Title: Oxford - Away Pub / Train
Post by: Give us an S on Friday, March 2, 2012, 07:42:25
Sorry if this is mentioned somewhere else. But has anyone heard mention of an away pub. Its annoying that we announced they would have the Merlin and it would be opened early but nothing has been done for us. I have no interest in getting the dry train so want to get a train up earlier but have no idea what will happen in Oxford.

I cant imagine they will just let people roam the streets, but if you get there at 9am they surely wont take you to the ground. They will want people to be in a pub near the station then lay on buses at about 11 I reckon.

Last time it was on a Sunday and the trains started later and they were less frequent so the had a far easier job. Although they tried to hold us for a while then they lost control a bit. Surely they wont make the same mistakes.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything of any plans at all?

Thames Valley police wouldnt pint us having a couple of  :pint: s, however, eric read will have other ideas. his mob will have spotters on every station- Didcot, Radley and Oxford. As soon the train pulls up things are gonna get proper nawty. Dont you remember august? super eric single handedly 'took' the county ground hotel after his rampage down manchester road.

I for one will be mightly glad when this godforsaken game is over, win lose or draw,

the constant hype and analysis is getting too much now and is playing havoc with my nerves...

roll on daggers, thats what I say..

There aren't many pubs near the station particularly ones that open early. Best bet is the Four Candles Weatherspoons on George Street - about 10 minute walk.

There were rumours that we were to be given the Catherine Wheel which is about 20 minutes from ground and opens at 09:30 but I think that is unlikely.

Apart from that dunno. I'm staying in Didcot to last minute then getting a lift straight to ground. Just want to get in, win, get out as quick as possible and never want to see that tin pot ground again.

Tomorrow is what being a football fan is all about. The excitement of a local derby away from home. I've waited 10 years for payback from the last visit. Personally it's more important than the JPT, but that's just me. So I will savour every moment rather than wish it over.

Cool, cheers. I doubt we will have much say where we go. Was hoping they would open a pub early and stick us in there, then bus us to the ground. Will soon find out I guess.

Let's try and have a thread without mentioning that prick Eric?

Probably would have announced it by now if we were being given a pub?

I reckon if you try and get on an earlier the train the police will try and keep anyone that looks like they're going to football to one side and put them on the "dry train".

Probably right, depends if you get their early enough to escape the net i suppose.

Do they serve in the ground?

Usually, but I would imagine that policy will change tomorrow.

Just get someone to chuck it over the fence.

They should have a beer hose from the fence end. Someone hire a fire truck and fill it with beer.

Update: apparently Four Candles (open at 9) is now not serving alcohol until 12. Have also just spoken to Poxford supporting sister-in-law and she says pubs nearer the ground will be asking for proof of home ticket before entry.

So basically if you get into Oxford early it looks like you'll remain a thirsty chap.

We do seem overly hospitable to them in hindsight (and i think a fair number bemoaned it at the time), with them getting masses of tickets and a dedicated away pub within walking distance.

You have to remember that the posh bit of Oxford dont want Swindon fans in the City centre, and they want Oxford United fans in the centre even less.
