Title: mattia lanzano
Post by: corner on Thursday, September 15, 2011, 20:03:13
named in team of the week. I know he hasnt had that much to do yet and started off a bit nervey and his distribution wasnt that great, but has got better and grown in confidence since. He has made a couple of good saves not played to much so can only get better. It would be nice to have a good quality solid No.1 for a few years......

Made everything look very simple at Crawley, normally the sign of a good keeper.

How about a song for him? My rubbish effort:

To the tune of Transmission by Joy Division

Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt
Mattia Lanzano

Even our fans couldn't clap-ruin Joy Division could they?

I think it's fair to say the Town End will settle on a rather simple number, such as "Italy's" or, "It'lys" number one... once it's generally acknowledged that he's Italian.

All adds to the excitement, he's kept two clean sheets in three games. We have to wonder wether Smith would have managed the same feat?

Much too early to judge yet, made a good save the other day, also has a touch of the Grobbelaar about him (the wandering bit, not the match fixing bit).

No idea if ultimately he is better or worse than Phil Smith, but he's not let himself down yet.

Di Canios post match interview suggests he may be dropped, but to be honest that will do much more harm than good. Dropping him would shoot his confidence to bits, and yes I was furious at the mistake he made, but thats foootball and we are in league two, these things happen.

I've thought since the Rotherham game though that it wasn't going to be long before a Lanzano fuck up was going to cost us a goal.

Title: Re: mattia lanzano
Post by: phelpsieboy on Saturday, September 17, 2011, 19:57:01
He's just very eccentric in the way he plays, and is very different to your generic league two "insert brute name" goalkeeper, brings a bit of flair about to his goalkeeping and plays more as a sweepers sometimes too rather than a goalkeeper, whether it works in our favour though is a different matter

If we had won 5-2 we would be laughing it off, just shows how crucial role a goalkeeper is.

I prefer him to Smith but a few more blunders on this scale will have us all scratching our heads.

Yes, he did fuck up, but the bigger question was what happened to the team after this cock up?  The team went to pieces.  It is the team's heart that should be questioned.  Instead of collapsing they should be outting in more effort and fighting for the team.

Now dropping Lozano will be a disaster.  We will be back to last season's goalkeeping situation where one week it was Smith and the next week it is Lucas.  We need to decide who the best keeper is and stick by him, unless he is a crock of shit.

Bollox - Smith has had his day and is bloody lucky to be no 2 at Town. Lanzano is a young lad. I know which one I'd take as keeper now and which one I think will develop. Lanzano may need to curb his eccenticity but at least he's not a fucking jelly quivering on his line.

Title: Re: mattia lanzano
Post by: DiV on Sunday, September 18, 2011, 06:53:56
I dont think goal keepers ever curb their eccentricity.

I've not seen the error and only seen Lanzano play once, definitely worth sticking with for now - chopping and changing goal keeper is never a good idea.

He'll make errors, he's a league two keeper - they all will.

If he continues to make fuck up after fuck up - then you either give Scott a go or look for a new keeper in January.

He's also, what, 20? I missed it as I was still attempting to get food, but as has been pointed out, it happens to every keeper. He will learn from it and move on. Only Me makes a good point, but I would argue that we looked toothless as soon as they scored their first, like the sucker-punch winded us.

Post by: Summerof69 on Sunday, September 18, 2011, 14:38:08
I'm with the Wolfsburg manager who fines his players for un-necessary backpasses. At the end of the day goalkeepers are in goal to save shots from the opposition not to boot it up field as the defender cannot be arsed to because goalies are normally crap outfield players, so expect their kicks to go wrong occasionally. Defenders should boot the ball up the field themselves or kick it into touch.

More questions need to be asked as to how we remained scoreless than one mans mistake.

Everybody who sits next to me at the CG, knows I've been going on about this for years. It's the defences job to clear the ball ... don't pass the buck to the keeper. I still have nightmares about Nicky Hammond's miss-kick at Peterborough after all these years.

As others have said there's little point dropping Lanzano for one error as we'll inveitably drop Smith the following week.

Burton had Kevin Poole on the bench. I think I'd prefer to see him in goal than Smith.

Kennedy has played very well, he's better than Cibochi. Better performances than Rose or Sheehan last year. He's going to make it as a league player and we would be mad to bin him now. He is good enough now, and if he keeps playing he will get better.

The goalkeeper position always was a big question mark this season.

Depends whether PDC has taken into consideration the supposed versatility of Risser and Cibbochi who have had limited outings at CB but may be considered enough as cover.

Before Smith was dropped for making a couple of errors everyone was singing his praises and said he should be given a fair go he makes a couple of mistakes Lanzano get's put in he's back to being shit and public enemy number 1, give him a break.

I think Lanzano should be given a chance to redeem himself if the school boy mistake he made has knocked his confidence then Smith should be given the shirt back.

Smith (and Lanzano) are lower league keepers so unfortunetly we will have to put up with the odd mistake or 2 from them but they don't need their own fan's calling them crap as that really help's their confidence they are the best we are going to get at the moment and need support from the fans.

Nice to see Paolo admitting to a few of his mistakes. He is, after all, still learning.

I think because of his age, even if he is out of contract in the summer we would have to pay something to Crystal Palace for him.

If we do plan on bidding for him it makes a lot more sense to put in a nominal bid in January to try and get him signed long term.

If we leave it until the Summer he could have more appealing options than us, including Palace themselves.

I think confidence was always his biggest issue, or should I say fear of failure? (or are they the same thing?!?)

He was a big strong lad, pretty athletic but he made Phil Smith look decisive with his decision making and mobility on crosses. I honestly got the impression that every time he came for a cross he was thinking "I really really really hope I don't fuck this up"

Shame, but maybe free's up a bit of wages for further improvements. Foderingham has proved what we've been missing for a long, long time, so hopefully the scouting team are watching a few possible replacement keepers for January/Summer.

Yep, and he's in the starting 11 on Saturday.  :D

I think it'll only been a matter of time though.

How strange for adver/bbc to report a story that never was?

Lanzano was no worse than Smith but both are shitloads worse than Wes who looks a proper goalkeeper. There was always the chance that Lanzano would get better but Smith will always be shit. Picking between the two of them is like choosing which STD you'd want.

The only shit around must be in your eyes if you think Lanzano's as good as Smiffy.
Smith isn't as good as Foderingham, that's obvious, but compared to Lanzano he's Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton and Peter Schmeichel all rolled into one.

Smith makes one or two mistakes a game (Some which prove costly) Lanzano was a liability whenever the ball came near him.

Can someone actually confirm what is happening with Lanzano?

The club on their FB page say he hasn't had his contract ripped up, whilst the adver persist with the story he has and includes quotes from PDC to that effect. Is it a case of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing?

As I understand it they will maintain his contract until January but allow him to return to Italy to allow him time to find a new club.

Good luck to him, he never looked like he will ever make a pro keeper though.

Perhaps he was given the opportunity to find a new club on loan by yesterday's deadline or paperwork didnt complete in time so he couldnt move to anyone else...whpo knows I'm sure it will be clarified RS usually do the digging

Yes, confirmed as so.  Seems odd they didn't wait a bit longer since he was only transfer listed a couple of days ago?

Hopefully we aren't wasting money on another reserve keeper, unless he left without a pay-off.

I think we would have brought in a new back up 'keeper regardless of Lanzano being here or not, expect that is next on the list.

Our continental flavour is disappearing! We're down to 2 Italians, a Namibian, an Irishman and a faux-Irishman.

James Rae who's on the ground staff is not a bad keeper. Was playing for Supermarine at the begining of last season. He can step in

They never said "We won't sign him", just "We're not signing him". Which is very different i.e. they didn't say never, just not now. Seemed very carefully worded to leave the option open, say 6 months down the line

Yes it did, and I think taking him to Italy - if he goes- would show intent. Unfortunately. But best not open that can of worms.
