Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Batch on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 16:07:00 Most pubs are owned by the brewery. The Brewery charges a fair what for the leasehold/equipment, etc. During the recession its easier/chepaer to buy beer from the supermarket.
All in all I don't think most pubs would survive on cheper prices. The extra people brought it wouldn't be enough. Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 16:09:03 Here comes Gazza! ;)

The smoking ban came in hit pubs hard but cheap booze in supermarkets did so even more. Its been done to death on here. The traditional pub isnt fashionable anymore, People think I can smoke at home and drink and its cheaper? Plus cunts kicking fuck out of each other in town puts people off. Rising cost of living and credit crunch as well contributes. First thing you cut back is going out. People communicate online now etc so dont really need to go out to catch up on the latest chat. Loads of factors. Hence why pubs are now full of food and kids running around. Eventually the british pub will be like an american bar and effectively be restaurants which cater to families! We shall go tomorrow and drink their excellent beer. Quite right. I go to pubs less than I used to. But when I do go, I'll never waste an evening/lunchtime now in a bad one. The good pubs will survive. A lot of the ropey ones will not. Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Spy on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 16:30:51 I was talking about this to my housemate earlier. 2 litres of strongbox at the supermarket was about £2.68. A pint of the same at the pub would be an average if £3 roughly. No wonder people aren't going to the pub! It's not their fault tho they're struggling, the government are fucking them over with tax.
Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 16:38:04 I agree that taxes on the pub trade are ridiculously high...but also think that some people overlook what you're paying for when you go to the pub.
If your objective is simply to get hammered as cheaply as possible then, fine, you can sit at home with 6 tins of Special Brew in front of the TV. But for me, that would be a crap evening. The price of your pint in a good pub pays for the beer itself (obviously), the tax on the beer (regrettably), the pleasure of getting out of the house, the wages of the bar staff, the atmosphere, the chance to bump in to other people you might want to talk to etc. etc. You can't simply compare the two on cost alone. It's no different really to paying for a pizza in a restaurant vs eating one out of the freezer at home. Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: The Grim Reaper on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 18:24:54 Always Sir Dans for me. Cheap drinks, and if your a smoker it caters quite well for you. A lot of my friends smoke and they all agree the smoking ban has NOT stopped them going out. Just the general state of the ecomomy means your average punter has less spare cash at the end of the month.
Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Nijholts Nuts on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 18:34:55 In my favourite pub in Brighton they charged me about £3.50 for a pint, which I think you'll agree is fucking disgraceful.

Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: flammableBen on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 19:06:51 In terms of prices round old town, I earn less than two pints an hour. Which means I can drink beer in the pub faster than I can earn it.
Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Talk Talk on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 20:03:38 12bar prices take the piss, end of. Indeed. It is better to go and get tanked up somewhere close by like the Glue Pot before hand. Nicer beer and much cheaper. Just have one in 12 Bar while you are watching the gig and then retire back for a few more after. Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: LucienSanchez on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 20:19:17 The Greyhound is directly opposite and is a) cheaper, and b) a far better pub than the 12 Bar. In fact there is no reason to go to the 12 Bar unless you really want to see the band who are on. It's not even open on a Saturday lunchtime, for fucks sake

Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 20:50:06 It's not the nicest of pubs. I lived near it for a couple of years and used to go there a fair bit. Still pop in there a couple of times a month, usually hit up the Graps and Westcott Place WMC on a mini pub crawl before goingg to a mates in Read Street for poker. The regulars look a bit nasty, but i've never felt uncomfortable, or seen any trouble there. Plus there is a good jukebox and cheap pool table Title: Re: Price of drinks when going out Post by: Talk Talk on Monday, July 19, 2010, 20:46:10 It was definitely the Greyhound, I drove past it on Saturday.
