Title: Fairford Air Show
Post by: The Grim Reaper on Friday, July 6, 2012, 08:49:31
Not really wanting to shell out £80 for 2 tickets so was just wondering if anyone knew of any good locations where you watch for free or if any farmers opening up a field for a small fee etc?

You can usually watch it from atop that hill at blunsdon.

Never been myself, but I imagine somewhere like Lechlade would be a good spot.

Most roads in the vicinity of the airfield get closed. You could try parking up somewhere like South Cerney or Lechlade.

A beer garden in blunsdon would be better.

We're fortunate enough to see the airbase from our bedroom window, but nothing beats being there as they rarely fly directly over the town.

Indeed Batch, believe they are only flying as a seven at B'mth this year. Such a sad year. The ultimate of their profession

Such a sad year. The ultimate of their profession

Éclat as the motto says.

The tin triangle hasn't made it to Fairford yet. Technical hitch. Hope its not engine related, they only just changed 2 engines after the old ones ingested a silicon gel pack and blew up.

You get a pretty good view from Lus Hill, near Hannington. Whelford and near Marston Meysey have very good views too. They don't normally close the roads, they just turn it into a one way system.

That is very nice indeed. I saw the Vulcan a few times as a kid at Greenham Common when they used to have the air show there. This is another of my favourites, still going strong after 70 years. Amazing, nothing like seeing it 'in the flesh' of course...

Those plains are indeed ace OST.

Technology really sped up after the war.  First Lancaster test flight : January 1941 Vulcan 1st test Flight : August 1952. 11 years. I think I have 11 year old socks.

Vulcan was as good as ever (pity it didn't take off - will do on Sunday), Lancaster/Spitfire made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, other displays restricted by low cloud, fast loud jets were brilliant but for me the stand outs were the helicopter pilots - just mental.

Met some old colleagues from RIAT and didn't get too wet so had a great day.

Title: Re: Fairford Air Show
Post by: Batch on Saturday, July 7, 2012, 19:02:11
Good stuff Bewster.

Vulcan should have arrived Friday, but technical hit meant it got delayed. They had to do a display validation flight at Farnborough before allowed to display at Fairford. They did validation and flew straight to display after.

Saw the Reds and I think the Spit fly over the back garden. They don't usually come out this way. Hope tomorrow is mainly dry.

Out here, we sometimes get the Vulcan booked for the White Horse Show (big country show). It really is a sight to behold.

There's also a bloke near Abingdon who owns a few WWII aircraft and flies them out this way. It made me doubletake when I first saw a Spitfire and ME109 over the village!

Arrows and the Lancaster/Spitfire/Hurricane flew over my dad's place while I was round there yesterday, sounded so good!

My uncle was a navigator in a Vulcan, his house was always full of models and paintings of them. Love them.

They did a transit to Farnborough today, did the plane it was with sound like a prop plane? If so it was

If it sounded more Jet like it was this:

To be honest Batch it could of been either of those but am now disappointed I didn't get outside quick enough to see what was before the Vulcan. I did see a couple of Spitfires messing about over Cribbs this weekend but not sure if they were connected to the Fairford show, probably. About a hour after that what looked like an Airbus came really low before pulling up and banking sharply away, being close to Filton perhaps they were testing one?

Wasnt There a Korean team at Fairford this year similar in numbers to the Red Arrows?

Just had a look and if it wasn't the Red Arrows it was probably the South Korean Black Eagles. Black and white in colour with splashes of Yellow. Apparently they were dismantled in Korea, flown to Manchester and rebuilt at RAF Leeming for the show.

My dad was stationed at Little Rissington then Kemble until he fucked off.  Part of his  job was painting and stickering up aircraft, presumably the arrows were included in that.

I do vaguely recall sitting in a red arrow* on an RAF Kemble family day, but I was only about 3 so it its a bit hazy. That pretty much makes me a pilot.

* to be honest, it could have been a mock up, but I like to think not.
