Title: Snow
Post by: suttonred on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 17:40:08
If anyone is driving/travelling to North Surrey or South London tomorrow take the day off! We've had 9 or 10 inches and all the roads are either gridlocked or closed at the mo. I'm just back from a 9 mile 5 hour walk to collect my daughter from school. Those of you who know me will wonder how i've lived through that to be able to type this.

There was nothing this morning. It has snowed all day, cant beleive how much fell.

Took my daughter to school at 8. as you say light dusting, by 10 I knew it was all going to go tits up. If i'd gone in the car I would still be out there now.

And hooray sutton council also. They were boasting last week they had 50000 tonnes of salt. I'm guessing they still have 49999 left in the yard the fucking idiots.

To be fair I did see one gritter on my marathon hike. It was stuck on an incline and had blocked the road off!

mental weather today.i was in west london and it was snowing a bit but the roads were running ok.

Weird how central London is so vastly different to everywhere around it - is a few inches of snow too much to ask?? We've had very little so far.

Wot snow.

There's hardly any here :(

Appears to be a strip across the country without any, an we are slap bang in the middle of it.

One of the guys at work is from Stevenage, and they are pretty much in the same boat (ie no snow). Howver we have someone else who comes in from Derby, who had to abandon his car & walk home last night.

Agree it's all very localised.  A section of our driveway is on an incline, and now impassible...but South West Trains are running a near normal service through Hampshire and Surrey so I have been able to get to work.  Different story for anyone trying to use South Eastern trains from Kent.  Charing Cross station was deserted when I walked through this morning...and none of my colleagues who commute in from that direction have made it in.

the speed of the traffic meant even if I did I'm confident any repairs could be achieved with the loose change down the back of the sofa. about 27p.

It's 2 foot deep outside my house. My car has disappeared completely into a big pile of snow. I'm pretty sure it's still under there though as it's vaguely Ford Fiesta shaped. Either that or some smart arse car thief with snow chains has pinched it and built a snow car to hide the fact.

Three points????

Not clearing your roof is not a motoring offence. Lights well they might be I suppose.

Took me 40 minutes to travel 5 miles this morning still snowing here about 2 inches I suppose, new snow falling on a frozen surface, looks like we are short of grit again.

Swindon gritters  all main roads into the town were easily passible even if it was at 12mph all the way. Almost crashed a few times- the snow fell off the top off the car onto my windscreen. Maybe i should have cleared all the snow not just the windows. DUH....

if it endagers life then it is. What happens is, because it's so cold, the snow freezes then can slide off the car. Can hit the car in front or passengers on the path.

Yes very true, but it is still not a motoring offence which warrants 3pts.

I have wipers on my lights but as yet haven't got them on the roof - didn't move for about 5 minutes this morning and snow settled on top of the car again, am I supposed to get out and remove the snow again?

Well if that is the case, it is a new one on me and I've been driving for nearly 40 years and you have just informed me I have broken another motoring offence, must nearly have the full set now.

Title: Re: Snow
Post by: suttonred on Thursday, December 2, 2010, 10:07:42
Can't see that being right. There are about 3 million cars up here with at least a foot of snow on the roof. Sure they have better things to do.

Title: Re: Snow
Post by: Sippo on Thursday, December 2, 2010, 10:09:24
Quote
The Road Policing Unit said that there is no specific legislation on driving with snow on the roof of a vehicle, however if it slips over the windscreen, or flies into the path of another car, it could leave the driver open to being penalised for driving without due consideration, dangerous driving, not being in proper control of the vehicle, not having a full view ahead and windows not being sufficiently clean.

A police spokesman said: “Any snow left on vehicle bodywork, such as the bonnet or roof, could slide onto lights or windows causing dangerous obstruction to vision of the driver or signals to other road users.

“Any large amount of snow could slide from a moving vehicle and onto a footpath or roadway possibly causing danger or injury to other road users or pedestrians.”

I thought it would be common sense to do? Any good driver would do it.

Title: Re: Snow
Post by: dell boy on Thursday, December 2, 2010, 10:15:07
You are obviously right Sippo.

I just cant see though how a couple of inches of snow on my roof can make me a reckless driver, it certainly isn't going to hurt the pavement or block it, it wont hinder another driver if it blows off my roof, etc.

Title: Re: Snow

It was snowing quite heavily here for most of yesterday afternoon but it hasn't settled at all. I've not been out since Tuesday so there may be 10ft of snow just around the corner from my flat :)

I think we've got the wrong attitude to driving in snow anyway, as a country we're never prepared for it, our cars aren't designed for it and very few of us are actually used to driving in snow. My company's attitude to us getting to work in adverse conditions is bizarre, especially considering the fact we can easily work from home. I'm in the fortunate(?) position that although my commute to work is 40 miles, I live on a main road and drive down the M40. Even then it only takes one prick who thinks that his name is Petter Solberg to smash into you.

waffle...

Loads of snow here in Austria (as you might expect) I only got my snow tyres put on today and they are fantastic. I had an appointment in Folkestone with kwik fit to have winter wheels put on before i caught the eurotunnel train but my sat nav took me to this out of the way hickville village with single track roads and steep hills and I got stuck in the snow. 2 hours later I was lucky enough to have a tractor pass by and he was willing to give me a tow.
