much on the night. Got muscled off the ball all too easily. Fair play to the guy though because he tried hard.

Collins: Thought he was gonna have a good game when he raped an oldham player on the nationwide touchline with a nice few touches. He tried to get forward but was left very exposed by Roberts who was non-existent in his defensive duties. Probably needs more time - he's only been with the team a week, I'd give him a chance. At fault for Oldham's first.

Whalley: Didn't live up to my expectations until the last 15 when we decided to play attack-minded, fast tempo, along the ground football. This is when we saw glimpses of his class and eye for a pass.

Pook: Can't think of much to be honest. Didn't do much wrong, clearly didn't do anything to catch my attention.

Smith: Impressed me most when playing centre mid with Whalley. Probably the hardest worker of the new signings.

Roberts: Gave the ball away embarrassingly for the Oldham second. Either he’s been given a ‘free-role’ by King or he’s taken it upon himself to play a ‘free-role’. Left us exposed too much in defence.
Took his goal very well, worked very hard and was one of only a handful of players who played with some desire. I think he showed us his laziness and brilliance in one match. Needs to be played up front or behind the front-men if he’s gonna ignore his defensive responsibilities like last night.

Cureton & Thorpe. Lumped together because there really are no distinguishing features between them. Cureton looked the livelier for a greater proportion of the game. Thorpe took his goal well. Both were getting frustrated with the endless balls lumped to them in the air (and so was I for that matter) either we play with a target man (Fallon) or we keep the ball on the f***ing ground.
I’m not gonna criticise either of them because they both tried hard and were both forced out of the game by our own style of football (until the last 15 when they showed what they can do in and around the box with the ball at their feet)

Nicolau & Shakes: Both played well and made an impact but I think we need to be careful and consider that at 3-0 down with 10 mins to go it’s hard to do much wrong as attack-minded, pacey wingers. Nicolau played a good ball to Roberts for his goal, put across some good crosses and played an excellent in-swinging corner from the Arkells side. Shakes looked fast and comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Reeves: Just did what Reeves does.

Very surprised that it was left until the very late stages of the game to introduce the substitutes although admittedly I was calling for Roberts to be replaced at half-time and he was one of the better (if not the best) performers of the second-half.

The SSP chants coming from the TownEnd were embarrassing and unnecessary.

If the person sat in seat H143 Nationwide is a member of this forum then congratulations: you’re a cock.

The thing with Pook was that he was continually out of position, Whalley was left to do everything in the heart of Midfield.

ive started a thread about the team for saturday, i think if we attack forest from the off we have a decent chance... but if the defence mess up then we will concede. when you have david johnson and scott dobie coming at you, you need o hanlon, ifil to be on form!!

I don't know much about it but it seemed like we were playing 3 in midfield, which meant that we could'nt get hold of the ball and pass it.Consequently leading to the defence hoofing the ball away, bypassing our midfield, and our midgets up front not able to win the ball, the ball then coming back to our defence leading to more pressure.Once we brought more midfielders on it looked better[don't think 3 at the back is good though, plus i don't read too much into scoring two goals against a team that was coasting it llike oldham were].Surely on saturday it will be a 4-4 2 formation otherwise the same thing will happen again.

i thought we were playing a 442 last night?

evans

collins O hanlon ifil Nicholas

roberts pook whalley smith

thorpe curo.

i still dont know if smith was meant to be playing thereor where he was playing. to be honest, its bad to say i don't think many do know what the formation was!

It just didn't look like 4-4-2 to me[and like i say,i don't know too much about it :) ],but then when roberts plays its hardly surprising,he is a forward and wants to play like one,he did his best but we need real wingers, like shakes and nicolau.

I expect Tranmere to be there or there abouts at the end of the season,
but that was a bad result for Oldham, I think they'll finish mid table.

Agree about Tranny. Think that Oldham could get into the play-offs, especially with Luke Beckett guaranteeing them goals.

He's out for 3 months though, if they can be there of there abouts when he comes back then they'll have a chance, if not then I think it'd be a big gap to make up which I wouldn't see them doing.
