Title: Yet another new laptop thread
Post by: ChalkyWhiteIsGod on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, 19:27:28
What I want it for

- Football Manager
- Watching films and shit (larger screen needed)
- Wanking off over Red Tube
- Writing shit on Facebook/Twitter/TEF
- Storing my music for my iPhone

Don't mind paying a bit to get a decent one which may actually last a few years.

Any suggestions?

Probably £400-500. I've done a bit of research and think I'm really looking for minimums 2.4 GHZ processor, 500GB storage and 4GB RAM but most of the ones with a decent enough processors seem to have two or three times as much storage that I need and be charging about £600-700.

How about this? £400 and ticks all the boxes. Only got onboard graphics, though the Intel HD 4000 isn't that bad.

Or this Samsung, same spec but £20 more.

What does only on board graphics mean?

Another point which seems to have confused me a little, is some have more RAM whilst others have a slightly better processor. What will be best for me given what I want to use it for?

I've picked out a few and wouldn't mind opinions in value for money

On board means built in to the processor or motherboard, they're not as powerful as a stand alone graphics.

The cpu/ram depends on what you're going to do with it, whether it's cpu intensive or ram intensive. Personally I'd go for ram, got 16Gb in my laptop and I still run out, but that's down to my workload being very heavy on ram. But ram is very cheap and can be upgraded easily (unlike the cpu), think my 16Gb cost about £80 about 6 months ago.

Thanks for clearing that up. What do you think about the two ones I posted links to? Value for money for what I'm looking for?

I don't like giving specific advice as it means I get blamed when it turns to shit.

They look ok. You might want a bigger hard drive for the iTunes library. I'd go for an i5 over an i3. I'm not familiar with the requirements for Football Manager, you might want to check that out if it's important.

It comes down to personal choice. I'd for a reliable brand (as I've had plenty of cheap laptops fall to pieces after a year or two) and check the keyboard out first as a shit keyboard I can't type on really gets on my tits. When I was using PC's I'd always go for Thinkpads as they were built like tanks and I tend to treat them a bit roughly.

I wouldn't touch a 17" (laptop) either. I prefer a high spec 13" and then a decent external monitor.
