Title: This is England '86 Post by: Sussex on Monday, September 6, 2010, 19:37:11 Just a reminder that it starts tomorrow night c4 10pm. Get your sky+ on some series link action (it's 4 parts)
Loved the film so really looking forward to it. Short vid about it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/video/2010/sep/06/england-shane-meadows If you didn't like the film and aren't interested then why did you open the thread? Stupidcunt. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Monday, September 6, 2010, 19:44:15 I thought the film was alright. Don't really know anything about this to be quite honest though.
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: knifey spoony on Monday, September 6, 2010, 19:55:56 The film disappointed me. Nowhere near as good as his earlier efforts Dead Mans Shoes and A Room for Romeo Brass.
And the less said about his latest one, Somers Town, the better. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: BANGKOK RED on Monday, September 6, 2010, 20:18:25 If you didn't like the film and aren't interested then why did you open the thread? Stupidcunt. Because I thought it might have had clips of John Barnes playing, you facking muppet. Crap movie, great tunes. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Monday, September 6, 2010, 22:54:23 Argh forgot to Sky plus! to be honest if it's ultra violent I'm

Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Spy on Monday, September 6, 2010, 23:09:47 I don't think it'll have the same level of violent racism that the film had. I think it'll be really good.
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: oxford_fan on Monday, September 6, 2010, 23:59:38 Been anticipating this for weeks, should be good.
If it goes down well he's got a 1991 version in the pipeline too. When does the new Inbetweeners start? These are the only two shows I'll be watching on midweek tele. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: inthebutt on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 14:56:07 My partner said milky is in this spin off. Thought he got f00ked up in the film. :smugfu:

Unbelievable characters living implausible lives,I dont see the difference. Its Soap Opera for sniffy people, its not high art . I liked it but then I like Skins,Neighbours and Eastenders. I liked the first two series of Skins before they changed all the cast/characters. After that it went shit. One thing you have to admit is the acting is better in This Is England '86. And Kelly is fitter than Loll Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Crispy on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, 23:41:15 Shit compaired to the film, but combo's back :)
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: flammableBen on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, 23:52:20 Did anybody actually use the phrase "games console" to describe a commodore 64 in 1986? That jarred a bit with me, but I was only like 2 at the time.
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Miss Angry on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:16:53 that was fucking horrific Exactly what i said (to myself, out loud like an old woman). But i guess its in keeping with how the film was and as we know this shit does happen. Much better than the last two episodes Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: pauld on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:19:07 Did anybody actually use the phrase "games console" to describe a commodore 64 in 1986? That jarred a bit with me, but I was only like 2 at the time. No they didn't. We actually thought they were computers back then, even if they were only used for playing games. Ah, the joys of waiting 20 minutes for Donkey Kong to load from an audio cassetteTitle: Re: This is England '86 Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:19:50 This is England '86: Bad things happen when the piano music starts.
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: pauld on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:21:10 Got them all recorded, not watched any of them yet. I think I'll be having a big catch-up fest at the weekend so I'll join in the general mood of harrowedness then.
It'd better be bloody harrowing after all this build up. If I don't end up shell shocked/on the verge of tears I'll not be chuffed Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: sonicyouth on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:38:39 It might not be as good as the film but for me it's one of the best things I've seen on TV for a while.
I don't understand how Combo found Sean's house when it was mentioned a few minutes earlier that they'd moved. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:39:35 People have said that they weren't too bothered about the first two episodes, and in a way I agree that the pacing is maybe slightly off, especially with two major events happening at the end of the penultimate episode tonight, although one of them has had a lot of build up and is obviously the main story line.
In general though I think that it's made the transition from film to telly quite well, there's been enough stuff going on during the re-introduction of the characters in episodes one or two to stop it being just build up. It still has the same feel as the film, from what I remember anyway. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:40:21 It might not be as good as the film but for me it's one of the best things I've seen on TV for a while. I don't understand how Combo found Sean's house when it was mentioned a few minutes earlier that they'd moved. Yeah, I was wondering that, it seemed like a deliberate set up more than a mistake though, I'm sure it will be bought up. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Crispy on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:42:22 It might not be as good as the film but for me it's one of the best things I've seen on TV for a while. I don't understand how Combo found Sean's house when it was mentioned a few minutes earlier that they'd moved. :D Glad i wasnt the only person who didnt think this made sence. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: sonicyouth on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:43:56 I do agree that the first two episodes were a bit pedestrian and meandering but given the time elapsed since the film, it needed that to set things up properly. I like the fact it's not just a straight continuation of the film or even continues with the theme of the film, it gives it something else and the focus is split more between characters, the sub-plot with Meggy & Dogtanian is great.
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: RobertT on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 00:47:50 No they didn't. We actually thought they were computers back then, even if they were only used for playing games. Ah, the joys of waiting 20 minutes for Donkey Kong to load from an audio cassette Indeed. The term Console would have arrived thanks to Nintendo and Super Mario Bros finding it's way into the Uk along with the little upstart Sega. C64 was out and about with the ZX Spectrum and required you waiting an eternity for the tape to load up and then only with about a 50% success rate as it would crash about 5 clicks from the end on the counter. Amstrad had some horific green screen alternative - why? I've got to say I've found it all a little slow in comparison to the film, but I suppose that should be expected given it's a series. Just expected it to be a bit more up and at you sooner. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: jonny72 on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 01:23:14 Not sure when the term console was first used, but the NES and Master System weren't the first of their type in the UK. The Atari 2600 was popular here and there were various fixed game systems (mainly Pong derivatives) before that as well.
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 01:27:12 I remember friends having c64s and spectrums but don't remember console being used until the nes and master system starting hitting off.

Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Spy on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 08:51:15 I don't understand how Combo found Sean's house when it was mentioned a few minutes earlier that they'd moved. Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Fred Elliot on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, 00:01:43 Cant watch stuff like that.. didn't you find it entertaining Leefer ? Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: leefer on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, 00:15:17 didn't you find it entertaining Leefer ? Its sort of good......but violence like rape etc upsets me......dont watch a lot of TV anyway. Havn't watched a horror film for years.. Dont mean to sound dramatic but when i was in care there was a girl in there whos dad abused her....so things like this on TV bring back bad memories...that make me angry...which is stupid because i am an adult now..............but ware all different i spose Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, 00:32:05 Not sure that I was that keen on the pacing over 4 episodes, but still a brilliant mini-series, exceptional towards the end. I'm unsure on the ending point, but it was moving on to another story, and I think it might have detracted from it if they showed much more than necessary.
Title: Re: This is England '86 Post by: Spy on Friday, October 1, 2010, 23:47:18 I just met one of the blokes from This Is England 86 at a pub in Bristol. The bloke who gets beaten up by his dad. He was so cool. Really down to earth and friendly. :D
