Title: Terriers!
Post by: Acetripper on Friday, March 18, 2011, 08:11:15
Hi Everybody, Terriers fan here!

I can't believe the League position you're in, a classic case of post play-off blues? Or is it the breaking up of the Paynter/Austin partnership that's proved costly? Either way it's a huge surprise because last season your were a very good side! So what's happened then?

I really have no idea why but I've always have a soft spot for Swindon Town FC, maybe it's because I'm old enough to remember your famous exploits with Don Rogers, surly the best player ever to wear your shirt.

I'm looking forward to tomorrows game and despite our respective League One placings I'm expecting a tough game, with your lads fighting for their lives and our trying to confirm automatic promotion credentials. Got to work for a couple of hours in the morning then it's a few drinks in Leeds then over to Hudders by train for a few more no doubt.

Safe journey to those making the trip up here.

:Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

Does that mean you think you've got no chance?

I'm very wary of fans who play down their teams chances at The Galpharm. Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle are cracking examples of this, both gaining notable victories over us while in lowly league positions and their fans insisting they hadn't a prayer.

So I'm keenly aware, it won't be a push over for us tomorrow! 8)

I'm expecting a tough game,

Welcome Andy Capp, nice to see you got time off from wife beating/ferret furtling/whippet bothering/other generic northern insult in order to post here. Has the working mens club got internet access now, by heck.

OK with the compulsory northerner insults out the way we  can move on.

It won't be a tough game due to:

A. Our current form is no wins in 14.
B. Our away form:
2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 2, 1 = 16 goals conceded in last 7 away games.
4, 0, 1, 2, 0, 1, 0 = 8 goals scored in last 7 games. This includes the 4 at Charlton when we still had Austin and the team presumably though they better look good on TV to impress any perspective new employers.

Which bit of that suggests it will be a tough game? Strange things do happen, occasionally. We used that up winning at Charlton.

PS:
Chips + Gravy = good
Christmas cake + cheese = bad (still not worked out if this abomination is Geordie, Yorkshire or confined to the City of York).

Well firstly gentlemen, I'm descendant from celtic stock, my parents being Irish, so jokes about whippets, pigeons and the like hardly register with me, although ubiquitous racist jokes about 'thick paddys' do and they rile me.

However, Yorkshire is a wonderful part of the world, friendly people, beautiful countryside and great beers. Huddersfield and surrounding areas are steeped in social and economic history and along with our cousins over t'hill combined to create the cradle of the industrial revolution. I've never lived in Huddersfield itself although I was born only a few miles away.

If you're travelling up from Swindon for the game tomorrow you'll be sure of a warm welcome. If you want any drink or eating advise you ask! :D

A normal team would scrap for an away point, and i imagine we will provide a tiny bit of resistance until around the 10th minute when you nab the opener through a lucky deflection or woeful marking at a set piece. Then the floodgates will open.

Yeah! It had to be more than just one player leaving. I've not looked at your remaining fixtures but what's your chances of avoiding the drop? I always think of Swindon as being a decent second tier club, dropping into the fourth is unthinkable. Hope you manage to avoid it! :hmmm:

Amankwha, McGovern, Ferry, Pericard and Lucas still at club but either injured or out of form/favour. Pericad was always bit part, Amankwha's role is arguable, but the form of the other 3 were key. Its not happened for them this year.

Okay, teams that push defenders out, squeeze midfield and play on the break seem to do well at The Galpharm. If you try to play football without a combative game plan you'll probably get a sound beating. So how will your lad play it?

In the past some teams have tried and succeeded in out-muscle us but the outstanding feature of our 16 game unbeaten run has been our competitiveness. It's not been pretty at times but it's been affective. Indeed opposing fans have said we've hoofed the ball too but that's usually when we've been pressured by close marking and by squeezing our play into a narrow cross field band either side of the half-way line.

I really have no idea what will happen tomorrow, which has been quite often the case this season. But lets hope it's an entertaining game at least!

If we score a few I reckon pandemonium will break lose inside The Galpharm.

Despite things starting to come together, we still appear to have a large number of fans who aren't convinced we can do it. A win against Swindon could actually be pivotal in that context. We've drawn a lot of games and had phases throughout the season where we've the stumbled so they'll take some convincing even though we're on 16 unbeaten.

In August, expectation amongst Huddersfield Town fans was higher than I've know for a very long time and many were expecting us to walk away with the League One Title, of course nothing is ever that simple.

I'm genuinely sorry Swindon Town are cast in the role of the sacrificial lamb tomorrow but nothing less than three points will be good enough. ;)

Have a safe journey!

If you go 1 up early doors our lot will probably cave in. You may well stumble but it won't be against us. Sacrificial lamb is quite an apt phrase as unfortunately a team of lambs would have more bite and fight than us.
Like you, expectations were high this year - not necessarily for automatic but probably another pop at the play offs. Basically consolidating on last season.
Any season this would be a fucking disaster but given our hopes this has really hit us fucking hard.
Don't mind you lot but please, please fuck up tomorrow and then you can win every game until the end of the season.

We have had unexpected wins in this position before. Beating Charlton 1-0 away many moons ago in a top v bottom (I think) clash. The season they paid for our yoof to play in the milk cup.

Fuck it we'll win despite having 1 shot to their 34. And 4 of their players will get sent off for Dean Gorre tribute stropping.

That came straight after we'd unexpectedly broken a run of 19(?) games without a win by beating Huddersfield midweek at home!

Good Morning Everyone!

A beautiful 'Spring like' morning up here in 'Gods Own', with a clear blue sky, a bit nippy just now but it's forecast to rise to a relatively warm 12c by mid-day. I'm into work for a couple of hours than it's down to the Wetherspoons in Park Row Leeds for a few 'brighteners' and then on by train to Hudders. The thought of two home games in succession after playing four from the last five away certainly has a wonderful appeal especially with our current League placing. It goes without saying we need to pick up maximum points in these two. The Notts County game after this one is being played next Sunday at 4pm for the benefit of the Sky TV cameras.

The last poster has mention how Swindon have pulled off notable wins in similar circumstances in the past and I acknowledge that. This is football, nothing is certain and as I've mentioned before if you come with 'a plan' and carry it out affectively you may well get something. There's nothing more frustrating for the home team than opponents who have a well organised rear guard, that crowd midfield and breaking quickly down the flanks. Teams that have come and parked the proverbial bus across the middle have done well against us in fact.

As I've also mentioned opposing fans who have given their team no chance (like most of you) before the game and predicted a battering for their lads have turn out to be a modern day football 'tojan horse' so if you don't mind I'm taking no notice of your negativity. Heres to an entertaining game either way!

Regards and all the very best after today! :D

Well, where do I start?

From our point of view this was one of the most frustrating games of the season and that includes ones that we've lost too. All credit to Swindon Town, you fought for your lives, kept your shape, put your bodies on the line, stuck to your game plan and played very well in midfield. However, on another day we would have had the game won by half-time because there were times when we looked like completely overwhelming you.

In stark contrast the second half was the absolute opposite, we looked hesitant, slow and lacked ideas, even so we worked hard and fashioned a number of decent chances. Lady luck and a referee, who gave us virtually nothing all afternoon, conspired against us. It really was one of those days and I counted that we hit a post three times, the cross bar twice, had two kicked off the line in the dying minutes and in the first half had what looked like a stone wall penalty denied.

At the end it felt like a defeat for us even though it was our 17th successive game unbeaten.

Good luck to Swindon Town on that showing you'll definitely survive the dread drop. Well played! ;)

Hi Acetripper, if the blatant penalty you are on about was when Roberts dived you are very wrong, I was directly in line with it and it was the kind of thing that in an ideal world would result in a straight red and possible public flogging! Thought the ref was weak full stop though: If it wasn't for us and our players Roberts wouldn't have got his deserved booking; also thought our centre fotward, Andrew, was penalised a lot for being bigger, stronger and better at football than your centre backs. All in all though I was delighted with the point and looking at you lot yesterday once Ward develops an understanding with your players he could be the added ingredient that takes you up, I know you've been knocking on the door for a while now.
Good luck and all that, I've been to your place a few times - my visits to the wifes family (in Manchester) often coincide with town games up North (I think she is starting to realise that this isn't pure fluke!) and you certainly live in one of the nicer places that i've been to up there.
