Title: O'Neill quits Villa
Post by: pauld on Monday, August 9, 2010, 15:46:13
Been coming for a while this, but not great timing for Villa:

Presume this means Milner's off to Man City then

England job?  Don Fabio is a lame duck and should be put out of his misery.

If I was a Villa fan I'd be throwing all my toys out of the pram at the moment.

EDIT: Great shout reg, not that I want a reason to watch England again in the near future.

to be fair if I was a Villa fan, I would have considered ending it all long ago  :suicide:

One of my best mates is a Villa season ticket holder, he says it came very close to him quitting late on in the season so is not surprised at all.

Not sure who will take the job though as its a tough board to deal with.

"Should" is one thing. "Can afford to" is wholly another

Wilson to villa...

Seriously, if mark Hughes hadn't gone to fulham he would've gone there I think

Managing in some Arab state I remember reading somewhere, Dubia or Saudi somewhere.

Is it? Randy Lerner seems to be one of the better chairmen in football. O'neills done well at villa, but he's hit a glass ceiling I feel with regards to what they can actually achieve

Doubt it, Hodgson seems to have exceeded all expectations there already, just by persuading Gerrard and Torres to stay. Anyway, think they're too busy with the ownership issue anyway - if O'Neill didn't like working for Randy Lerner, no way he'd want to work for those two cowboys (no matter how temporarily)

So I have been told, Learner wouldn't back O'Neil as much as he asked for, basically saying that the money wasn't there, this was back in April.

The fans at Villa never really took to him either, lets see if Mr Learner dips his hand into his pocket to support the new manager with some funds that weren't as forthcoming to Martin.

Yes he made a couple of signings but nothing like he wanted or the fans wanted.

Too much expectation from the fans? Mr Learner keeping a tight hold of finances? players not willing to sign for them? possibly all the above.

O'Neil must have spent over £60m on transfers since he's been there.

Apart from the imminent sale of Milner, there have been constant rumours about Ashley Young,

which have resurfaced in the last few days.Perhaps O'Neill asked Lerner for reassurances that

Young wouldn't also be sold?

I am sure he has Si, sounds about right.

My understanding is that with the Milner deal,O'Neill although not wanting to sell, was prepared to
do a deal of cash plus 1 Man City player, but Lerner is only interested in a straight cash deal.

Bradley had a good World Cup. He wasn't afraid to change things and did pretty well tactically. He deserves a go somewhere biggish. It all depends on what Lerner wants to do though. He looks like he doesn't want to invest any more money so Bradley might be ideal.

Talk of them being after Mark Hughes, if true you have to feel for Fulham fans who could lose 2 managers before the season starts!!

Probably too big a step at this stage, but depending on who they appoint there may be a 'knock on' effect that involves him. Still, lets hope not eh ?

But Poyet is the best manager in the league.  I know this because a brighton fan said so.

Mind you why would he want to leave brighton.  They're going to be champions of europe in 5 years.

Gus Poyet quite simply is god, He is the best manager in England and quite possibly in Europe and Brighton are incredibly lucky to have him. But being a massive club they can attract the big names.

I am so jealous. But atleast we can take solice from the fact that Gus got his start in management at a tiny tin pot club like us before moving to a massive european club like Brighton.

From the Transfer Deadline BBC thread :

kopking88 on 606: "Gus Poyet Aston Villa bound? My mate works for his agents and Villa have made enquiries"
The Uruguayan has been a busy boy chasing players for Brighton on transfer deadline day... but stranger things have happened (Joe Kinnear at Newcastle for one)

 :D ;D
