And obvious point, but check to see whether St Pauli are at home while you're there. The Millerntor is just a short walk from the Reeperbahn. Have checked and we won't be able to catch a game. The hotel we are in is smack in between the Alster and the Reeperbahn, so handy for pretty much everything. Spent quite a bit of time in the st pauli area during the day and there is quite a big selection of bars in the Reeperbahn for the evening. As Whits said, we found some excellent German bars in an area called Sternschanze (there is a tube station called this, to make it easy!)... bit less chav-tastic and it seemed cheaper. Reeperbahn will see to all your needs in the evening, Grosse Freiheit being a pretty decent street that runs off it. The same guy was telling me that drug dealers/users have "pet" rats that they try the heroin on before they buy it.

There is indeed a few dodgy areas, but on the whole there is so much to do Bar tips, hm well it depends what you look for. There are traditional style pubs where a lot of english speakers end up, as well as Irish bars. As said Schanze is alternative, not so commercial as the Reeperbahn..but the best parties are mostly on the Reeperbahn.
