And away fans. Bit of a shame it's near the CG to be honest.

Isn't that 2 murders in Manny Road in the space of 6 months or so? I seem to remember one not long back.

There was an attempted murder in November, during our home match with Charlton.

The centre of Swindon has been left to rot for decades while successive council administrations focussed on developing the ever-expanding suburbs.  And this is the result.  I know development is now planned - and I hope it works out - but I can't help feeling that the town is no longer in the race and that it's all too little too late.

Anyway, the area needs help...and quickly.  I can't see the likes of Zurich Financial Services remaining in the area for much longer unless things improve.

Spot on, it's a crying shame that its been allowed to just ebb away like it has. The whole town centre needs redevelopment.

Does anyone know what exactly the plans are to improve the centre? What parts etc?

New bus station and revamped area around Zurich/Fleming Way and the development at the old college building is all i'm aware of. That's if they actually happen.

Got to be done. Very little worth saving.

Need to get some roads in there though. Unless they want Swindon to have the most innaccessible Town centre in the country.

From the Adver....

POLICE have launched a murder probe after a man was killed in the town centre.

The victim, aged 40 and understood to be from the local area, was involved in an "altercation" with an unknown number of men last night, said police.

It is believed he was stabbed.

An ambulance crew arrived on scene at the incident, which happened at around 9.30pm midway down Manchester Road, but were unable to save him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men, aged 22 and 23 and also from the local area, were arrested in the area shortly afterward on suspicion of murder.

They are being held at Gablecross police station.

Last night police spoke only of a "serious incident" unfolding, as sniffer dogs and specialist units were spotted combing the area.

Manchester Road and some surrounding streets were closed off.

Police this morning said that part of Manchester Road is likely to remain shut for the rest of today, as they carry out inquiries.

Police will be knocking door-to-door in the area today, and have called on anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

Superintendent Wayne Bonne, from Gablecross police station, said: "Enquiries are very much in their initial stages and will continue across the weekend. Whilst they do we will maintain an increased, visible presence in the area.

"I would like to thank the local community for their assistance so far which has enabled us to make two early arrests.

"We will continue to engage with the community as well as our key partner agencies in our continuing drive to keep Swindon safe."

Very true.  No attempt to adequately upgrade road capacity as the population of the town has grown.  Wootton Bassett Road, for example, was inadequate in the late 1980s for the traffic volumes it was handling then.  It's almost as if managing the deterioration of the town centre has been a council policy...to encourage fewer people to make the trip and therefore avoid the need for costly infrastructure upgrades.

Meanwhile, in Bristol and Reading...

There started to be a few abandoned houses in the late 90s. Then Labour opened the floodgates and now its a heaving ghetto.

Strange how you can be driving with no seat belt or doing 5 miles over the limit and police are everyware,i regularly go down that area(not for pleasure ;)) and there is never a police car in sight though it is a hotbed of shitness,2 murders in a year shows this.

To be honest just another sad stain imprinted on our Town Centre area.

Brilliant. So I can say as a white working class man with no discernable skills. I can say that having voted Labour all my life and even for Toni Blair (1st time) I would never vote for them while I've got a hole in my hairy arse.

In the central area of Swindon, we've got the largest Goan population in the UK (and that includes London) and a large Pakistani and Bangladeshi community, and from what I've heard a number of Afghani's have just arrived. It's seemingly the place to put new arrivals into the town as it's close to the town centre.

I left my car at Autospeed on County Road one Saturday lunchtime and as it was going to take a couple of hours walked into town using the back roads around Manchester Road.  It was quite an eye opening experience to say the least.  Even though I had my young son with me, I was propositioned several times by dodgy ethnics (as Arriba puts it), witnessed a completely obvious drug deal and a domestic where a clearly intoxicated woman was throwing puches at a bloke.  This was all in the middle of the day.  I'm not an easily intimidated female, but I have to say I felt complete relief when I reached the sanctuary of the bus station!  I didn't make the return journey on foot either, I rang my husband who collected us from town and dropped us back there!  :)

I've done a walk down Cricklade Road, County Road, quite a few times recently, usually about 3 or 4 in the morning, after a night of shagging.  Every time I've been propositioned by a lady of night or pimp, or both.

Fortunately one of tyhe birds in question has had the good sense to move into OT.  :)

When I first visited Swindon in 1993 I was told that Manchester Road was the one road to stay away from. In 1994 me and my friends stayed at a County Road guesthouse while at Swindon and during the week long stay we saw: two guys beating the hell of guy with sticks in the Manchester Rd/County Rd corner, dope dealers along Manchester Road trying to sell us stuff (especially outside the Tap and Barrell) and the hookers.

A mate of mine was by the way asked "Do you have the time?" in Manchester Road by a lady when he was out walking, and he replied: "Time for what?". She got pissed, because the only thing she was asking for was how much the clock was...

HAHA!

Shitchester Road won't be my next prefered place to stay in Swindon, that's for sure!

I used to regularly(ish) pop into the shops in that area to pick up fresh fruit / veg and the odd bit of ethnic food like home-made Samosas etc.

All was well up until a couple of years ago. No idea why, but almost overnight (in reality probably a couple of months in between my lunchtime visits) the whole atmos seemed to change. Once friendly shopkeepers turned into suspicious looking cunts who's demeanour and body language seemed to openly question what the fuck I was doing in their shop, and other customers were just plain fucking ignorant by pushing in, jostling me out of the way in front of the food counters etc.

And I'm talking about 3 or 4 of the shops by the way, not just a one-off bad experience visit.

Last time I was there in the winter (the Halal specialists in Broad St which I'd been in literally hundreds of times before) I felt so fucking uncomfortable and unwanted as a customer, I can't be fucked to go there any more.

They can shove their fucking Halal shit shops wherever they want to. The place is a khazi nowadays and wont get a penny of income from my pocket. Cunts.

I've live in three places off of Manchester Rd in the past - Rosebery St, Aylesbury St and Gladstone St, the latter being right next to the Tap.  Never had any problems, and in Aylesbury St the Prossies acted as extra security in our doorway!

Seems to have been a shift once the shops began changing a couple of years ago, although the Bread Basket remains just about and continues to sell a cracking Breakfast Special.

Justice for their friend i believe as it was hard to tell as their spelling was worse than my 7 year olds.
There was also a case for some members of the edl there at the same time, that probably explained the amount of police there and before anybody asks i didn't hear it from a friend i was in the court building this morning on totally unrelated matters.
