No it's a rarity...never seen one before today. I'd love to hear one, but apparently they only do the boom in the breeding season. Heron are quite common, but still a spendid sight....I've seen Little Egret at Coate, and it seems they're becoming more numerous, a nice looking bird. Any idea what that might have been? There's a Purple Heron, which is darker in colour to the common heron, you get the odd visitor here, but it is resident in France.. There are about 35 pairs resident in the UK....some wander in during winter from the continent, which I'm guessing this bird has done.
