Title: Curry options in Old Town
Post by: DMR on Thursday, March 7, 2013, 16:40:00
Ladies and gents, I know this subject gets done to death but I need your assistance.

I am taking 8 clients to the game 2 weeks Saturday and we'll be going out after, Longs then Wood St, but would like a sit down ruby before hand.

Any recommendations for curry houses in Old Town? Must be eat in, ample room somewhere for a table of 9 or 10 and of course licensed (don't know if there are any BYOB in Swindon...?)

Advice gratefully received as I am a Rodbourne Rd man normally

Curry Garden is reliable. Jewel in the Crown is large but would necessitate walking down the hill and back up again.

I've been to Ruchi several times with more than 10 people and thoroughly enjoyed it every time. From my experience it fits all your requirements.

The new Bombay Lounge opposite the Pig on the Hill is vey tasty and has a great decor. Reserve a table though as it's not very spacious.

I always go to Mela in Old Town. Think it's something to do with Monsoon down the bottom of town.

Think they've got plenty of room upstairs, might need to book for a larger table though.

The place at the top of vic hill is nice, not the one next door to the vic, the one two doors down from that. I don't know the name, but it's always good whenever I've been.

Curry Garden I believe.

That or Jewel in the Crown are your best bets from my experience.

Curry Garden or Biplob... Rucchi is a bit 'late night drunk curry where everything just tastes hot' for me.

Didn't Biplob sponsor the Swindon Town Man of the Match award during the very early 90's?

Excellent nostalgia and totally true if memory serves correctly.

Biplob is a nice place itself as well as doing some decent curry.  Sort of a bit posher than the I'm drunk and fancy a curry place.  If it's business related, it's a good choice.

Clients DMR, you? are you pimping?  Have I missed something.

If I have to go to a curry house I have a tandoori mixed grill.

Does that regain me man points?

I suppose its better than something off the "English" bit of the menu. I'd still check to see if you have grown breasts though, just in case :)

to be honest, I can't take a hot curry these days. It all peaked when an over-zealous chef put quite a few hot chillies into my chicken-chilli dansak. I still have flashbacks about the next morning whenever I hear this:

The only acceptable drink to be had in a curry house are:
 - lager

Though I assume he was talking about Chinese ..

After that game the Meca is having a German umpa night like the beerfest type nights. It's £10 a ticket which includes your stein & £4 a litre for the beer.

I saw this advertised and wondered, why? It's like going to a shit pub with bigger glasses.

I'm only going because my brother in law has brought 20 tickets for his friends for his birthday, but at £4 for a litre it is good value. Also it is something different from going to a normal pub.

It might be worth drawing people's attention, to te fact that the Curry Garden is closing for a while for a refit. When it re-opens it will try and be more authentically Islamic....namely halal meat and no alcohol.

What is this master chef ? A curry is a curry, and after 5 pints of lager you can't tell the difference between one dish and another let alone the restaurant you're sitting in.

Is there a direct correlation between the amount of alcohol you can consume and how big a cunt you are? If so, I imagine there's a lot of heavy drinkers on here.

Winning an argument about how much you can drink among English people must be akin to narrowly avoiding relegation from L2.

I regularly go out from work at about 5pm and can remember nothing after about 6.30pm so I know what you mean.  I think my memory is the first thing to go, so I wouldn't remember whether I'd had a good curry or a terrible one (or even that I'd had one at all, unless I kept the switch receipt).

It's not about how much you can drink but being unable to know where you are or what you are eating after 5 pints would put someone in the minority i'm sure.

Likewise, if you think all curry is the same then i suggest you change your curry house.
