Title: Memory Stick Missing Files
Post by: donkey on Friday, April 13, 2012, 08:39:56
Time to call upon the knowledge of this esteemed organ...

I recently got a 64gb memory stick and have transferred 60gb of music on to it (about 9000 files).  They show (and songs play) whilst it is plugged in, but as soon as I take it out and then put it in again (oo-er), I am reduced to about 2000 visibile songs.  The properties of the mem stick show 60gb of data being used, howver.e

Any help on how to resolve would be gratfully appreciated.

Ta.

Try going to Organize >> Folder and Search Options >> View >> Show hidden files and folders.

Worth a try. (Don't know why the music would be hidden though)

When you formatted it, did you format it as FAT or NTFS?

FAT will only show a maximum of 32GB IIRC, so you'll be wanting to format it as NTFS.

I have changed the format to NTFS.  What about Allocation Unit Size does that matter?

Edit:  Quick format or not?

Cheers for your help.

FAT was limited to 32Gb but that was replaced some time ago by FAT32.

FAT32 can go to 2Tb and above, except Windows can only format them to 32Gb (an arbitrary Microsoft limit). You can get round this 32Gb limit by using a 3rd party utility or formatting on a Mac. Windows can handle FAT32 drives above 32Gb, it just can't format them.

Just hit quick format for NTFS, leave any settings to the defaults.

Not sure this is the cause of the problem though. The stick would have come formatted to it's full capacity and you wouldn't have been able to copy all that data if it wasn't.
