Town agree permanent Byrne switch

SWINDON Town have agreed in principle a deal which would bring Nathan Byrne to the County Ground on a permanent deal this summer.

KMac on the radio saying he didn't know about this. Not good for clubs to buy players withouthtelling the manager.

The poor communication seems to be internal as well.

I heard that as well, although he did say he was not getting involved in transfers whilst there was still games to play.  I am sure he would have had some input anyway, and I don't think a previous manager had much dealings with transfers either, identify them yes but leave the wheeling and dealing to people who are paid to do just that.

Did he actually say he wasn't aware of anything or was he just passing the buck because he didn't want to talk about it? There's a couple of quotes attributed to him in the adver piece at the very least.

Still seems an odd answer from MacDonald.

I can see that he would identlify targets and then leave it to the board - no problem. But if you are the board member working on this and you get an agreement, how hard is it to send a text to the manager confirming it in order to stop your manager sounding a bit embarrassed on the radio.

Only you lot could put a negative spin on this. Fantastic signing, well done the board/Kmac.

That's the second thing I thought when I saw the headline. Firstly, surprise and pleased to see we are signing good young players on long contracts, secondly I thought, god the fans will immediately look to the negatives and say 'must be losing Thompson then'.

Kmac did say it was great news or fantastic news, something like that.

I'd like to work on the theory he has said to Jed that he wanted to keep the players at some point, and that Jed is trying to do just that.

The only negative I can see is that we don't know which league we will be in and that Byrne isn't of championship quality IMHO. But he's been bought as a low cost player we can hopefully develop so I'm not sure it's a negative just yet!

I'd say there's an element of ambiguity here...MacDonald's reaction could be because he doesn't want to talk deals until, scarf over head time, or it could be he doesn't know what is going on as the deal has been sorted by Power and Sherwood.

McCrory/Power may have sought the deal, because Thompson is on his way...could Spurs be possible...or because they want some good news to keep the    on board, whilst deflecting concern about off-field matters.

MacDonald said he scouted the Spurs lads for weeks before they came on loan didn't he? One would assume there has been discussion between him and the board about the three of them then, be it bringing them in on loan or permanently.

This is hardly Abramovich buying Schevchenko/Torres over his manager's head or anything.

Thompson and Byrne at RB/LB next season is an enticing prospect.

If it wasn't an issue then why would Kmac even speak about not knowing?
Fuck all to do with being negative or spinning it.
People within football say what they want people to hear. Nothing more

I haven't heard the interview so no idea what was said. I'd assume KMac was simply answering a question posed to him. The deal isn't done so he doesn't want to speak about it maybe? Hence:

When asked by the Advertiser about the suggestions Byrne could be on his way to Wiltshire, manager Kevin MacDonald said: “I can’t comment on the talk of Nathan Byrne coming here.

“It would be great because he’s done very, very well here, he’s a good footballer and he’s only going to improve.”

Good grief, some of the people on here could have an argument in an empty room.

My initial comment was only about communication by the board. With KMac appearing to not be completely in the loop we look a bit amateur.

One of my jobs in the past involved making sure that everybody in the organisation who might have contact with the media were briefed on breaking news, so there was no possibility of one part of the organisation contradicting or embarassing the other. Wouldn't it have been great this morning if the reaction had been "It's really good news, I asked the board to sign him and I am thrilled that they have been able to tie this talented young player down.

Even if Thompson signs a new contract he has shown himself to be somewhat injury prone, so it makes sense to have a decent back up.

Not sure what KMac said, but what exactly is the problem?

It's obviously a player he wants and has asked Jed to sign permanently, looks like Jed has lined up a deal. Don't see any reason especially at this point in the season for KMac to get involved with any potential deals. Besides, it seems to be the way a lot of (especially bigger) clubs handle transfers, manager gives the chairman a list and lets him get on with it.

be good not to have Alan Mccormack as only back up for injured full backs of which we have had more than our fair share this season. Not only he is a bit of a liability there but also (assuming he stays) his ability to get stuck in in midfield has really helped in last few games. Any long ball outfits out there a la Donny and Sheff Utd will fancy playing us though with Byrne and Nathan T to target at free kicks and corners

His defensive ability remains to be seen - ripped to shreds at Doncaster and Sheffield United and at fault for Franchise' second goal against us.

Very good on the ball though unlike our other full backs. Others have mentioned in the past that he is worth a go on the wing I would have to agree.

If you read the first few posts of this thread, people are clearly on about Kmacs comments on the radio, not his comments to the Adver.

That said, I highly doubt Jed would be signing a player behind is back so don't see any issue here. Should just be glad that we already have a deal in place to sign someone, rather than sell someone.

I brought news of the Duffen approach before it was picked up by both local and national media. Roberts was in the pipeline before he had an operation and we may be in with a chance of signing him this summer. I correctly named the Spurs targets - two of whom K-Mac opted not to sign.

I have never claimed to be in the know - I have simply passed on stuff which I believe would be of interest. Many do the opposite - claim to know something then say fuck all.
