They could give him a £20m signing on bonus and £20m a season and it would still work out cheaper than buying him in January.

Would Rooney actually be bothered by a few months bench warming? There is no summer tournament to prepare for and there is no chance of him getting dropped by England and little chance of Man Utd not playing him as they need him too much. I see it as Rooney using the Glazers as an excuse.  He knew about the lack of spending when Ronaldo and Tevez left and revelled in being the main man at the club last season.  He also went on to declare he wanted to stay at the club for life and become a legend like Scholes, Neville and Giggs.  He has lost his form since March, his private life has gone tits up and he has used the Glazers as a convenient excuse to get out of the club so he can save face with the fans.  It's a big gamble for him, if he leaves and United go on and have a succesful season and the team he joins does not it will be shown as a big mistake!

A nice big pay rise was on offer before all of this so your statement is a bit odd.  Something obviously changed somewhere in the process, read Fergies quotes from earlier in the week he said United and Gill were prepared to offer Wayne the best terms for any player in the country.  So for me finance hasn't come into it, something has been said to him to make him change his mind (i.e United will spend on big players) or he has been that shocked how everyone has reacted to him leaving and has decided against it.

Or he's leaving anyway and the five-year deal is just a notional thing to let the heat die down and ensure Utd get the best price possible for him (and that he gets to demand really sky-high wages wherever he goes "to match my current deal")
