Title: Antivirus/Antispam/Firewall etc etc
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Friday, August 12, 2011, 18:50:00
Had Zone Alarm for years but latest upgrade has killed my 6535 days of remaining subscription!  So, question is:

- Does anyone have a key for ZA Extreme Security 10.0.250 (or anything else) that works with XP?

- If not, can I have a recommendation for what I should go for next - Bearing in mind that I am running XP?

- Is free stuff any good? If so, which should I go for?

If you have a router, the firewall in that should be more than enough. I can't be arsed with software firewalls now a days. Microsoft Security Essentials nice lightweight AV, and Malwarebytes for anything more serious. All FREE

Dont fancy going without a firewall. Might just download the free Zonealarm firewall and free version of AVG.

Just found that wifey has paid for McAffee on her laptop! Reading reviews, it says that its for 1 pc. Can they tell? If I install it on my pc will it bomb out?

I have exactly the same setup here and don't have any problems.  As long as you are sensible you don't need anything else.  Most of the stuff you pay for is just way over the top and slows your PC down.

People still use software firewalls? Why?

Server with static (internet facing) IP Address and a router that doesn't firewall except when NAT is used, that was my reason. Long since gone.

The only reason I use one is to stop dodgy software from connecting up to activation servers.

You can do that with a host file entry:

172.0.0.1          www.dodgysoftware.com

etc

Not as computer savvy as you lot obviously.

So are you all saying there is no need for a firewall like Zone Alarm?

Yeah, as long as your router has a firewall (and you trust it).

Should I trust the router that Sky gave me?

Why not? What are the chances of a communication device supplied by News Corporation being hacked?
