Title: Handing in my notice Post by: chalkies_shorts on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 23:17:48 Later on today I shall be handing in my notice after 10 years at Nationwide. Its not the same company I joined. I'm setting up my own company. Its scary but I can't just sit there pulling in a wage when I hate every minute. I've got a hefty mortgage, 3 kids, STFC and a beer gut to support so its got to wok out.
Its a bit obscure but if anyone wants a statistician / MI guy primarily HR then PM me. Even more obscure but if someone would like any service profit chain analysis done then I'm your man. Red Deer Analytics Ltd will be the name. If anyone is a graphic designer / printer then pm me as I need to get my logo / stationery up to date including a master PowerPoint prsentation. I've got a website guy lined up. Apologies fior contaminating this space but I'm drunk and a little bit emotional right now. Tomorrow promises to be fun. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: wiggy on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 23:20:47 Jeez - good luck fella.
Your story sounds much like mine only I am not brave enough to do what you are doing. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Barry Scott on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 23:20:55 :beers:
Fucking well done chalky. You've made the right choice. More people should do what you've just done. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Dr Pierre Chang on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 23:22:09 Good luck mate.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: chalkies_shorts on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 23:28:44 Cheers Barry. From a financial point of view, its potentail suicide. From an ethical / moral point of view I need to do it. Its potentailly small fry good news to some locals.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: chalkies_shorts on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 23:32:55 Jeez - good luck fella. Brave or stupid will remain to be seen. Basically, if I'm not earning in 3 months I'm fucked. Its shit or bust and launching now is not ideal but hey ho. If it goes tits up would you like to adopt one of my children?Your story sounds much like mine only I am not brave enough to do what you are doing. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: pauld on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 00:02:09 Blimey, balls of steel chalkie. Very best of luck to you, hope it works out
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: mrOG on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 06:03:33 Fair play to you, Chalkies. I'm at NW (been there a bit longer), but it is not a nice place to work. Immediate team is still cool, but other than that..........
Only thing keeping me there are 2 small kids (3 and 3 months), otherwise I would have fucked off long ago and gone contracting. Hope that it goes well - echoing the sentiments of others, you are a brave soul - best of luck. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: herthab on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 06:13:28 I did a similar(ish) thing when I packed up a relatively decent job in my 30's to go back to full time education. As you say it is financially precarious to do (Especially in the current climate) but ultimately it was the best thing I've ever done. I didn't do it for a better wage, or career progression, more because the thought of going into my old job every morning was seriously beginning to fuck with my head!
Good luck to you. I hope it works out. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 06:46:10 Must be the week for it! I handed in my notice at my Events job on Monday!
Scary innit Chalky!! Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 07:03:46 All the best Chalkie.
I have an ambition to work for myself, but at the moment I don't even have a clue what I want to do or what service I could offer so I wouldn't exactly make a lot (or any) money :) Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 07:05:30 Have you been doing 'private' work on the side to build a client base, or is it just handing in your notice then seeing what happens? Hope its not the latter, as with those comittments it's a huge risk if you haven't.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Batch on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 08:08:44 Good luck Chalkie.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Nijholts Nuts on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 08:58:10 Good Luck!! All the breast.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Ginginho on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 09:02:01 Fair play to you, sounds scary and exciting and I hope it works out.
Remember: You can't spell Analytics without Anal. Perhaps that could be your company slogan. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Peter Venkman on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 09:05:20 WTG Chalkie, go for it and dont regret it.
Its the future! Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Doore on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 11:05:25 Chalkie, I seem to disagree with almost everything you say on here - but I take my hat off to you, that's a very brave thing you're doing, and I wish you the very best of luck.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Crispy on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 11:19:29 Best of luck. Im Far from a graphic designer, but i do know how to use photoshop if you need help with anything on there.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: LucienSanchez on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 11:46:36 NW is pants... but I'm back there until September when I give up my career to go and get a history degree, just for the hell of it.
Good luck sir... Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: @MacPhlea on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 13:38:00 Fair play mate, I got made redundant in January and took some time out to finish the extension on my house and consider my options. I have a lot of pharma manufacturing operation experience linked in with IT/system integration knowledge and working directly for another employer didn't appeal and, having been fucked around by agency placing adverts for roles that didn't exist, decided to go it alone.
I now have work coming in from both the UK and Ireland from major corporates (Pepsi, Merck, GSK) and have teamed up with two other guys in Ireland who are experts in Project management and System automation (SCADA. PLC etc). As a result we are able to offer a complete service to any industry loking to streamline systems through integration and automation. Because we work with the business to understand their complete needs we are often asked to provide services outside our standard offering and usually refer these to third parties that specialise in those area's - it would be god to understand more about what you are offering so if anything comes up I can give you the nod - PM me your email address or connect to me on linkedin... http://uk.linkedin.com/in/rossiterpj and I'll keep you on file Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: One F In Fitton on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 15:06:10 I wish you (and JFW, for that matter) the very best of luck, and prosperity.
It seems that if more people were to set up their own business (and obviously make a success of it), then the country would get back on its' feet more rapidly and we would all benefit as a consequence. Sounds simple doesn't it, but there are obviously massive factors stopping people from taking the plunge. I also fall into the 'would-love-to-be-my-own-boss-but-currently-wouldn't-know-where-to-start' category. I've built up a fair bit of experience in some key areas but I would do anything (apart from the obvious) - as long as I'm; a) my own boss, and b) earning a decent living........I really wouldn't care what it was - as long as a) & b) are happening then I'm fucking delirious. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: chalkies_shorts on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 15:41:02 Thanks to you all and good luck JFW.
Well I did the deed today and in 8 - 10 weeks time I'll be on my own. Now I'd better get busy and start telling people I'm available for hire. No doubt there will be some late night pissed postings updating my situation. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 16:04:25 Thanks Chalkie - although you much more brave than me - I still have my lifeguarding to back me up!
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: woolster on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 17:01:19 i left a 35k job to go back to being self employed, yes it was a bit scarey at first but have never looked back, IMO if you aint happy doing something why bother doing it, good luck mate
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 17:04:13 good luck mate, I have been running my own business for 15 years, when things are going well make sure you put something aside because there will be bleak times.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Freddies Ferret on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 17:06:28 good luck mate, be interested to hear updates on how it is going
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: One F In Fitton on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 20:01:41 Thanks Chalkie - although you much more brave than me - I still have my lifeguarding to back me up! Oh don't worry about thanking me then  Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: LucienSanchez on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 21:36:01 Thanks Chalkie - although you much more brave than me - I still have my lifeguarding to back me up! What are you going to be doing, Chaz? Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Nemo on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 21:40:37 We should have a proper TEF trades directory. The Red Pages or something. I'm sure we all have unique and valuable skills. Mostly involving alchohol.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: sonicyouth on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 21:43:01 i have no unique or valuable skills...which i suppose makes me unique at least

I've been at Nationwide for 10 years also and I know what you mean about how things have changed. I've been through 3 major restructures in the last 3 years and although I've kept my job each time, lots of friends have mine haven't and some of them were treated quite poorly through the whole redundancy thing.
Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 09:38:09 Only just seen this - fair play to you.
My contract has recently changed so I have a two month notice period, if I get sent away for work in another lengthy period I plan to hand in my notice there and then. But I'd be confident of getting something lined up in that time, even if it was temp work on similar pay to what I'm earning now. I don't think I'd have the balls to have too much uncertainty over the future, I hope it works out. Title: Re: Handing in my notice Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 09:45:49 We should have a proper TEF trades directory. The Red Pages or something. I'm sure we all have unique and valuable skills. Mostly involving alchohol. That's actually quite a good idea! Oh and Thanks one F in Fitton And LS going back into leisure hopefully mostly teaching kids health & fitness classes!
