Title: Luke Rooney
Post by: LittleRed on Sunday, January 8, 2012, 22:54:37
Anybody know what has happened with our bid for him. Surely it's a yes or no, I'd take that no news mean they are seriously considering it. Seems like a six figure sum is welcomed by most Gillinghan fans as although they rate him as a good prospect believe this is too good n offer to turn down. They value him at 50-75k not that means much of course. Anyone seen this guy play?

I thought someone had posted on here that the bid had been turned down.

However, I haven't seen anything official.

There was also a rumour that it was a cash plus player (don't know who, but could be Esajas or even Kerrouche), so if that was true it could be that they are discussing terms with that player.

He played at CG and did well as did their whole team until Matt Ritchie killed them  off - seem to remember him cutting in and hitting our post too, good player worth having IMHO.

Gills need money to buy Kuffour off Rovers so selling for a fee would make sense for them.

Gills fans don't rate him very highly at all. Most would snatch the 100k+ offer I think. I know Paolo isn't one to judge a player on only one game, but we seem to rate him very very highly?

He sounds like Ritchie - which isn't a bad thing. I'm sure working for his idol would help him buck up his ideas.

Then why is Ritchie attracting 500k+ bids, and Rooney not?

Then why is Ritchie attracting 500k+ bids, and Rooney not?

Because he's obviously not as good as Ritchie. Maybe working for Paolo and seeing how Ritchie does it will help him develop and realise the potential that Gillingham fans do say he has.

Slight fly in the ointment is that he came on Saturday as a sub for the Gills and is therefore ineligable, should we sign him, for Leicester.

Contracts also change value - Rooney's is almost up and so his cash value has collapsed. The fee we might pay is for the desperation to get him now, not in the summer.

He started against Bournemouth in an earlier round so he was ineligable already

Before his new contract rejection, gills fans rates Rooney very very highly, but they went all sour grapes and said he isn't that good, and their opinion got even worse when we registered our interest. He is a good player there's no doubt about that.

He's a youngster though...meaning he will not go completely for free if he sees out his current contract.  So they have a slightly stronger bargaining position than if he were a little older.

If it has gone quiet and he came on as a sub on Sat then I suspect the offer has been turned down, you don't play him if he is considering an offer

Football club bids for player SHOCKER

Indeed, though I doubt I'd have been delighted if it was us with Ritchie and it was made public the day before the FA Cup game.

That said, they haven't been playing him. So it wasn't exactly key for them.

If the pikeys did cup tie him on purpose then his value has gone down rather than up.

On reflection my comment was a bit silly. And yes he was already cup tied.

It's not as though any bid would have unsettled him.

Surely to be unsettled, one must be settled in the first place.

It'll all be down to Rooney. If hw wants to stay at Gills and they offer what he sees as acceptable then he will stay but I guess if they dont then he'll push for a move and force Gillingham's hand. Can't remember where I read it but read last week that Rooney thinks Gills have messed him around a fair bit so he might be keen on a move.

Title: Re: Luke Rooney

The thing is we have made an official bid, so it's not just a case of us saying we wouldn't mind signing him.

It's no different than Bournemouth making bids for Rithcie, if the Pikey's don't want to sell him they can just turn down the bid.

The fact that he can leave at the end of the season just impacts how much they can get for him, as a tribunal is always a bit of a lottery. Although with all the lucky heather they have maybe they think that's the best option.

I read the report that Hess was angry about the Town's bid being made public & not the way football club's should do things.  Fine except that he's also quoted about wanting to sign Kuffour & not sure whether Buckle's sacking will affect this.  But isn't Kuffour contracted to another team & isn't that making it plain they want to sign him?

I think we shouldn't bother bidding for him again to be honest. Apparently he's going to be there till the end of the season now anyway. We may as well see what Bodin can do out wide for us. He was decent down at Torquay and from what Gills fans say about Rooney I very much doubt he'd be any better than Bodin.

Personally, I was very impressed with Rooney when I saw him play for the Gills at the CG earlier on this season. He was the main inspirational player in midfield for them & looked to be causing us problems until two late 'wonder goals' from Ritchie & Smith settled it.  In fact, I was impressed with the team generally - in my view the best side I have seen at the CG this season. Think they will be there or thereabouts come season's end.
Given that Rooney is only 21 & he's going to get better then provided he stays levelheaded then he could have a very good future in the game - love it to be in the red shirt of Swindon Town.

Gills fans thoughts here - http://fansonline.net/gillingham/mb/view.php?id=153544

A little concerned about this 'Can't see him ever evolving any further here. Saturday was classic Rooney, created a great chance for Shrewsbury with his first touch (attempting to be too clever in his own half), and then created our first shot of note about 5 mins later.

Too inconsistent to be anything other than an impact sub'

Good thing is that he is young and hopefully hungry to do well.

According to our official site Gabilondo is joiny 2nd in the assists table

Ritchie is top 7 league 3 cup

Then De Vita with 4 league 0 cup joint with Gabby 2 league 2 cup

Kerrouche, Caddis, Ferry & MAGERA with 3.

Kennedy, Ridenhalgh, Connell and Smith on 2

Alan Mac, Comazzi, Easyjet and Murray with 1 each.

We've been after this guy for ages so I'm not concerned by the suggestion that he's a replacement for anyone.

I hope we're not paying over the odds for him.

I know whats been said by Paolo and Matt but hope Rooneys signing isn't to soften the blow of Ritchies departure.
That's the problem supporting Swindon, always waiting for the bad news. Sounds like a good signing so I'll stay positive for now.
Difference now is we would have already sold Ritchie and then replaced him with a panic buy at the end of the transfer window.

I wouldn't totally write off Gillingham's criticisms. He's young with inconsistencies in his game and can be reckless.

But Gillingham know that there's talent there because they wanted to keep him at their club. Hopefully it will be Swindon Town that can get the best out of him because time is on his side.

...and yes, if Rooney rejects Swindon then the Gills lot will be changing their opinions much like what we read on Constable Thursday.

Looking at the Gills blog that was posted earlier, this looks like a buy with the future in mind rather than one to make our season this time around.  Seems like he's not really established himself as a 1st team regular at Gills and has a lot to learn so guess we're buying for his potential.
Winger wasn't a position that Paolo mentioned last week when saying about the positions he needed to fill during the transfer window so I'm still expecting another 3 in before the next 2 weeks are up.

I think it's the complete opposite now for loan players, to avoid any allegations of throwing a match they're not allowed to face their parent club.

Not sure about permanent signings but would be very surprised if we'd agree with it anyway.

I haven't been to many games this season but did go to the Gillingham game and Rooney was very impressive, caused us lots of problems. Played on the right if I remember correctly but Di Canio seems to like playing his wingers on the wrong side so they can cut in, no doubt he will be challenging De Vita for a place in the side. Also think he may be used just behind the front two, will certainly give us another good attacking option and with all the games we have coming up we need plenty of them.

However Jutkiewicz will not play against his old club after Mowbray made a gentleman’s agreement with City boss Andy Thorn not to play his new signing.

Ritchie will stay, unless Portsmouth or West Ham bid silly money for him. Can't see him going to Bournemouth.

Constable and Ross Allen in please - Leon Clarke and Mehdi Kerrouche out.

Hope Paolo jettisons Risser, Esajas and the other foreign flops - will help ease the wage bill for one and get us in some extra cash.'

The football league no longer allow a clause put into contracts to stop permanently transferred players playing against their former club. Yes, it happened with Roberts, but the ruling has been altered since.

Its a different story with loan players though. Adebayor won't be lining up against City later this month.

I think he played all across midfield that night and looked a very good and versatile player. Let's face it they were a very good side, and he was their best player. And Di Canio will find his best postion and make him even better. An exciting signing for exciting times.

With the recent signings we have made I am confident Rooney will do well. Having never seen Benson play he seems a real gem and Wes so my expectations have certainly gone up since Atiku.

I don't know enough about Rooney to form any opinion other than that I hope he does whatever PDC sees in him well.

I can only assume that PDC saw the ability for Lanzano to make a cracking cup of tea because he was a shit keeper.

He's certainly graduated from the Billy Bodin School of Obviously.

"Obviously I'm happy to be here and obviously will look to obviously to well while obviously hoping to become a fans favourite".

From Sky...

Luke Rooney has defended the manner of his departure from Gillingham and insists he left on good terms with manager Andy Hessenthaler.

The winger, 21, completed a move to Swindon on Tuesday for an undisclosed fee, coming after he turned down the offer of a new deal at Priestfield in November. Hessenthaler subsequently omitted Rooney from first-team affairs although he did go on to make three substitute appearances more recently.

"I could not have left on any better terms, in my eyes anyway," he said. "I'm sure my gaffer at Gillingham will have an interview and I'm sure he's not going to lie to my face, he'll tell everyone who needs or wants to know that I've gone with his blessing.

"My attitude has been great ever since everything that's been going on and all I've wanted to do is play my football and enjoy my football and I'm just glad, after all of that, that I can do that. I cannot get my point across. You get people who are so naive they believe everything they read and I cannot have my say because, if I do, I've got to be careful with what I say and I'm not going to say too much about that because it's gone.

"But I think if any Gillingham fan wants to read stuff that's not true then that's up to them and any Gillingham fan who believes I've done anything wrong, go and ask the manager. One, have I done anything wrong? And two, have I left on good terms? He'll tell you he's got a lot of time for me and I've gone with his blessing.

"That should clear it up for anyone. They should believe their manager rather than any local paper. It's gone now, I've perhaps had my say there."

I wasn't confused but I am now.

Didn't fellow ex-Jill (and ex-Swindon all round nice guy) Iffy Onuora have one as well?  On his day, I thought he was a 'great footballer' (even though he wasn't great in the Glenn Hoddle/Don Rogers sense).

I'm going to do some more work now.

Probably very few...maybe Socrates.  The Scum had a Kiwi Dr Ceri Evans, who turned out for them, whilst he was at Scumbag University, doing some research.

Dave Bamber had a degree, but did a very good job of covering it up by appearing as pig thick as the average player, think that it's necessary to avoid getting the nickname Prof.  Bamber was lucky in that Dave Hockaday already had that moniker, think he might have had an O Level or something

Didn't do the scummer much good when Chalkie bagged a couple in a nice 3-0 win at the CG in 89, when he was at the heart of the scum defence.
