Good test of our fighting qualities this I think. Poor result last weekend, on the box, lets show everyone what we're about.

3-0 Town (Pericard 2, Ritchie)

Glanced at the league table in the paper this morning.  Local rivalry aside, we really need to win this, don't we.

I'll not be able to get to a TV showing Sky this evening, so hoping that BBC Radio Five will at least have updates.  No Premier games this evening, so it's a possibility.

Hat-trick of incorrect predictions?

I reckon it'll be a close game, probably 2-1 but not sure which way yet.

If we lose, I think our fans may commit mass suicide. Unfortunately, with the number of players missing or doubtful and the Gas in good form we'll struggle to a point in front of 9500, with the gas filling the Arkells with 1200

We're so inconsistent at the moment that none of us has a clue which version of our squad is going to show up.  So trying to make a prediction is futile, in my view.  (Although if you were going to push me, I'd say it's probably going to be 3-1 to them, a draw, or 2-0 to us.)

they beat us tonight and it doesn't look good does it, thats why we'll turn it on and spank them

season starts here - we owe them from last season... off the pitch we still owe them for the inn on the green episode but I'll leave that to our single celled supporters

Three nil town

COME ON YOU FUCKING REDs

Title: Re: Swindon Town V Bristol Rovers Official Matchday thread
Post by: Bert1981 on Monday, October 11, 2010, 12:07:02
We really need to win tonight! Putting aside the fact it's a local derby and we owe them big time for last season, a win would get us looking at the right end of the table, we are a bit too close to the bottom at the moment.

Wouldn't risk Charlie, I can see them trying to rough him up and we don't want another Barry Corr situation on our hands. Fingers crossed the team that took care of Huddersfield will turn up as opposed to the one that surrendered at Dagenham.

Don't think there will be much of a crowd, but should still be a decent atmosphere under the lights, definitely looking forward to it, albeit with a touch of trepidation.

Even for town fans, this is a miserable bloody thread. 2-1 to us, missed pens, sendings off, streakers (females....), and a long range injury time belter into the top corner to help us to 3 points. If you can't get up for games like this, whats the point?

Title: Re: Swindon Town V Bristol Rovers Official Matchday thread
Post by: Batch on Monday, October 11, 2010, 13:23:33
Quite a big game in terms of fan morale this one. Obviously a loss won't ruin our season and a win won't make it. But it would give everyone a massive lift to move 2 points outside the playoff places.

1-1 then.

Yep. Surprise return by Charlie as it turns out Wilson's "definitely not"s and "you're having a laugh"s were all subtle mind games inspires team and fans to an unprecedented frenzy of unity and desire, resulting in a 6-1 (have to allow for the token defensive fuck-up) romp and the entire away section in tears. Actual tears. I will settle for nothing less

Wow, what a depressing read this has been.

Why?

The point of a prediction is to guess what you think the score will be, not what you want it to be.  I’d love to put down a 4-0/5-0 prediction but that is highly unlikely at the moment.

Sickening....

Can't help feeling we're a bit toothless up front without Austin.  I don't care what anyone says, it's 4-5-1 not 4-3-3.  I just hope we start positive and get the Town End singing...  The rest will follow.

Really hard to figure out what I make of this year's side seeing as I saw them so much last year. We look ok defensively...but midfield just isnt working at all. None of the trio are getting on the ball nearly enough. Ball and Ritchie look dangerous, but not involved enough. I still think we look reasonable, but far from the completed article, if we can grind out a win today it will say a lot for our side I reckon.

kevin's having a mare and vincent looks lazy and unable to hold the ball up.the two wide boys look really handy though and both douglas and ferry are playing well, a super tackle from ferry in the build up to the goal. Do they need to set up a sale, or to get him off the wage bill or what?

Hopefully we can keep Ricthie for rest of season.  Has a good cross on him and got some good pace.
When Charlie is fit, Ritchie will set him up with a few goals

Much better second half, played some lovely football for the second goal. More of that and we'll be right up there.

Still got Austin, Dossevi, Caddis and Prutton to add to that as well...

I'm 50/50 on the penalty.

If there was not only 40 seconds left on the clock, the ref might have made a different decision.

Just back.

Bloody awful first half, very lucky to go in one up. Brilliant time to score the goal though.

Better second half but still room for improvement. Build up for Pericard's goal was fantastic!

We must do all we can to sign Ritchie permanently!

Never a penalty at the end, not a nervy few minutes we needed.

Overall, satisfied with that. Onwards and upwards!

The point with the penalty is that the situation should never have arisen. Lucas should have stayed in his goal and let Cuthbert usher the ball out of touch. Job done. Still, three points, a much better second half performance and a lot of positives to take out of the game. Loving Ritchie, Ball and Morrison. I liked the way after the game that after talking to Ritchie, the camera swivelled around to Morrison and was looking at his chest and had to make a sudden adjustment upwards - the bloke is massive.

All in all, happy days!

Fantastic 2nd half display won that for us. Back to playing some great football like we did last season in that 2nd 45. Ferry was excellent, Douglas had a good game and Matt Ritchie was pure class. It was an even first half but I thought we deserved it overall. 2 points off the play-offs....

Yeh sorry my bad.. Ritichie's cross for Pericard when he hit the post..

When did Pericard hit the post? It was ball in the first half, from a Micheal Rose cross?

All in all, much better, especially second half. We were rampant. The two wide lads were unbelievable and I really like the new shape, especially with the idea of Austin replacing Pericard. Ferry and Dougie were also top drawer and Morrison's header was monster. The second goal was pure class, and Ferry put one on a plate for Pericard and Dougie not long after. A few hairy moments at the back, particularly early on, but much better, and Rose had probably his best game in red.

However, and no doubt I'll get slated for this, there were a couple of dodgy performances. Amankwaah was garbage for the most part, and so was Pericard in my opinion. The amount of times everyone around me were tearing their hair out as he yet again failed to jump for a ball or make an attempt to get into the box when the ball was wide was indicative that he hasn't quite won everyone over yet. Fair play to Ritchie for bollocking him a couple of times for standing and watching crosses come into the box.

I really like the shape, and when everyone is fit would play the following

Lucas
Caddis Morrison Cuthbert Sheehan
Ferry Dougie
Ball Prutton Ritchie
Austin

Decent gate, decent atmosphere, embarrassing support from them though.

We need consistency now, and more than one good performance in a row, starting at Peterborough.

Get In! I had 2-1 on the prediction league!

Very mixed performance, first half was poor, very sloppy and too many balls given away, the goal couldn't have come at a better time though, we started the second half with confidence and played some really good football. Pericard's goal was top quality football and Ferry did fantastically well to set it up.

Impressed with Ritchie, he gave us something different going forwards and Ball on the other side didn't do badly either. Pericard led the line well enough but there were still times when he just stood and watched, that's frustrating to see as a fan.

Douglas would have been my MOTM, he really took the game by the scruff of the neck second half and drove us forwards.

So very pleased, but we still look a little bit average to me. Get Austin back, keep Ritchie and maybe put Caddis in for JPM and we could have a side that could challenge. For tonight though, have some of that Rovers and your support was laughable  :D

First half we were a bit hesitant and nervy on a fair few occasions. Amankwaah's  'mare of a season continued though I'm told by a friend of a player that he is carrying an injury - something that was already posted on here ages ago. Rovers pressed well and were probably the better of the two teams for the first 30, but there wasn't much in it.

Second half we upped our work rate harassing Rovers into errors and passing a lot better. Ball and Ritchie played really well, particularly the latter and even though Rovers had a chance or two anything less than a home win would have been unjust.

Just watched the penalty decision again an it was still soft for me. But the ref had been a cocknocker all night. Firstly he caught paynteritis  (defn: to blow the whistle whenever the big forward wins the ball) whenever Perricard touched the ball. He also gave some sof free kicks for both teams. Dougie seemed to work it out and made sure he won a couple ;)

Some nice movement tonight and we held possession well in spells.

Feels like this is the result we've been waiting for. It's an inconsistent league this year - no-one is bossing it (Brighton are nowhere near Leeds or Norwich from last season) and we can kick on through to Christmas. Inside the dressing room they've got to feel that they are play-off quality with a chance of sneaking an auto.

Someone has to really drive it home to SM that he will not get games if he leaves for a club like Newcastle.

He couldn't get a game here last year. Morrison can play week in/week out for Swindon Town and he's just 19. Good little scenario for him.

Scared a few locals at the station bar at Picadilly with my lone and noisy celebrations but thoroughly enjoyed it tonight. Thought we played some fucking lovely stuff in the second half.

Pericard was immense at holding the ball up, some lovely touches on his chest. Ball looks like he will get better and better. Ritchie's got some talent but seemed to run out of puff with about 15 to go. Thought Dougie had a phenomenal game and well done the town end for hammering their keeper who looked like he's just shit the bed at one point in the 2nd half. And how good was that 2nd goal!!!!

So happy after a pretty nervous 1st 20 mins!

I thought we were crap in the 1st half and very lucky to go in a goal to the good from probably only the 2nd decent delivery into the box in the first 45. Manky had a mare, the midfield was non existent and Cuthbert was our defence. Morrison was very poor first half.
The 2nd half, however we improved a shitload. Dougie and Ferry starting bossing the midfield. Manky just played everything simple and Morrison put in a superb 2nd 45.
Richie was MOM for me - i was really impressed with his workrate.
The 2nd goal was a thing of beauty. The ref yet again was a complete tosser. That was a very embarrasing turnout from Rovers - 800?
All in all though a good result and roll on Saturday.

I can relate to tj. I've just been in a pub full of Chelsea, as I didn't get home from work until 7.15. They enjoyed it also, not quite as much as me. Thought we were poor first half, 2nd half much better, but you can see we are a rolls royce with a misfiring cylinder. Bit of tweaking and we'll be tearing up the motorway at 150 mph!

Awful first half with a goal at the perfect time. Amankwaah, JPM, Ferry and Pericard all being pretty poor.

They all got better second half. Ferry had a fantastic second half. Amankwaah took a bit longer but seemed to finally settle towards the end.

Second goal was a great move. Ball was superb and Ritchie was fantastic. Best player on the pitch by a fucking mile. I hope Steve Cottrill wasn't watching tonight.

Good result but not overally convinced by the performance. Rovers were as poor as anything else we've played this season.

Without looking it up i can't remember. The whole of the 80s passed in an alcoholic haze. It was the year they got promoted and we got relegated and done us 5-0 at their place. It was the one where after the game all hell broke loose on the Magic - great fun that day - proper old school.

As many have said, it was a poor first half and a much improved second.

I was watching on Sky from London. I think it was Jason Roberts who said we looked more like 4-5-1 than 4-3-3 in the first half. I think this was largely because we failed to dominate the centre of the park, so Ball and Richie weren't given the freedom to get forward. It was all a bit tentative with shades of the Dagenham game...thankfully we got our act together and put a few balls into the box though.

Second half Douglas and Ferry took control and JPM hassled them. That allowed us to find space on the wings and Richie really came into his own. Great play from him and Ferry for the 2nd goal. We had the odd moment at the back but generally looked solid. Rovers gave us a game but really should have punished us for our first half performance. The penalty decision was soft but probably correct. Even if it was harsh you can see why he's given it.

All in all it was much more encouraging. I'm not sure what I make of the idea of Charlie as the lone front man. He did ok once or twice last year in that role but to carry it through the year is asking a lot. I suppose we'll see soon enough how Danny wants to use him in this system.

First ten minutes I was seeing double, even triple. Thought it was the pre-match beers but it turned out to be a contact lense malfunction. Some eye poking later and all was well.

Whilst Rovers did dominate to begin they couldn't break through. The rest of the first half had little quality on offer. However, a great cross from Rose and another towering header from Morrison stunned them.

Thought they would come out all guns blazing so I was surprised when we were the team taking it to them. Great play between Ritchie and Ferry for the second goal.

I could go on, but a good win. Glad I could be there.

I think we managed to get the ball into a couple of good positions straight after half-time, which immediately put Rovers on the back foot. It's amazing how one or two little breaks can encourage you to push on.

I can't believe how shit we were in the first half. I lost count of the number of times our players didn't even challenge for the ball or played the dumbest of passes, they were playing like they were on drugs. How we didn't end up going a goal down before we scored I'll never know.

I can't believe how good we were in the second half. Easily up there with some of our best performances last season. Passing was spot on, plenty of runs, challenging for every ball and so on.

Not quite sure what caused the change, maybe Wilson giving them a bollocking. Though I did notice we seemed to be defending very deep in the first half, allowing them plenty of space to bring the ball forward and attack. Didn't notice it being a problem in the second half and we seemed to be pushing forward and closing down a lot more.

Ritchie was a different class tonight, best player on the pitch by some distance. Potentially the long term answer to our problem on the left, if we can get Portsmouth to sell him in January.

Great game, was as annoyed with the first half as I was delighted with the second. At times during that second half we were starting to look like our old selves and that makes me wet.

Also, as it keeps getting mentioned, Morrison has 2 years left and an option of a 3rd if I heard right somewhere or other. Was it Dave telling me? Was it Fitton who said it in an interview? Was it me making it up? I dunno, but I definately heard it from somewhere which means it is true. Now where's OST to "FACT" it?

Thought it was a pen from the TE but later saw it probably wasnt but dont blame the ref for giving it...Lucas went a bit nose bleed but made some great stops.

First of all thanks to STFC dave for use of his season ticket - cheers cockle.
Makes a big difference being up in the DR compared to the TE, you can actually see whats going on.
Will probably echo most of whats been written here...

First 20 were a worry, if we had conceeded then we may have capitulated. There was some appalling communication at the back in the first half which resulted in losing possesion on more occasions than I care to remember... however,  improved drastically in the 2nd. We opened them up on several occasions and should have had a one or two more really...but saying that they also had about 3 or 4 gilt edged chances themselves, on another night could have been much differrent.

Douglas was class as always, as was ferry (his little chip for the second was awesome), thought ritchie looked dangerous throughout, pericard did what he had to do, and was on his own up front for most of the time but did shit loads of running.

Though Rose looked steady, Manks had a god awful first 15 but improved, etc etc etc

But most importantly thought the Robinettes routine (both of them) was much better than the flourescant topped girls, they were all over the place.

Pericard's like a lower-league Heskey. Holds the ball up well, doesn't score many himself but brings other players in, massively divisive in fans' opinions between those who think any forward should be a goal-scorer and those who can kind of see the point (even if they're not especially convinced)

a fair comparison.trouble is when you play that role the ball has to stick to then bring others into it.too many times its bouncing off all over the place which leads to his second touch being a tackle and often a free kick to the oppostition

Good point Arriba, and his desire to win the ball back after a shit first touch is rarely there.

I wouldn't say 5 goals from 13 games (9 starts) was a terrible return for a striker at this level. Not saying he's exactly prolific, but definitely seems to be improving on that front.

Quite.  As long as we get Charlie back soon and he's firing the way he was last season, a score rate of approx 0.4 goals per game from Vince would be just fine.

Well after reading through I agree with a fair bit of whats been said.

Ritchie was outstanding, Ball looked excellent, Douglas ran the midfield 2nd half, Ferry looked eager and full of running, Rose was pretty good, Morrison and Cuthbert excellent, Lucas did all that was asked of him, Manks got better as the game went on but was not top of his game, JPM was pretty quiet apart from 1 or 2 good passes and one attrocious free kick, and Pericard up front started slow and plodding and uninterested but improved as the game continued but is still not a lone striker/target man as most of the game we were playing 451 and not 433.

Overall so fucking glad to have some bragging rights over the Rovers supporting mates.

They brought us down to their level first half but we mullered them second period.

Excellent result and only 600 Rovers fans there....very poor showing by them.

I wouldn't say it's a terrible return either. But I don't think anyone's arguing he's a natural goalscorer. He'll chip in to the overall total, but it's not the main thing he brings to the party

Much improved overall. First half was pretty dire stuff from both teams. Scrappy derby day fare I suppose. Then both teams hit the woodwork and I'd say the game started to turn in our favour from there. If Manks needs this surgery then I think he should get it done soon and we should sort some cover out ASAP. He's starting each game quite poorly, I think the formation tweak in the 2nd half helped him a bit, but his passing was still fairly inconsistant. That is probably my biggest gripe from last night.

Other than that, solid performances all over the pitch. Especially impressed with Ritchie and how Ball seems much more at home on the right. Ferry and Dougie bossed it, much like they were doing last season and Rose had his best game to date. It probably gives him alot more confidence having a winger infront of him like Ritchie. Pericard did well at times, not so great at others. Good job he was flagged offside when he hit the post, still, I'd imagine he's rather embarrassed about that.

Well done Town, more of that 2nd half from now on.

YOU REDS.

Weve used up a bit of luck last night. That first 30 minutes was poor all round and we could have been at least 2 down at half time. 0-0 at Half time would have been good, so to be a goal up was a bit of a miracle. Morrison is such a tremendous threat from set pieces. He scares the shit out of defenders (I prefer him in the oppositions box to our own).

The ref was rubbish. He let Rovers kick lumps out of Douglas all night, but gave free kicks for an arm across the chest, nothing free kicks, and a nothing penalty at the end.

I wonder if JPM will be dropped for the next few games? Not great last night. Playing in the middle he's going to come up against Ferry/Douglas/Prutton trio.

Ball and Ritchie came of age last night as first team players. Both were very good to watch. But it was Douglas and Ferry who really dug deep to get us the win.

A word for their goalie who was shitting it all second half. Well done Town End. There was a spell after the second goal when he was really wobbling and we could have added a couple more.

Rovers are so scary - the Inn on the Green episode and now spitting at young girls. I'm showing my age here but we used to "self police" things like this. If Town did that years ago they'd have got a slap from their own and probably be too scared to got to matches again until they learnt how to behave. The same as Millwall should have "self policed" at Wembley.
Since when did football fans get so wanky, picking on unacceptable targets. Are there no codes of conduct any more for "active" fans.

Think you need to be careful when making generalisations.  You're talking about a few isolated incidents in the present day, and comparing them to what went on 'in the main' some years ago.  I'm no expert, but I'm quite sure that isolated incidents where innocent folk were on the receiving end of violence also occurred in the 1980s and 1990s.  But you won't remember them now because it was a long time ago.  Was there ever a golden age of hooliganism where safety of the general public was the overriding consideration?  I'm not so sure.

The Inn on the Green incident is a good example.  Having been caught up in it myself that day (thankfully, escaping unhurt), it's clear to me that - in the main - the perpetrators were kids out looking for trouble.  I did hear some time afterwards that the group knew each other not so much through Bristol Rovers but because most of them went to school together locally.  If that's true, I'm not sure that a pack of 20 or 30 feral schoolchavs getting together to inflict violence on an unsuspecting group of football fans says anything really about 'football' violence.  Just my take.

Guilty as charged but the point was that Town fans would not have allowed such incidents to happen or if they did justice would be served very quickly. There was a code of conduct that actually was there to protect the general public. This seems to have gone down the shitter.

That game was proper nawty.....it wasn't just kicking off, in the away pen, but all over the place.

Rovers kicked out the back the stand and were trying to get into the South Side by a kicking it in from the outside.....bit like some medieval siege. You see in the clip, that was the crush barriers being carried out...they were used like battering rams.

Classic Stratton Bank....the true Banker, would go to their spot, even though it was pissing with rain.

Their was a big hole in the stand, I walked past pissed afterwards and climbed through to soak up the vibe of a dark and empty CG....very strange.
