Title: Avoiding interest
Post by: oxford_fan on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 14:01:14
I  am about £1,200 overdrawn with RBS, who are going to start charging for my overdraft which was previously 0%. I've taken out a Halifax Mastercard with 0% on balance transfers for 13 months, and a Barclaycard Platinum Visa with similar terms, but it turns out that neither of these will allow transfers from a current account on a Visa Debit card.

They also don't allow me to make a payment to my current account, and then balance transfer that over to the other credit card, achieving the 0% rate.

Does anyone know a way I can get around this? I want to pay about £2,500 into my RBS current account so that I've got enough cash to last me for the summer, when I start a new job and should be able to clear these debts within a couple of months (for now I am not earning).

Any help is much appreciated.

Do you get 0% on purchases on the credit card?

Just pay of the debt, it's not your money.

I can confirm this. If you sign up through amazon you get an amazon gft card of £10 for every £1000 you spend too.

I think if he had the cash to do this straight out he probably would.  I'm going to guess by your tone that you have no loans, no debts, no money on credit cards and no mortgage?

No problem - I only know because I myself am juggling accounts during a 'career transition' period - I just wish my debt was £1,200!!

(+ £16,000 to the Student Loans Co.!)

This is why I'm about to turn 25 and still living at home for at least another year, should hopefully be debt free in 2 yrs.
