Title: Eminem
Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Saturday, July 10, 2010, 20:40:22
Not everyones cup of tea obviously and judging by alot of music that gets posted here i doubt many on here like his stuff .

Anyway i got his new album last week and must admit it's probably some of his best work he has done.

Any other Eminem fans?

Not a huge fan, but I can tell he's quite good at something I don't particularly enjoy.

Like Tiger Woods or something.

I think I've listened to him, but only one track, Mocking Bird, might be totally wrong about that because I'm an old git.

After that track didn't really want to hear any more.

Not a fan but I think he is one of the most important artists of the last 20 - 30 years.

arriba - give me some names of others you feel have changed the face of music in the last 20-30 years. This guy took "black musc" and gave it to us honkeys - not forgetting some pretty controversial lyrics.

i can't think of any,but in no way think enema is anywhere near that status.
beastie boys did what he did years ago.

Brilliant album, particularly his collaberations with female artists for some of the songs. Back to his best after the disappointing Relapse album.

absolutely true, eminem often mentions the beastie boys as his most important influence because they showed that white hip hop could sell. both are great though.

i like eminem's demo album, infinite, sounds very different to his other stuff. new stuff is a bit self indulgent and cheesy, but still good.

You don't have to like it for it to be considered important, or even good.

I reckon he's allright myself, just not my cup of tea.

I got a couple of his tracks on my ipod, might try his new album, cheers.

Eminem is a fucking genius. He took a bit of a nosedive on Encore, some funny tunes on there, but his more serious stuff has always been, edgier and generally alot better.

Still haven't heard the new album, but I'll definitely get it, judging by other Eminem fans responses.

Beastie Boys didn't hit the mainstream anywhere near as much as Eminem has and aren't as good lyrically either.

Eminem has done more for rap music than any other artist in the sense that he was the first white rapper with real lyrical talent which made hip hop accessible to everybody, ie the white middle classes, which = $$$$$ and rap music now a common place in the Top 40, etc.

Personally I think he is brilliant though the Slim Shady Lp and Marshall Mathers Lp are by far the best albums. To be honest they have been getting steadily worse each album since then but so far I am really liking the new one so hopefully he's back on the up

There's no doubt that Eminem has sold more records and writes a little better, but the Beastie Boys did it before him (1986 to Eminem's 1999) so they have to be recognised as the pioneers in that respect - there is no finer example of bringing hip hop to the white middle classes than the Beasties, who are white, middle class, Jewish!

Very similar to Ginginho - to me 90% of rap just sounds the same, with everyone seemingly just copying those that have gone before them, and are scared to try anything different. I'm sure there are other examples - I'm very happy to admit that rap isn't a genre that I know too much about, because like I said, most of it is drivel.

Eminem is one of the innovative few, and was brave enough to offer something a little outside the box, thus making him stand out and actually be worth listening to. And he comes across as a genuine, humble & likeable bloke - good on him.

His set at T in the park was delayed by 45 minutes as he wasn't willing to walk 20 yards on muddy ground to get his trainers dirty. They had to hire a bus to pick him up to drive him the small distance to the stage.

Ersehole.

Completely agree - love this album and not normally a massive fan of rap in general.

You're recommending rap music to people who don't like rap music?  I would suggest they would be better off trying music of another genre.

"Hey, vegetarian, would you like some sausages?"

I was blown away by the track Stay Wide Awake off the Relapse album. Very dark and he seemed back on top form lyrically and with the way he was flowing.

Haven't heard that latest album properly yet. Will have to give it a proper listen.

Cheers John - I'll do that..........but only if you first hurl a monumental blast of abuse at me, which must include THE most offensive words that you can think of.

ps Over the years I also liked Tone Loc, Beastie Boys, Ice T (I always remember "L.G.B-N.A.F.T"), Cypress Hill........maybe I like rap/hip-hop more than I thought......it's just that there's so much shit about that drag it down for me.

I've never got this "bringing hip hop to the white middle classes" argument. Growing up in the 80's I didn't need white rap artists to sell the music to me and I doubt the vast majority of people didn't either - none of my mates did. I wasn't one of the cool hip kids either, just in to music and the artists skin colour didn't matter.

Though I'm sure Eminem did have a major effect on making rap music ok for the upper classes to listen to, but it wasn't just his skin colour that did that - his music and lyrics were a major part of it.
