Title: An Evening With Henry Olonga, Friday 2nd December 7.45pm
Post by: dphunt88 on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 18:02:35
"The extraordinary story of the cricketer who risked his life in the name of freedom"

My cricket club, Swindon United Churches, present an evening with ex-Zimbabwe fast bowler Henry Olonga. He is most famous for wearing a black armband (along with current England head coach Andy Flower) to commemorate the death of Zimbabwean democracy at the 2003 Cricket World Cup. The venue is Gateway Church, Westlea, SN5 7AR - a 300 seat venue.

Admission by Ticket - Priced £5.50 in advance - £6.50 on the door

Tickets available from: The event venue (day); Christchurch Office, 36 Cricklade Street (day); El Toro Restaurant, 6 Devizes Road (lunch, evening); Earles Newsagent, 35-36 Newport Street (7am-9pm).

You can also purchase tickets by phone on 01793 700618, 01793 770331 or 07788437526.

Henry was the guest speaker at our end of season awards night on Saturday and I can vouch for the fact that he's a very good and engaging speaker. If you fancy it, thanks for supporting my club.

Yes, he's still our very hard working club secretary and the man organising this event! His son is one of my housemates.

How do you know him?

He used to coach me when I was younger. I went to school with Rich.

spot on. if you go, you'll hear all about what it's like to go toe to toe with Mugabe! Henry now lives in London with his wife and children.

Are you from Purton then? Do you still play cricket? If any of Dave's batting coaching rubbed off on you then i'm guessing not... haha!

Yep, I'm from Purton. I don't play any more, probably should do.

Dave used to teach me to cover drive using tennis balls balanced on toilet roll tubes :)

He is a very decent opera singer too.  He often does a song each year at the Lashings events when they tour.  A lovely chap.
