Well slightly worse for wear, been out with the queen to some charity function in Nuku'alofa. As previously mentioned never doubt the King of Tonga.

We will romp it.

Swindon 1-3 Villa.

First goal wins it, not an earth shattering theory but if they get it then they will comfortably win.  If we get it they then the Villians will buckle and their supporters will turn on them.

2-0 Town (Ritchie & Miller)

If we play like saturday we can win this. Expecting a defeat though, but was expecting that at Stoke as well. 1-2

Playing a Premier League side so not expecting anything from the game, would be nice to see another shock again but it won't be easy at all. 1-1 and winning on penalties, head says 2-1 Villa though.

There are a few 'official figures'...football ground guide says 15,728, I believe I've seen 14,500 around along with a couple more! I presume we've lost the 1200 or so on the segregation in the Arkells after the Rovers chair incident along with the bottom right block of the stratton bank!

Apparently when we played Wigan there were just over 500 tickets unsold by Wigan (pathetic away following for a Premier league side) and the crowd that day was 13,935.

The last time we sold out a home game for both sets of fans was agains Lids U in January 2010 when there were 14,508 fans in the CG.

They're the former, although both are extremely strong feminists so any attempted advances by Suggs may well be met with a smack in the mouth.

Although maybe no-one in Plymouth will sleep with you because you're actually really nice and gentlemanly. In which case you might be in with a shout.

I once took a couple of American birds to the Manor in the early 90's....they were over for work and had read about the "English Disease", and that this game might provide an example. It was a bit embarrasssing, they were hoping for something like Luton v Millwall 1985, and what they got was something like London Irish v Harlequins.

We seem to raise our game against the better sides so with that in mind 3-2 Town with a couple of late goals from Williams and Storey adding to an earlier header from Flint to lead to the embargo being lifted and us signing a couple of players who won't be ready to play for us due to their lack of fitness

My biggest fear is that they bring a full squad and score early.

My biggest hope is they come with half a team and a bag load of complacency.

First one, a 3-0 damp squib, the second completely and utterly winnable.

Which will it be. Ask me at 8pm.

Bent didn't play on Saturday so I’d be very surprised if he doesn't play, probably with Agbonlahor or Weimann. Of course they're better than us,  but a combination of complacency, laziness and lack of confidence may just play into our hands. You never know.

I think our only real hope is if Villa players come into the game half-hearted thinking Swindon, Tuesday night, league cup.

I'm not confident though, as I have a feeling Paul Lambert is going to take this VERY seriously and put out his strongest team. Worse case scenario is they had scouts at the Stevenage game and think we play like that every week! At the moment I feel less confident at home than I do away.

Hopefully arrogant, overpaid Premiership players can be relied upon to undo themselves but i think this could be a game where a moment of Premiership quality makes the difference in a close game. Good performance passing on the deck not hoofing aimlessly at Benson and i'll be happy.

Will be nice if Given plays, and everyone claps on 19 minutes. COYR.

DAMMIT HUWWY YOU'VE SEEN RIGHT THROUGH ME.

Anyone saying we won't let in any goals is probably wrong. Bent plays(ed?) for England (on a side note- will the 'Darren Bent, is well named, Darren Bent, is well named' chant be doing the rounds?), Abonglahor is good, and Benteke has some real touches of class to his game.

All we can do is pray we act like we did against Stoke. If we go down we fight back like Chiuahahas.

And if we're doing dreams, I dreamt I was riding a giant mongoose through Swansea town centre last night. No idea what that means, but here's hoping it's the mongoose of victory.

of course we can, they have 6 points from 9 games in the prem, have a goal difference of -7 and are looking very shaky.  as a comparison stoke are not a great deal better off with 9 points in 9 and a goal difference of -1.  we completely outplayed them so no reason why we can't outplay and beat villa.

trouble is villa will have a lot more pace than stoke and this is a worry.

i'm sure though that this is going to be a fantastic game of football.

Should be about an hour and 15 minutes. But no trains out of Paddington usually means no trains from Reading to Swindon, so you'll need a backup plan for how to get to the ground from Reading.

PDC:
- We could have scored before they did
- Disappointing especially as second have was so spectacular
- First chance in second half disappointing that Benson didnt arrive in time
- Difference from 2 leagues above is finishing in 6 yard box
- Amazing performance and am very very happy
- We were 45 mins in their half playing with quality and discipline
- Happy to see player play with this quality and intensity
- Storey is very intelligent and has listened. More disciplined and professional
- Storey is still at the base of his improvement
- PDC seemed happy that Storey had listened to advice he had given about attacking near post
- PDC will use him sparingly to help him develop

He said on Saturday that Storey had grown up this year. Last year he had the swagger of a professional footballer and a stupic haircut to go with it. PDC obviously told him he had to be more professional and he has taken that on board. He now has a more normal, rather than a poseur's hairstyle.

Proud of the lads. What a brilliant second half display.

Things are really looking up now we have a potent strike force in Williams and Storey. We're gonna piss this league  :D. The only downside is our full backs. Devera is non-league and McEverley has been poor for a while. At least Thompson's fit again.

What a game, absolutely fantastic. I could've watched that game all night. We were unlucky with that goal line clearance in the first half. The whole team did themselves proud, the support was amazing tonight. Villa were lucky with their winner, but I think that was down to us just running out of steam. I am glad Villa took us seriously tonight, if we play every game like we did tonight we'd piss the league. It's nights like this that makes me proud to be a Town fan.

Proud and gutted at the same time. Give a Premier League team an inch and they take a mile, or a goal in this case.

We did well in the first half and were the better team in the second half. Within a gnats dick of beating them, Williams so nearly putting us 3-2 up but losing his footing at the last.

However their finishing was clinical. Simple as that.

Devera was way out of his depth tonight and got ripped apart nearly every time.  He was at fault for the first 2 goals, as was McEveley for the third.  I suppose it's the pace of premier league forwards, although at times Villa didn't look Premier League.

I thought we played some superb stuff at times.

Gutted we lost tonight. We didn't deserve that at all. We were the better team the difference though was the class in the final third with the finishing. Even before their first we could have opened the scoring with the one that was cleared off the line.

Very spirited performance none the less and the fact that the Villa fans celebrated like they had won the cup let alone the game at the end told the story.

Onwards and upwards. If we play like that every week in league one we'll at least finish in the top 6.

We did indeed and Batch is right that their finishing was more clinical, plus they were less hesitant to take the shot, with the obvious and rather magnificent exception of Storey. "Storey Glorey" headline for tomorrow?

Great game... we played some really nice stuff, and could (should?) have had a haul had our finishing/final ball been better. Villa and their strikers were more clinical than we were, and that was the main difference.

Williams changed the game, Collins worked tirelessly (hope it's appreciated by fans despite not much goal return), Storey looks like he could be a decent striker. Flint was great (despite another stupid yellow), and virtually everyone put in an admirable shift. Also, great save from Wes at 2-0 down.

The following observations are not based solely on this game (but have been spurred by todays match):
 - Devera and McCormack need to swap. Macca hasn't looked too assured in the middle this year, and had a storming performance at full back the other day. Devera isn't a full back.
 - I'm yet to be properly impressed by Roberts. Should have put one away tonight at the far post but was scared of putting his head in where it was needed, and doesn't get enough crosses in.
 - McEveley has forgotten how to cross since his purple patch a few weeks ago.

Really proud of the effort, style, skill, and endeavour on show... hope we carry it forward.

I Got to shake Wrays hand before KO and tell him what a decent bloke he is. He was sat in front of us and believe me he jumped up higher than anyone when we scored our 2nd! Agbonlahor is a twat and what respect I had for him has now gone,Made himself look a right Cock but it was made worse by the ref not even having a word with him. Could of done without the bottle throwing though, thought we were trying to save money. Bit of a kick in the balls to concede so late but so proud to follow Swindon.

Oh and one final thing tonight. I'm fucking sick of my ST card never scanning in the turnstiles. Such a shite system. Nearly got refused entry tonight even though i'd paid for this game all because the card wouldn't scan properly. It takes about 2-3 attempts at all league games but they normally give up and let me in. Given it was a cup game tonight the girl on the gate wasn't going to do that. She had to suffer my abusive language before letting me through. I'm all for the cards but it would be nice if they worked.

We did very well to come back and the last quarter of the game was superb, but up until then I thought we were average, with only Miller, Ritchie, Ferry and Collins having good games. Then it all clicked into place when the subs were made. Williams didn't look 100 per cent, but rather than rely on raw pace, tonight he showed a bit of inventiveness. De Vita was immediately more direct and threatening than Roberts (who I hope turns into the player we know he can be...he just hasn't really shown up for us yet). Storey had some good touches and looks strong and quick. I say play him whilst he's on a roll, don't hold him back.

Villa looked like a team of decent  players playing without confidence or cohesion. Weimann looked very good particularly - everything went through him. Ultimately, I think they'll scrape survival, but I wouldn't put it beyond the realms of possibility to see them back next year.

First half I'd have agreed with the above, our final ball/shot was disappointing. We worked hard to contain Villa without throwing caution to the wind.

Second half I'd totally disagree with the above, we were the better team. We broke Villa down time and time again, and they also contributed to their own near demise with some woeful passing as we pressed. Its fair to say their attack looked more cutting in accuracy and execution, but we are a third division team -what did said person expect a comparison to show?

Yes we'd need to be more clinical in the championship, and tighter at the back. So in that respect our squad isn't championship standard right now. But again, did they expect us to be?

I wasn't at the game, but in the interest of some balance, I think those saying we battered them are possibly being a bit blinkered. At times in the second half we put a lot of pressure on, but even on the radio it was clearly a close game, and we seemed a close second best in the first half.

The guy saying we were outclassed the whole time also seems to have a very one-sided view of the game though, even if he does claim to have been supporting Town tonight!

Title: Re: Official matchday thread Swindon Town v Aston Villa
Post by: Notts red on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 23:41:48
My worry was conceding a third after the re start and the game just pittering out as a contest, we always have at least a ten minute spell when attacking the town end (  it's tradition ) it's just whether we can score during that spell that often makes the difference. They gave us the respect we have earned this season and because of that they got themselves a place in the next round.

Well, we made a fist of it.

At 2 zip down another goal would of resulted in a battering for us.  But we rallied and on another night we might just of pulled it off.

Villas clinical punishment of slight mistakes in the first half showed why they are in the Premiership....the sheer amount of chances we pissed away and the goals we scored showed why they are dog shit in the PL and the Champions league celebration by them at the death showed what it meant to them and 'standing in quicksand' Lambert who's arse must of healed over at 2-2.
Villa will be praying that Rangers and Saints will continue to be whipping boys to enable them to skank clear...I didn't see anything to say they will play themselves out of trouble.

It was a good run and I will never forget the night at Stoke for many a year....roll on Sheffield United!

They've won the European Cup for fuck's sake. If I was a bored billionaire I'd have a look at Villa.

Thought the difference tonight was pace, in their passing, in their movement and in their heads they were just that bit quicker than us. That's why they're Premier League players. But we acquitted ourselves magnificently in the second half - particularly the first 10-15 mins, which was to be expected, and again after the substitutions. De Vita, Williams and Storey all had something to worry Villa: touch in the case of the first two, and pace in the case of the latter.

The better side probably nicked it overall, but the fact Lambert was on the pitch celebrating their winner I think tells us all we need to know about how that second half went. Proud of the team tonight, and the manager. Does anyone still seriously think we could afford to lose Di Canio? We'd never find someone of his quality to take over.

If you look at the league placings of the team, Premier League v League One we hammered them second half. It wasn't 2 comparable teams playing each other, they brought on Bent who is worth more than our entire team.

Overall it was a fairly even affair but we edged it without a doubt and allowing for the gulf in obvious class and league placings, we did very well.

Oh and Gabby Agbonlahor giving it the big one against a league one side. Well done Gabby. Found your level at last.

More Flabby than Gabby I'd say, although he took the goal well.

I also listened on the radio - the radio normally frustrates me, but last night was absolutely gripping, seemed like end to end stuff, never enjoyed a game on the radio as much (appart from the result of course)

Think she tried mine about 5 times to be fair to her. It wasn't exactly her fault but it just pisses me off as it's not just the once but pretty much every game this season.

So when you raised it with the club, what did they say?

Very proud this morning, and a little hoarse!  Even at 2-0 down, I thought we were still in with a shout.  We were inventive throughout - especially in the second half - and never stopped creating chances.  And Paolo's subs worked a treat.  De Vita and Storey both magnificent.

Changed trains at Reading on the way back home and found myself surrounded by bemused Arsenal fans who couldn't quite believe what they had just seen at the Madejski.  Smattering of shell shocked Reading fans as well.  I had my very stylish retro red & white scarf with me (birthday present from Mrs Ardiles) and got mistaken for one of their lot, despite the fact I was reading a copy of the Adver with a massive picture of PDC on the back.  They were pleasant enough with it though, so I couldn't be bothered to correct them.

Saw the goals last night on Sky. As has been said on here, all 3 of Villa's goals were clinical, Agbonloahor's finish looked like it almost took the net out! Storey's second goal was a sublime finish, I guess aided by his bundled first, he must have been on cloud nine!! Sadly Benteke was given far too much time and room in the last minute and showed a calm finish. A few people on here said he was crap before the game, but I think he'll be a decent striker for Villa this season.

For us, another great cup evening, despite the result! Hopefully another one to come on Saturday!

Very impressed with Williams when he came on, seems to have intelligence and pace. Guessing we've missed him badly over the past few weeks.

Same. Took me about 10 tries before it flicked green.

Mine was doing that from the start of the season, took it back into the ticket office on the advice of the turnstile bloke and have had it reprinted.  Took about a month to get it back and was sent paper tickets in the meantime, but have had no problems since.

Very much to their credit, proper fans of a proper club...something I can't stand is fans of Champion's League regulars, who can barely raise a round of applause, when they score a goal against some inferior opposition, because they expect it.

Of the four defeats I've seen now vs Villa, that was the closest.  I've got nothing against their lot at all.  The Villa fans I met on the way to the game were genuine enough.  They're not the force they once were, and the fans know it.  They seem pretty grounded to me.

The stand out memory of the visit to Villa Park in 1993/94 was the Holte End terrace.  The noise, and the way it just went back, and back, and back, and back...

I was very impressed by that.

A great game to be at and despite the final result, a game to look back on with a degree of pride.

Collins and Benson both were a pain in the arse of the Villa midfield and defence.

Ritchie had some sublime moments- nicking the ball of the Villa player with a cheeky back heel at the touchline in the second half was a joy to watch. He suffered fom not having the interplay with the right back. I think Devera and McCormack should have switched as Alan seems to offer better options going forward.

Roberts seems to have vision and a football brain but, at the moment, his touch and ability don't match his vision. The change in the game when he was swapped for Raffa was obvious.

Miller had some really good moments and was solid for most of the game. I would say the same for Jay though his distribution from the back let him down at times.

Storey is growing into a real prospect. If he continues his development in the way he has over the last 12 months, he could be a real prospect for the club, either as a goal scorer or as a source of a big transfer fee. I agree with Paolos apparent plan to ease him into regular football. I would hate for a really promising young lad we were developing to burn out or fall foul of the recurring injury bug through too speedy a rise.

To cap off the evening, SWMBO and I gave a rousing chorus of "4 nil and you fucked it up!" as we drove past junction 11 on the way home :D

My first trip to Villa Park was for the 2nd replay v Nottm Forest 5th round cup 67, a neutral ground, as happened back then.

Town were given the Holte End, crowd of just about 53,000, so it was full of STFC fans, no idea how many it held, but possibly not far off how many were there last night. Up to that point think it was the biggest crowd I'd been in, and was awesome. Outside of Wembley, don't think I've seen such a one stand gathering of Town fans since.

I've always maintained a good, successful season in a league below beats the pants off middle-for-diddle mediocrity in a league above.

Last season for us being a good example.

Villa could do with being relegated, a successful season in the Championship will at least give the fans the buzz again and could well be a springboard for a more competitive team when back in the PL

Fuck me, what a day. Caught the train from Pads at quarter past 2 (so luckily avoided any idiots throwing themselves onto the tracks), but only just, having to deal with some eejit pushing the emergency stop on the DLR between Poplar and Canary Wharf stations, and us not being allowed off until they got the train moving 20 mins later (for those not familliar, it's about 30 yards away).

Pre-match saw Ritchie parked up with his girlfriend looking at a map at the edge of old town. You'd think he'd know where he's going by now! Villa fans all seemed pretty pleasant, had a nice chat with a bunch of lads who were looking for a pub.

First half, in fact for the whole game, Devera was massively out of his depth and might as well not have been on the pitch. Gabby and Ireland did all Villa's work for them really, two major threats. Bit cunty to celebrate twice in front of our fans too- once I can understand, but the second time was taking the piss. Unlucky not to have the scramble go in, but half time came around and I was still confident we could pull our arses out the fire. Americans were a bit disappointed I think but still enjoying themselves.

Second half was tense, and the introduction of De Vita and Storey (obviously) changed the game. Roberts just didn't have the finishing touch down the left, and I was hoping Di Canio would bring De Vita on for him (not Ritchie, as the fourth official thought originally...).  First goal went in and we were ecstatic, second goal the place fucking erupted (Yanks and all). Unfortunately the wish that we could hold on for Extra time didn't come true, but then when you make Premiership teams scramble substitutes you have to be proud of yourselves. Wes pulled off a cracking save before they pulled it back to prolong the inveitable, but apart from that, and a fingertip save in the first half, he couldn't do much other than pick the ball up out of his net.

Perhaps what most interested me most (haven't seen the boys play a lot this year) is the way Ritchie and Ferry were comfortable switching places regularly. I think putting Alan Mac or Nathan Thompson on the Right and Troy in the Centre with Flint is probably our best option right now. Alan Mac did one of his mazy runs right through Villa's midfield again come to think of it, just needed to shoot unfortunately.

Second goal is one of the best worked Town goals I've seen.

Super proud, very hoarse, and we were so SO close. Unlike Reading however, we can't blame ourselves... Paolo will just win the FA cup to make up for it.

Ritchie made a couple of errors and Di Canio reacted by signalling to De Vita he was going on. The ball then didn't go out of play for a good few minutes and in that time Ritchie whipped in a cross that nearly led to a goal and Roberts made a hash of a ball to him. Di Canio then changed his mind and took Roberts off.  That was why no 10 came up on the board and over the tannoy it announced De Vita replacing Ritchie, that was initially what was going to happen.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, apologise if it has. Storey has been put on stand by for England's U19's game v Finland. Apparently Stuart Pearce was at the County Ground last night but that may be because Villa have such a young side and not just to watch Miles  ;)

Pearce lives just outside Marlborough doesn't he? Good news for Storey as it's an easy place for him to get to and watch him.

If you went back and apologised to the girl later it was my daughter, she said that some gobby twat had spastic fit when his ticket wouldn't work and started f'ing and blinding at her.  He then came back and apologised.  If that wasn't you, then it looks like you weren't the only one!

Whoever it was, lucky I wasn't stood behind them in the queue!  ;D

What a great game it was....the noise when we equalised was incredible.
Saw Pearce turn up and park in front of the Burger van and the cries of he parks where he wants,he parks where he wannnnnnts.....hes fuckin physco,he parks where he wants!
Back to the match and thought Ferry probably had his best match in a Town shirt....amazing workrate and discipline to keep our shape of play even when we were two down.
Flint had a great game also in my view.
As for Storie....his style of play and his finising reminds me of Craig Maskel.
A great cup night....and who knows we may get them in the FA cup later on in the season.

I went back and apologised, I thought it was the gentlemanly think to do, I was just anxious I would miss the start and she took my apology with good grace. You should be proud of her mate she was a credit to the club.

We met for a drink afterwards and she let me bum her and shot it all over her tits.

I didn't go back so must have been someone else. Was she on the Town End ones? I didn't actually have at a go at her directly, I just said "I always have this problem every week" to which she responded saying because it's a cup game she shouldn't let me in but there was a bloke behind me who piped up and said "you need to take it to the ticket office mate" to which my reaction was "fuck that I just want to see the game" in the end she just let me through as I was holding the queue up. The bloke behind me later saw me and said "sorry about that mate" probably because he thought he had pissed me off.

First of all, what a cracking night!  Mighty proud to be a Town fan & thought we did ourselves credit.  Great game & the atmosphere was tremendous.

I too have the problem every week with my ST?  Which was made worse last night by the fact that there was a big queue & I was dying for a dump!

Got caught out on the A419 & the A34 which added an extra hour to the trip.

Best mate is a Shrews fan so I do venture on their forum more often than is healthy. They really do seem like a terribly embittered lot over there. Happy to bask in the Paolo success, deep down they'd love to have someone as animated as him. Long may he reign  :D

In fairness of few of them on the thread have pointed out that football is richer with characters like Paolo, so I best not broadbrush the lot of them.

Graham Turner must have been on the monkey glands for years.

They have found their level - no disgrace in that - but their fans seem to have trouble in accepting that fact.

But when you build a new stadium with such a small capacity what message does that give to their fans?

Haven't posted since the game and whilst I was impressed and proud of the Town team, I think a lot on here have got some pretty big rose tinted glasses on.
Possession means fuck all if you don't take advantage of it and we didn't. Villa looked to me like they could step up a gear or two, but they didn't need to for much of the game as we weren't doing enough with the ball when we had it.
Saying that, we could've won towards the end and when our equaliser went in I was going mental! Brilliant game to watch and we did ourselves credit again, against higher league opposition. I hope the game spurs on the team to replicate that performance in the league; it may not have been enough against Villa (Just), but against League One opposition we'd run away with it!

Villa struggled to get a point at home to Norwich last weekend so they've got their work cut out if they are going to beat them at Their place in the Quarters. Pleased for Bradford, obviously Arsenal will be clear favourites now to get to the Semi's, who'd of thought that after being four down at Reading last night !

agbonlahor was booed before any goals were scored by quite a few in the town end - no idea why - so you can sort of see why he 'gave it the big one' - also what paolo did at the end may well be seen as worse by the villa fans.  austin used to do it all the time and he was loved for it.

He was booed because if memory serves it was him who went down like a sack of spuds after Flint came into the side of him to grab the ball, earning Flint his yellow.

Yep, no different to the ones that saw him sent off vs Scunthorpe.

As for the game, I suppose there's not much more for me to add now. Maybe we should have settled down a bit after the equaliser but we could all smell blood and if we had conceded and not gone for it, I think we'd all be a bit more disappointed.
