It's new phone o'clock.

Wife dropped her phone and needs a new one, which somehow translates to she wants my iPhone and I can buy a new phone.

I'm looking at a Galaxy S III to move away from  Apple. The cheapest unlocked handset I've found online is about £475 here which seems cheaper than the UK.

I use my phone mainly for Internet, apps, music etc so the larger 720p screen on the SIII is what appeals most.

A few questions:

Is the SIII 4G compatible or should I wait?
Those who replaced an iPhone with an SIII, what do you think about the difference?
Will this thread turn me into 4D?

Not yet. But they're bringing out an LTE version soon. Be careful though as you may find that the 4G spectrum in Norway is different to the UK one. Also the US S3 LTE has a different chipset and is dual core rather than quad core. Which actually probably makes very little difference but if you wanted to boast about having quad core, you'd need to be aware of that.

Might also be worth looking at the LG Optimus 4X - seems to offer a lot of bang for the buck, but without the S3 premium. Not sure on 4G though

Whichever you get make sure you try it first, I was all set to get an S3 but when I tried it in the shop realised my dainty mitts weren't really big enough to use it comfortably, the new generation of Android phones seem to have been designed by people with monkey hands.

I changed iPhone to Galaxy S2 and would never go near an iPhone now. I can honestly say that I havent found anywhere yet where the iPhone was better.

I've gone from an iPhone to the Galaxy Note, and have played on an SII and SIII... I wouldn't move away from Samsung for a while if both firms continue along the same lines.

cheers for the replies. I had a look at the S III yesterday and, like pauld, I have girly hands so the handset did feel bulky but presumably the iPhone 5 will be the same.

4D - not a problem, it's her money. I am a kept man nowadays

Good advice even in the UK. From what I have seen, the original EE LTE compatible iPhone 5 for example will not be compatible with other UK LTE providers (except 3, when they get the spare 1800Mhz bandwidth).  This may limit your market when reselling later.


Unless LTE phones don't catch on. And without tethering and high data caps why would they (sits back and waits for EE's pricing plans) !

The iPhone 5 is no wider than the 3 or 4, just taller, so you should be okay.

I'm actually a little torn about upgrading at the moment, for no reason that I can fathom, other than I must have an urge to waste money on shiny shit. I don't require an upgrade from my iPhone 3GS, but since one sister upgraded to a 4S and the other a 5, I am getting ever more enthused by the idea of those 2 phones.

I've only been using a "smart phone" for about a year (I barely use any apps) and I'm already starting to get sucked into the unnecessary upgrade wars! :)

When are we going to stop calling them phones?  The phone bit has become almost incidental.
