Title: A Full English.
Post by: leefer on Sunday, January 22, 2012, 13:18:15
Now on the back of Donkey's pie club it got me thinking.
Dangerous at times i know but Swindon is full of Chinese,Italian,Indian restaurants as well as some good chippys and crap fast food places.
And of course many of these places serve up top nosh.

For a while now i have thought that a good English restaurant would be a gold mine in Swindon, serving good old fashioned British foods like Bangers and Mash,Liver and Onions,Cottage Pie,and a variety of pies with spuds gravy and fresh veg.
Good old English basic food.......all sourced from local food.

Where in Swindon(apart from pubs)can you go and get Liver, mash and onion gravy....lamb chops and green beans, egg ham and chips the list is endless.
Now i know there are some good pubs that do it and the odd cafe who give it a go........but i reckon an authentic British Grub restaurant would be very welcome and make lots of good English money :D

What do you reckon people, its just an idea and off course isn't an anti other food idea.

Weighbridge Brewhouse (http://www.weighbridgebrewhouse.co.uk/?page_id=24) has a small amount of international stuff on the menu but is generally very much what you describe and damn good with it.

I had liver, onions, gravy, and mash there a couple of months ago... and tried the faggotts - all was amazing, and only a tenner between 12 and 14:30 (a tenner can seem a lot, but the quality is second to none)

the Brewhouse is used to big crowds, there was about 20 in there when I went before christmas - they got their stuff on time but mine was a bit delayed. It's got the "Archers" Gold (Pooley's Golden) 4.7% of heaven so 5 noms from me.

Indeed it is and me and the missus will be there next Saturday to celebrate her birthday, which is why I won't be at Leicester. It has to be said Antony and Alyson who own and run the Weighbridge also own and run the Three Crowns at Brinkworth.

Need to book to be sure of a seat. Can be noisy due to the acoustics so try to get the quiet upper level.

I've lived in China for nearly six years now.  I go through stages of craving various English food.  I've tried my hand at successfully making from scratch good sausage rolls, crumpets and various other roasted kind of meals.  The two things I miss like crazy are a full English breakfast and fish and chips.  I have only been back to blighty twice in my time here and have to say its pretty easy to get a good full English but fish and chips has seriously gone down hill in the time I have been away.  Now it could be that my expectations have increased but even York road chippy which was amazing when I left just didn't cut the mustard over the summer when I was last back.

agreed, could never find a chippy in swindon that was really good. best I've had is from laughing halibut in Westminster but there must be better somewhere??

I recommend the Fat Dog for a slightly cheaper meal than the Brewhouse I've yet to try the Brewhouse, it looks good.

Also never realised Leefer was that, um, mature :)
------
On topic, never been a fan of that kind food Leefer so my opinion is open a Nandos instead.

I tried Simms just after they won an award. Thought they were very average. I know there must be a few about around here somewhere but loved it in Australia where you selected your fish and they cooked it fresh for you (the only one I've been to here is at Lizard, though you didn't get a choice it was freshly cooked local catch

I live so far from the sea here and all the locals eat bottom feeding river fish, not goo for fish and chips.  In fact not good for anything,

I like good food and had a menu put through my door for that place. I was desperate to go and was then told by 2 separate people the food was bad and over priced. I take it this is not the case then?

I liked it, went a little while ago (a year).  When we went the food was definitely not bad, in fact it was good.
But I've only been once, so maybe we got lucky?

Will agree it was not cheap, but its not Brewhouse expensive.

Was just looking at tripadvisor reviews for both places.

They both have reviews that range from terrible to excellent. About as helpful as buying Stephen Hawking a pair of roller-skates.

Trip advisor is a pile of shite.  User reviews, no quality control and no checking if the reviews are actually real.  Basically anyone can slag anyone off on trip advisor.
