Want a personalised number plate, been looking at one on the DVLA website.

If I buy it, for examples sake it is A12 BCD and I get the plate made so it says A1 2BCD is that legal?

They don't appear to say anything specific about older styles but I believe the same rules apply and that you're not allowed to fuck about with the lettering or spacing.

But people do

Spacing is a legal matter and has to be in the right place - the only space that must exist is between the numbers and three letters (this principle apples to all types) changing the spacing will result in MOT failure as will not using standard fonts

DVLA do have the right to recall your plate if it is being altered to look like something different but I haven't heard of an actual case but would imagine it would do so where the letters/numbers are made to look different (5 into an S or 6 into a G etc)

As Mr Macphlea says changig spacings on a number plate can cost you a fine of more than you paid for the number plate itself.

Best thing to do is leave it alone and let people work out for themselves what your message is.

I bought an unreleased personalized plate from the DVLA and havent changed the spacing at all as its just not worth it long term with MOT fails and fines.

If you move the spacing, and get stopped then you won't get fined just a 14 day rectify notice. Yes if you move the spacing it will fail the MOT. Just change the plates over before/after. I've had mine for about 12 years, and been stopped twice.

I have recently bought a new car, but haven't put my 'old' plates on just cos I cannot afford to buy 'show' plates.

Number plate in question is STFC related  :wink: should look pretty good, will use the better halfs car for away days when it is my turn to drive

Why would you want a personalised number plate?  Each to their own, but personally they only tell me one thing about the driver.

Rightly or wrongly, I'd think that a personalised plate will be an invitation to have your car keyed

Shouldn't imagine plate alone would warrant people to key it in our home town, however I only use the car for journeys to and from work, odd drive at weekend around Town, if was commuting to Oxford daily it may be a little different!

Had my plates for 7 years and never been keyed.  Mind you they arent football related so that may be the difference and to be honest you probably wouldn't even know they are personal plates... Unless you saw the two of them side by side...

Me too, had mine 4 years and no ill effects but again I wouldn't ever get a football related one, mine is related to my band and my wife.

I've never experienced an issue, not even in Oxford/Reading/Bristol.
