Title: BBC comedy
Post by: adje on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, 20:12:47
..I know this has been well covered in the past but I just watched "In With The Flynns"-half an hour of my life I will never get back.I despair of the so-called sit com these days.I mean when something as shite as My Family gets yet another series there is absolutely no hope.

Was that the one that was about a guitar and a skiing trip. If so it made My Family look good.

I think My Family has been cancelled by the way :)

When you live abroad you get to see just how much Brit comedy is valued.

But fook me there is some shoddy shit as well. I still can't fathom how little Britain won awards, it just ain't fucking funny.

I watched a re-run of Shooting Stars yesterday, from 1976, it was still hilarious and was the best thing on by a mile at about 6.00pm last night.

Can't remember the last good, new, british comedy that was on tv. The Trip probably. Summer Heights High (on BBC Three but Australian) was brilliant and I liked the first 2 episodes of Angry Boys but it wasn't enough to make me remember to watch the others.

I'm not much of a TV fan though, I'm only just getting around to watching the first episodes of the Wire.

Some parts of Little Britain were actually quite good though, its just the catchphrases and popularity that make it seem really shit now.

Shooting star is hilarious

I still get the giggles thinking about Superhans: Men with ven.

Little Britain...... way to repetitive. "I'm a lady".... for fucks sake, again?

Men with ven. Brilliant! I've not actually watched the latest series. The first episode wasn't that great and I forgot about it after that... I think I may have just found myself something to do!

One of the most over rated comedies ever - on a par with the Young Ones for being a cult but actually shite.

I think the last time I found Matt Lucas funny was as George and Marjory Daws on Shooting Stars!

Some parts of Little Britain were actually quite good though, its just the catchphrases and popularity that make it seem really shit now.

Everyone thought it was the best thing ever to begin with. Eventually everyone realised it was the same jokes every week and that it actually wasn't that funny. Some comedy stands the test of time, Little Britain doesn't.

Think it's a bit unfair criticising the BBC's comedy output as they've come up with so many good shows over the years and it's impossible for every show to be a hit. There is probably only one or two hit comedies that come out the US every year.

It feels wrong but Not Going Out is probably my favourite at the moment. New series coming soon as well I think.

The bbc comedy output is shite at the moment. There's some good stuff coming out of America at the moment. It's always sunny in philladelphia, Community and the american office - all very very funny shows which you are doing yourself a diservice if you have not seen them

Best US comedy by a mile is Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I've tried getting into that, but I find it more irritating that funny. Larry Davids "oooh i'm jewish and angry and fed up about everything" shtick just gets annoying after a while

I find Modern Family to be very tolerable on the whole. Some annoying bits but generally well written and acted.

And as for Sofia Vergara....

the american office -

I've watched the American office. It's not bad, a few giggles and quite enjoyable.

The comedy is too choreographed for my liking though, the original office is so subtle that you are still noticing new stuff at the third time of watching. Yet utterly hilarious the first time around.

Agree with the Stewart Lee comments - really enjoyed his latest series

The first season of the american one is cringeworthy - they try and do the english one and fail miserabley. The rest of it gets better as they give it their own slant on things though. Not sure if it's running out of legs as it goes into it's 8th season.

If it's subtelty, parody and meta-jokes you want, I seriously recommend watching community.

Not Going Out is a cheesy sitcom with crap 1 liners crow barred into the dialogue.Stewart Lees Comedy Vehicle is brilliantly observed thought provoking stuff but im not sure its actually funny.Mock the Week makes me want to throw things at my telly.
I enjoyed Him and Her , Lead Balloon and Getting On but none actually made me laugh.
Not BBC but I love The IT Crowd,I came to it late only really got into it after the last series.Peep Show is inspired.I listen to quite alot of BBc Radio comedy and Down the Line is hilarious although it didnt work when they tried it on telly.

Me too. I think Lee Mack is seriously underrated.

Tim Vine is the best stand up I have ever seen but very closely followed by Lee Mack, Not going on has so much potiential but doesnt quite hit the mark, but gets very very close at times.

And Adje.....

-half an hour of my life I will never get back.

You would have only wasted it anyway! ;)

I'd also defend Not Going Out, think the Mack/Vine combo works well and they're both very funny.

Having said that the most recent series was a bit underwhelming.

As for BBC Comedy in general, nothing will ever beat Alan Partridge.

The last comedy of any real quality on the BBC was Summer Heights High, it was Australian and aired about 3 years ago. Before that you had Alan Partridge, The Office and my personal favourite League Of Gentleman. Not much really in recent years.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Arrested Development and Modern Family are in my opinion better than anything this country has produced in the last 15 years.

Community started out very funny, but really went downhill in the second season.

I've pretty much given up on British sitcoms, Peep Show is the only one still worth watching.

Best US comedy by a mile is Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Wrong. It's The Big Bang Theory. It's simply the funniest thing on TV by far, and when you consider that in the US they cancel shows on a whim, they've already signed up Big Bang Theory for another 3 years.

That doesn't mean it'll make it all the way. If ratings dropped enough then the network would have no hesitation is ending it.

Big Bang Theory's canned laughter winds me up.

I like the cheesiness of Not Going Out - admitedly the recent series really shoe-horned the gags in. The first few with the amercian girl who was very cute were some of the best.  I think she went on to be the doctor in the mental hospital in season 6 of House

Summer Heights High was very good and I'm enjoying Angry Boys with the same bloke writing and acting in it (can't remember his name off the top of my head).

Have to agree with The Thick of It being brilliant and I will also add my name to the list of people that like Not Going Out even though I know it's not cool to like a comedy that's "gone mainstream".  It's just very funny.

I generally give so called comedies 5-10 mins to amuse me,if it fails then off it goes.
That pile of shit with Will Mellor i tried and switched off.
Mrs Browns boys was good i thought. Gavin and Stacey was overated imo. Was watchable and at times amusing but nothing special.
The best Comedy i've seen recently from the beeb was the xmas edition of The Royle family. Different class was that.

Mr G is up there with Tubbs (LOG) as being my favourite ever tv character. Genius.

She's a naughty girl with a bad habit, bad habit for drugs.

Summer heights high was brilliant, Mr G and Jonah were superb characters.  Having said that Angry Boys has grew and grew and S.mouse! is an equal the SHH characters.  He's so good I'm tempted to buy his album.

Cannot wait for the season finale next week, Nath's party is going to be immense.

'We can be heroes' is Chris Lilley's early work and it's well worth a watch, it's when Daniel & Nathan made their debuts.
