Title: Designated pubs in Swindon for away fans
Post by: oakleigh2010 on Monday, August 1, 2011, 18:36:26
Can we please have a blanket boycott of any pub which agrees to host away fans exclusively for matches at the CG. Why not mix?

Seriously? Letting pubs have Swindon/Oxford together just wouldn't happen anymore.

Send them to the Cricketers. close to the station and plenty of back door action to keep the boys happy.

They can also go to The Mail Coach if they want to go into the town centre. You have to enter through the rear at that pub, apparently...

Not any more, it hasn't been a gay pub for a while.
I went in there a few months ago while on a crawl.

I'll probably frequent the Tap And Barrel before the Crewe game.

One of the key points argued when talk of moving out of Town is considered, is loss to the local economy, it's good that plenty of O*ford fans are coming...Town centre needs the money.

O*ford's ground is stuck out in the arse end of nowhere, precisely because the city doesn't want it in the centre.

So the usual became a not possible for the Oxford match - that is a joke - why should Oxford have any pub at all? They have their own bar in the ground!!

How can the police have the power to decide something like that anyway? Surely the landlord has the final say?

The Merlin used to be called 'The Oxford' after all. Never Been a fan. Tap and Barrell for me, but I can't see them opening it on the morning of the derby.

I still don't believe you DRS.

This has to be a wind up.

Its not.

The Merlin has technically always been an away fans pub.  The only reason this hasn't really been monitored to date is that we have few fixtures as high profile as Oxford.

Title: Re: Designated pubs in Swindon for away fans
Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, 08:19:28
It used to be a Morrell's pub, hence the 'Oxford'.  I understand why people go there, given how close it is to the ground.  But there are much better pubs if you're prepared to walk a little further.

Dont know why some are getting annoyed about the merlin being Oxford only? Let's be honest it's going to be full of them either way so why would you want to drink there anyway? I wasn't planning on it. It'll have to be the CGH or the Legends with possibly a cheeky few in Town beforehand.

The Merlin has always been an away pub Ralph. I think a few have already pointed that out. Sure they let home fans in but how often do you drink there when the likes of Leeds, Rovers or Saints are in Town? It's so packed and annoying I never bother. It would be a disaster to have both sets of fans for this game drinking in there. Just my opinion though. It's common sense the way I see it. We have the CGH they have The Merlin. Simple.

The Oxford fans have got to go somewhere and I have heard that the town centre pubs will be shut (not confirmed though).  The Merlin would be the logical place.

On Saturday I also heard the Tap and Barrel is open from 10.  Well, when I say 'open', the doors will be locked and they'll be letting in regulars/friends of regulars.

The CGH is open from 10 also, obviously only for Town supporters.  Not sure whether the garden will be open though and if it's gonna be as hot as this, the CGH is the last place you'd want to be locked inside.  It's like a sauna.

Oh yeah and to the Crewe fan, you'll be fine pretty much wherever you drink as Swindon have no beef with Crewe.  Possibly a good idea to avoid the County Ground Hotel but other than that there are loads of the pubs in the town centre which is only a 10/15 minute walk from the CG.

Why would places open at 10? I thought the whole point of moving it to a Sunday was to stop people drinking so much? Then the just go and open up 3 hours before kick off anyway?!?!? I don't disbelieve you  it just sounds crazy.

I can tolerate all Sw*nd*n fans, they are of no threat.
Can anybody provide evidence of our fans 'giving it the biggun' on their forums? I'm not saying there hasn't been, but i've not seen any. Not looked too hard mind.
A certain song about Martin Aldridge was put on our forum the other day! Who's giving it the 'biggun' anyway?

The dick waving stuff between the knuckle dragging fans of our clubs, about who took where and who ran who, doesn't really impress on here Archie.

No, they'll all claim they were in the Town End like they have been every year we've played them after a few pints in the CGH

Simply pointing out it's isn't a claim it is indeed fact, it doesn't impress me, but it is indeed fact.

They are no threat to me, I don't go to football for trouble so why should they be?

Who is arguing?

I think you'll find that the vast majority of the people that post on this forum come here to read about football and you keep blabbering on like a half wit about taking the town end?

Who really cares?

Can we please have Eric back? At least he was relatively entertaining, you are just mildly annoying.

There are a number of facts in this world Archie my son, a number of them relating to our record against your team.

As Bob has rightly said we like to talk football on this football forum, but then i doubt you have much to add on that score do you?

I predict Archie will not be drinking in any pubs judging by his posts. I reckon he's about 13, then again he's living with his parents so he could be 50  :sherlock:

When i was younger i used to go to the adventure playground during the summer holidays and we would make boats from wood and kytes for special people who had learning difficulties and were basically disowned by parents.

It's a shame to think that archie won't be getting things like this any more made for him due to the adventure playground shutting down.

Can anybody provide evidence of our fans 'giving it the biggun' on their forums? I'm not saying there hasn't been, but i've not seen any. Not looked too hard mind.

Swindon fans on our forum seem to fall into three categories.

1. The fairly decent ones who engage in witty repartee, punctured by factual exchanges and occasional tribalism (your very own Benzel and DiCanio's Meatballs being examples);

2. A very few who are a disgrace to STFC and the British educational system at large (eg Fantasy-something-or-other, who published an obscene rhyme about the departed Martin Alkdrige);

3. The remainder who are, frankly, plain boring (stand up BigKev, who punctuates every post with "forever in our shadow", and various juvenile keyboard warriors). This is the most annoying group by far. Our administrator has decent values and will only ban the likes of Fantasy, leaving the bores to continue peddling their tedium.

Good luck against Crewe (and I mean that, let's hope we both have a 100% record to defend on the 21st).

That pretty much sums up every football forum Eric, as proved by your very own "ArchieK".

And I hope, like you, that we both go into the game on a 100% record so it adds even more spice to what is going to be a Phall of a spicey encounter!

Good news! We both still have a chance of a 100% record to defend on 21st.

Can we please have a blanket boycott of any pub which agrees to host away fans exclusively for matches at the CG. Why not mix?

Thank you all for your input. We have got an Adver front page out of it today.

I intend to boycott pubs (in Swindon and elsewhere) which agree to be exclusively for away fans. I remember going in the Merlin once and only then realising it had been given to Leeds. Leeds fans had been told but not Town fans. Not on.

It was the same with charlton in the playoffs, was a good thing they fucked up the pool tables for the landlprd to shell out for

The £30 I would spend in the Merlin tonight and the £50 I would spend in the Merlin on Sat night are going to other pubs unless the landlord changes his decision to open at 9am on Sunday as a 'designated away pub'.

I assume the "designated away pub" was a police decision?

Opening at 9am was presumably a financial one though. Police must have been happy to have 'em all rounded up in one place. Though if I was an Oxford knuckle dragger looking to kick off I'm not sure the Merlin would be on my list for that very reason.

I understand your resentment towards the idea, but I'm sure the landlord of the Merlin would rather open the pub and make several thousand pounds from the mass travelling army of the pox then worry about losing your £80 over the next 2 nights.

For the record I called The Sir Daniels Arms earlier who informed me they would def be open this Sunday from 9am as well as the other 2 Wetherspoons in town centre. However, they also said they themselves will not know until 8am that morning if they are designated as a 'home' pub or an 'away' pub and that it is a police decision, not theirs.
