Train to Reading, change for one to Slough, change - on platform 1 - to Windsor

What's the cheapest way of getting tickets?
A day travelcard?

Do you have to stop at Reading?
The train use to go on to Twyford, Maidenhead then Slough. I thought it was only the fast train you had to stop at Reading which is normally more expensive.
If you have to get off at Reading you can always catch a bus from straight outside the station to Windsor takes about 40 mins.

To be honest though I would put my thumb out and hitch at least to Reading, Slough never had a problem in the past when I was a youngster.

That journey will always involve two changes, once at Reading and then again at Slough.  But you can still do it in well under 1½ hours if you choose the right trains.

This is a sign I am getting old - back in the 80's I had a girlfriend in Windsor, and regularly got the train there, but I can only remember having to change at Reading. My memory has wiped out Slough completely.

That's no bad thing. Come friendly bombs...

It is well recognised that the human mind will often attempt to eradicate memories of upsetting events or traumas in this way.  Soldiers from war zones, for example, will often have little recollection of the horrors they had to face while they were in action.  And in your case, it is not at all surprising that you brain has attempted to purge itself of any memory of passing through Slough.

Windsor has two stations - one which serves between slough and windsor and one which goes out toward london. It is possible that 30 years ago trains would have gone from reading to windsor on that line.

Slough is shit.

Sorry, but no. To get to Windsor Riverside you would have to change at Reading and then again at Staines.

OK, so I take a train. Change at Reading to Slough. Then Slough to Windsor and Eton Central?

Are all these trips valid via travelcard?

I know thats the case now. Just a suggestion that it could have been possible in the '80s.

'Fraid not. You've always had to change at Staines to get back to Windsor.

So is travelcard only for use in London?

I would have to just get a return ticket?

Yes a travel card is for use in London which will cost more any way.
You just need a return from Swindon to Windsor.
www.fgw.co.uk will be show you times and fares.

Can't get it working. Put in the destination and departure places, and the times.. It opens a new window and continues to load... Won't load.

Off-peak return is 36 squid. Darn, I thought it'd be cheaper.

Works for me.

Super Off-peak return is £28.60 first train that it seems to be valid on is 10:41 from Swindon arrives in Windsor at 11:56.

Might be able to get it cheaper by splitting it but i'm not sure how complicated you want to make it!

Ah Super Off-Peak is no good for me.

I'm not too sure what the official time is in Swindon, cause I don't live there. Maybe a local commuter can help there?
But it appears  Off-peak starts at 9:30 and then also you have Super off-peak that starts around 10:40.  But you return journey will also affect the price.
So are you returning on the same day and what time? Because it could be during the evening peak.

Rather than being on here can I suggest 5 minutes on Google to answer all your questions.

Actually have I fallen into a trap here?

Being a Windsor boy I remember the steam trains coming into Windsor Central, had my cut in the barbers which was alongside the platform now a posh restaurant and watching the crumpet coming in from all over the world to visit beautiful Windsor Castle.
In the old days you use to get off at Slough from the west or east and walk straight onto the Slough-Windsor train with a maximum of a five minute wait.

Going to London use to buy a Windsor-Slough return and get off at Paddington and most of the times made it without being caught, same on the way back. Now that was a cheap day ticket.

Still love Windsor, just a shame it has lost most of its pubs.

Its just ocurred to me that this is a wind up
