Title: DVinho's
Post by: Reg Smeeton on Saturday, April 2, 2011, 18:27:32
9 year unbeaten league home run comes to an end. Real lose 0-1 to Sporting Gijon.

Gijon's coach Manolo Preciado, will take great pleasure from this as he offered Mourinho out back in November....saying something like I don't like the Special One and will be telling him to his face.

My mate pointed this out to me a bit earlier that The Special One had never lost a home league game in his managerial career, to be fair that does rather substantiate his 'special' claims, thats a fucking incredible record.

He had lost one at home before today. But literally only one, at Porto against Beira-Mar. Two games in ten years isn't too bad I suppose.

I remember Sporting Gijon playing at the County Ground in a pre-season game, just after we had signed some bloke called Sam Parkin from Chelsea. He scored a penalty, and possibly the other goal in a 2-2 draw.

The other goalscorer was a young Royce Brownlie wasn't it?

cant imagine so. Brownlie came 4 years after Parkin.

Sam already pointed to a link but to make it obvious, he was here on trial but we didn't sign him that time. He came back a few yeas later and Wise signed him..

No Reg, I understood what you said. I didn't read your post before I wrote mine.

I've actually got some old photos of that game and I'm pretty sure it was him in one of them. Hence my first post in this thread. I just checked to see if he did play for Gijon. I will try and scan them and upload them.  :)

Ooh exciting....this could add to the list of WC winners who've played at the CG. It's quite a small list. A longer list is players who've appeared in a WC final and played at the CG.

Banks has deffo played here. Bobby Charlton played for Prestom here as player manager and scored the only goal.
We have also had someone who scored a goal in a World Cup Final but lost play here the year after the final I believe. Any guesses?

My guess would be Dick Nanninga....who along with Jan Jongbloed, played for JC Roda Kerkrade

That was a brilliant pre season friendly against Roda JC in 79 winning 4-1 against a team full of internationals and that included Chris Kamara hitting the clock at the Stratton Bank with a penalty!
