Title: oi office workers
Post by: sonicyouth on Wednesday, July 6, 2005, 17:14:11
I'm starting (another) new job in tomorrow, it's office work which I've never done before - what's the dress code? They didn't tell me and I don't want to turn up in a shirt and tie cos I'll look like a twat, equally I don't want to wear jeans or I'll look like a bum.

life is so hard

what company?

in most office's you'll wear 'smart' all week and have a casual day on friday. some places though (like nationwide) it's casual all week long, which is nice

High heels and suspenders - go for "non-conformist shock value" but still with a smart and classy slant.

you've not seen me, have you paul? :D

It's a company called TMS in Abingdon, I've got no idea what they do really but it's a temp job. Would black trousers, black shoes and a smart shirt with no tie be okay?

On a more sensible note, that's a good hedge for the first day, but take a tie in with you as well, just in case. Not a black one though or you'll spend all day with people asking you about the funeral and/or making amusing waiter jokes. Which may lead to unfortunate "smashing their head into office furniture" incidents which can jeopardise future employment prospects.

Wear a tie, you can always take it off.  I don't have to wear a tie at work, which is nice, but a good tie does look cool.

We usually wear shirt and tie with casual dress on a friday. This week we have to wear casual dress to 'fool' the protesters!!

We have to wear "smart casual" as the contract says, no jeans etc but no ties either, as other people have said I would take one with you just in case.

I'm shirt and trousers (no tie), then anything goes on a Friday.

SY, couldn't you just call the main switchboard/reception of the company, explain your starting as a temp, and ask what the dresscode is?

Suited and booted every time mate.  Dress code is important and yes I am sensible for once.

Its always compulsory to wear a suit and tie on your first day and remember to clean your shoes too.  Wear proper colours like  black, dark grey or navy.

Novelty ties and socks are a BIG no-no (as are hawaiian shirts)!

Also if you take packed lunch - put it in a briefcase not a carrier bag.

Take pen and paper (preferably in a portfolio case).

They will give you pens and papers but it looks better if you've actually thought to tale your own.

Ask sensible questions and smile and be enhusiastic.

Finally - welcome to the world of office work.  It truly sucks

 :D

don't worry about the briefcase you'll be fine without one - people only ever take one on their first day!

good luck :D

I once had an ace job.....it was for IBM in Havant

They had a huge open plan office, and if the workers got bored of the view or arrangement of their furniture, they called up me and another couple of lads to move the furniture around. They had to provide a little map of what they wanted ...where the rubber plant went etc.

Most of the time we spent down in the bowels of the building playing cards etc....70's working practices were a bit more worker friendly...

Were they allowed to smoke at their desks Reg?

I'd like to have seen the day where you could spark up at your desk.

Sonic wear a tie and just wap it off if needs be.

yeah what dazzza says sonic.

do a jacket and tie - you can always take 'em off but its more difficult to go out and find a jacket/tie combo

Aye chances are you'll meet the managrs and stuff, the sort of people you'll only ever see or talk to again at the office party so it pays to look smartish.

Better to be over dressed than under.

Back in the early 1800s i was a civil servant (yeah i know the shame...)

We were allowed to smoke at our desks  between certain times of the day for about 1/2 an hour in the morning and 1/2 an hour in the afternoon.

no one complained  8)

Where can I get a job like that?  Actually I'm cutting down, want to start trying to make something of being able to sing, going to perform at a place a couple of miles away soon.

I like wearing ties, got a nice collection. Although I went for a casual shirt and no tie today forgetting I was supposed to tag along to a big meeting!

Unfortunately SY, much temp work is stuffing, unless it's data entry of course, which is equally depressing.

my day consisted of data entry, stuffing envelopes and using the franking machine. it was really really gay.

Data entry isn't so bad if you work with your mate(s) - just spend the whole time talking. Last time I worked in an office we were allowed to wear shorts and t-shirt if we wanted, the lack of air conditioning made it too hot
