Beano back on the radar

PAOLO Di Canio could be set to resurrect his interest in Oxford United striker James Constable, the Advertiser understands.

Personally can't see why we need him. Benson and Connell look good, Murray has a chance of becoming good but is a little inconsistent. But I guess Kerouche is gone and the jury is out on Magera being able to cope physically at this level in a strikers role.

So actually I have talked myself into thinking perhaps we do need another striker. But are Constable and Benson too similar? From the little I've seen Benson is the better prospect to play at a higher level.

The important part of the article is "sources close to the player". I will Believe that when the club officially confirm that we have made a concrete offer or an official inquiry.

Some of you take your prejudices to seriously. If Paolo thinks he's worth pursuing then I'm right behind him in doing so, after all we're hardly going to sign any player just to do a "Duncan" on Oxford or any perceived threat, we we all know their best hope is the play offs.

Any player the club bring in regardless of who they are or where they come from is going to come in to play a part in our ultimate goal of promotion at the first time of asking. I'm all for that ladles & jellyspoons.

No thanks.  Played for both my football foes, league and non-league.....little Oxford and the mighty chippenham.  Chippenham being the non-league side for those who weren't sure.   :)

He kissed the scums badge which I agree is not good.  But if he comes and scores regularly and gets the winner against the scum all will be forgiven!

Although I can't see why we need yet another striker, I'd have him here.

I would too, as long as he apologises for kissing the scum badge, because he knows he did wrong.

I can see why PdC may be interested because he is EXACTLY what we are missing up front which Benson, Murray, Kerrouche and Magera dont give us but what Clarke did offer us, a big presence up front that can win the ball on the ground and in the air, the big target man. Benson is a better prospect to play at a higher level I agree but we arent at that higher level yet and C*ntstable is just what we need to get us to that higher level.

But I do agree that its his agent pushing for a move, stating that we are interested so that he may be able to get a better deal for him at the Pox.

Surprises me. Hasn't been prolific this season. 9 goals in 27 games. While Connell who has been coming off the bench and played less has 7 goals in 25? McLeod's record and Grabbans record is a striker I want to see us buying not scummy Constable. Especially after he kissed "that" badge.

Not bothered about the badge kissing, many players do that now and it means nothing. Would be worth it just to see the reaction of the Oxford fans - would drive them up the wall.

From a footballing point of view his record is decent, and Paolo certainly seems to rate him. Were Murray to go back to Ipswich another striker wouldn't hurt.

Eh?

Quote
It would be unbearable were he to go there, on so many levels. Please don't let this happen.

Quote
As much as I would hate him to go, I would be fine with it As long as it was the right amount of money and NOT Swindon.

Quote
Regardless of who the player is, we should never, EVER, sell a player to that lot.

In my opinion selling Constable, our top scorer for the past three seasons, would show that the club either has no ambition or we are struggling financially. We should hold onto to Constable in my opinion.

As for Swindon, they can **** off.

Quote
If Constable is sold, id be pretty gutted, but would understand why if it was a decent offer.

If Constable is sold to Swindon, I would never buy a season ticket again.

Quote
Agree, and as I have said before I would question the ability of the board if they sell to Swindon. If Constable is sold then fair enough if he goes on to bigger and better things and we get a good price but to that lot? Not now, not ever.

That's just the first page

If Sky are right in what they are saying this afternoon "Constable asked to talk to Swindon after a second bid received" then I think this is totally different to Joey Scumbag

He kissed the badge - that really pissed everyone off - however if he were to come and apologise for that then as far as I am concerned it's water under the bridge - if he scores goals for us, and Poxford are worse off for it, then I am all in !!!

They'll get £350,000 max for Tubbs.

Wouldn't go for either Tubbs or Constable though, would rather Grabban or McLeod.

Rivalry aside, I'm beginning to warm to the thought of signing Constable now.

And 9 goals with half-ish the season gone. 18 goals is not a bad tally at all for a player that adds more than just goals.

Dreamland, surely? He'll be 28 by the end of the season and a higher league team signing him is always going to be a risk, what with no experience in the league above and just half a season (so far) and a failed loan spell's football league experience under his belt. If Crawley have to sell players, then potential suitors should be looking at Tyrone Barnett, a much better player with far more potential.

I'd rather Grabban too, but Kee would be first choice for me. Constable would be another Connell - similar age, similar type of player. Both probably not going to pull up trees in L1. Benson looks like the player we have been missing, sharp, quick, intelligent.

Grabban impressed me earlier in the season, apart from he never stopped moaning at the ref.

6 of Mcleods goals have come from the penalty spot, but regardless his record this season is still good for a team near the bottom

I had a quick look around at the strikers named in this thread, working out goals per game average at Conference level and above (yes I am sad and bored)

Tubbs    215 games 112 goals - 1 goal every 1.9 games, aged 27
Constable 231 games 93 goals - 1 goal every 2.4 games, aged 27
McLeod    258 games 92 goals - 1 goal every 2.8 games, aged 27
Kee         99 games 30 goals - 1 goal every 3.3 games, aged 21
Connell   278 games 72 goals - 1 goal every 3.8 games, aged 28
Grabban   140 games 30 goals - 1 goal every 4.6 games, aged 24

Grabban and Kee have age on their side compaired to the others but the thing with Constable is that hes a very different player to all the others listed here and also very different from what we already have.

Hes a tall bustling muscular target man, Connell, Magera, De Vita, Murray, Kerrouche and Benson aren't that and that is obviously exactly what PdC wants.

Only the 10 games he played while at Palarse were in the Championship, the rest were at 1st div level and below like the rest of the players on that list who have all with the exeception of Tubbs played in the 1st Division.

And yes he did start as a winger and TBH thats probably his best position, a goal scoring winger, hes certainly not a target man which PdC is obviously after.

The fees being talked about seem ridiculous for someone of his age who's played virtually all of his career in non-league, and would be at best a gamble in building for League 1 success.

Didn't we have a chance to sign him but declined to follow-up before he went to Walsall?

Now, Leven would be a different matter entirely - there must be some strange reason why he went to Oxford in the first place, as he's clearly too good for League 2, so I'd be very surprised if we could pull that one off.

There's a lot of bullshit in this thread.

1. Constable won't leave us for a L2 side. He'd only move up a league.
2. He is a good player for L2.
3. I think Tubbs is off to B'mouth?
4. I rate Billy Kee, decent player.
5. Constable is not particularly tall or a target man. He's 6ft, a grafter. Runs and fights all day. Touch of an absolute rapist so pumping balls up to him won't get you very far, doesn't win much in the air outside the box.
6. I wouldn't be confident that Constable would be a good L1 player, I don't think he's good enough technically. But there's also no way I want him to leave, and I want to see if he's good enough in L1 with us.
7. He hasn't said that he wanted to talk to you. That re-tweet sums it up nicely.

I was expecting a "I'm not leaving Oxford" message shortly after the retweet. I suppose if the clubs are talking then Oxford are willing to sell and therefore why would you want to stay at a club who could be willing to...

1. Sell you to a major rival.

2. Sell you to a same division promotion contender.

It would be good if he said he wanted to talk to us, did so and Jeremy and PdC said "only joking you badge kissing Scum cunt now go back to your 3 sided monument to excrement and explain to those retarded yellow pisstained wastes of skin why you wanted to sign for the mighty Swindon who you support but fucked up the arse back in August".

and I want to see if he's good enough in L1 with us.

Is he planning on playing into his 40s then?

Seems to me he has a lack of ambition if that tweet was a true reflection of his feelings.

Wahey! Good one. Not a lack of ambition at all, in fact its almost a statement of ambition. He wants to go up a league or stay here and go up.

No no. He hasn't said that he doesn't want to.

You're a League 2 side, no? Then he won't be joining you, and he's said that he doesn't want to.

Make your mind up, first you say he wants to go up a league, then you say he wants to stay at Oxford.

Having an Oxford player come out and say,
"Let me talk to Swindon"

Is brilliant.

Whether it's true or not, that's made my day.

Now for Leven please Paolo.

Failing that, how much mischief can the TEF work on rumour sites?

Make your mind up, first you say he wants to go up a league, then you say he wants to stay at Oxford.

It was a simple statement, try reading it again?

"He wants to go up a league or stay here and go up."

He'd go up a league to the right offer, remember that a potential move to Bournemouth fell through even after agreeing a contract.

If you offered enough money for Constable then our board would probably do a deal because we can't turn down big offers. But seeing as your club made it so public that they turned down a £500k offer for Ritchie, its going to take something significant.

Its quite clear, try reading it again. If he stays with you he won't be going up will he. HTH.

IMO you can keep him.  I think he would only be good to help us get up next season, as he isn't good enough for L1.  On that basis, we will go up without him.

Makes me laugh to see him disrupt your non league camp  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

But seeing as your club made it so public that they turned down a £500k offer for Ritchie,

It was Bournemouth that made the Ritchie bid public on their website, not our board.

And surely Ritchie is worth substantial multiples of Constable's value, Ritchie having proved himself to be a star at this level and only 22 years old compared with a 27 y.o. journeyman who's been reasonably succesful in pub leagues.

I didn't know it was Bournemouth who went to press, fair enough.

Ritchie is of course worth more than Constable. But if we know that you're in a position to reject £500k bids (we are not) for any player, then we're going to ask a fair whack from you for our main striker.

Wouldn't you like Deane Smalley instead? He scored loads for Chesterfield last season. You could have him for £100k.

Why is it that, now we're playing on the bottom rung of the League, we're suddenly a 'buying club' and need a squad of 300 players?  And how are we able to afford it anyway?

I'm tired.

Likewise if we'd accepted £500K for any player then prices would escalate as other clubs would expect us to be spending a chunk of the proceeds!

The money that's being talked about for Constable is ridiculous to my mind, though I can't blame Oxford for wanting to up the price as much as poss.  It would be a difficult one for them to turn down I would have thought (IF the quoted amounts are in the right ballpark) as there can't be many clubs queueing up to buy him at that price.

James Constable @JamesConstable9 Close
To clear up the rumours, "I have never asked to speak to Swindon" so don't know where that has come from! No truth what so ever!

Again interesting though - he tweets "I have never asked to talk to Swindon" rather than "I don't WANT to talk to Swindon and I don't WANT to move to Swindon" - MASSIVE difference !!

Once again had the chance to clean the slate - however chose to swerve it !!

But there's no need for him to say anything really.  Surely best all around would be to keep totally quiet, but I guess in the twatter age that's impossible for most footballers.

Not sure if Constable would do the biz for us in a higher league, and after 2 bids rejected would prefer we moved on and tried somewhere else!

He wasn't necessarily top of the list in the first place though. I don't know nuffin', just pointing out for all we know he might be last on our shortlist.

So sensitive over what is really nothing but a hypothetical move at the moment. Imagine if we really did take a player of theirs, the meltdown would be a glorious thing.
