Title: Car Trouble.
Post by: herthab on Sunday, August 7, 2011, 10:31:11
My car fucked up on the way back from the game yesterday. The brakes are making a grinding noise and there's a similar noise (Although not as bad) when I'm driving. The thing is, no warning lights are showing on the dash.

Any ideas?

The brake pads are probably worn through.

I can understand your puzzlement Si, but when it comes to cars (Or basically anything that is of a slightly practical nature) I'm a bit of a fuckwit.

tbf, I did think it was probably the pads/shoes, but the lack of a warning light threw me a bit.

It was more that it was 'one of those' threads which you famously detest :)

No. The threads I detest are ones like "How do I get cat hair out of a carpet?" or "Where can I buy a travel adaptor?".

This is a much more interesting, manly thread.

Obviously you need to replace the flux capacitor.

On a slightly related note, my brakes squeek when I brake. This just means I need the pads changing yes?

Sometimes it is just the dry hot weather that makes them squeek, check with someone they need changing rather than automatically assume they do.

Cheers. They've been like that for a while, and the brakes were pointed out as a possible concern when I got my MOT done last october, so I don't think the heat excuse is going to fly! Got fluid done last week too

More than likely caused by dust,This good downpour of rain should it out.

Often squeaking brakes is caused by air passing between the pads and caliper housing. This is due to dry weather as leefer says or long service schedules/high mileage. I have a new car that has always done it and a mate has exactly the same car, same age that has always done it, nothing wrong just annoying.

If it is your break pads get them done ASAP else you'll have to replace the discs too
