Title: Your most memorable match....
Post by: Nijholts Nuts on Sunday, April 11, 2010, 03:25:22
Ive supported Town since the old 92/93 Season, through Malpas and Wilson and from Gorman to Sturrock.
However,  out of all the games Ive been to, tmy most vivid was the game at Rovers (Goodnight Irene, you bitch  :twat: ). The one where a lot of innocent Town fans gt fooked over at the Inn on the Green. That was a bad day.
BUT, my favourite game was my first ever Town match. It was when we played the Hammers at Upton Park when we were in the Premiership. We drew 0-0, and I think it was our second point of that season.

Always remember my first game. Ross McLaren scored the winner in extra-time.

Didn't get to many games during the Prem due to being at uni. That 2-2 with United was a good one.  and the normal beating of Oxford at the County Ground, etc. I wasn't even at the Peterborough game, I was playing and travelling back from the match when Invincibile scored. I think I lost it for a bit in the car, I had three very white passengers in the car.

The bad ones stand out too.  Cheltenham away. Stevenage. Standing on the bank one cold January and being told "there was no chance of the game being called off" only for the game to get called off 10 mins into the second half.

Swindon Town 4-3 Leicester City.

Predictable, sure, but everything about the day was great.

I don't know about all time favourite/most memorable match, but as an away game beating Stoke 2-1 on the 1st game at the Britannia. 1-0 down, Scott Leitch (awesome player) acrobatically clearing a certain Stoke goal off the line at 1-0. Then us scoring 2 in a minute late on to win it. Fantastic day!

There are also the obvious games, such as the play off finals & turbo (Steve Robinson) getting two at our last visit to the Manor.

Mine will always be the League Cup Quarter-Final Replay in December 1979 when we beat the Arse 4-3 AET.

It was my 16th birthday, and for that reason tops anything else for me.

Ironically we drew 2-2 away to Liverpool in the Premier League season on my 30th, although this was slightly tainted by the fact that we should have won

Tranmere play-off game away (can't remember the score on the night)

3-2 Trannies (5-4 on aggregate) I think for the amazing game and atmosphere, combined with the reaction of the Tranmere fans afterwards, that is possibly my most memorable game as well.

Also right up there is Sunderland (H) 3-1 AET in the Milk Cup in 1985 which also, spookily enough led to a 5-4 aggregate victory ??? One of the great nights.

Arsenal 1979,home and away.
Swansea away the same season on boxing day.
Liverpool away in the prem.
From my much younger days i remember Everton home and away.
Last week at Leeds was in my top ten

Also Wolves away in 1979 although the manner of defeat abit like the Bolton semi final left a bad taste.

That was a memorable game, along with the win in the next round against Sheffield Wed 1-0, who were 3rd in the old first div (Prem now), and had ben Man U a few days earlier.

Of course in the late 80's we had some great cup games at the CG. Here are a few of them :

Swindon 3 Pompey 1 LC '87
Swindon 4 Chelsea 0 Simod Cup '88
Swindon 2 Norwich 0 Simod Cup '88
Swindon 3 Bolton 3 LC '89
Swindon 2 Bolton 1 AET LC '89
Swindon 4 Norwich 1 Simod Cup '90

Great league games at the CG :

Swindon 4 Chester 2 '86
Swindon 6 Stoke 0 '89
Swindon 4 Blackburn 3 '89
Swindon 3 Lids 2 '90
Swindon 5 Leicester 2 '91
Swindon 5 Sunderland 3 '91
Swindon 4 Cambridge 1 '92
Swindon 1 QPR 0 '92
Swindon 6 Huddersfield 0 '96
Swindon 1 Pox 0 '96 (The Joey Wingebag return game)
Swindon 2 Man City 0 '96
Swindon 3 Brum 1 '97
Swindon 2 Huddersfield 0 '00
Swindon 2 Peterborough 1 '01
Swindon 3 Barnsley 1 '02
Swindon 5 Notts County 0 '03

I'd have to go with that over the final against Leicester. It was non stop up and down and the second half especially was a non-stop heart attack, my favourite bit was a bloke dressed as a scouser (shell suit, fake moustache and curly wig) climbing up on a wall and telling everyone to 'calm down' in a suitably scouse accent.

Though the recent Leeds game rates pretty highly for me as well.

Talking of games with Fog, do any of you remember the game at home to Bradford which was eventually abandoned with us 3-0 up>

They'd had a player sent off before the ref took the players off because of fog. After about 10-15 mins they came back on as the fog had cleared a bit, and someone I was with reckoned that Bradford had come back on with 11 players, but it was so foggy that you couldn't really tell. :)

When the game was re-played we were 2-0 up in next to no time, but eventually drew 2-2. :(

I was at both of those games..how I remember it is going for my half time piss and everything was normal. When I came back the fog had come down like a blanket out of nowhere, You could hardly see the North Stand (I was in the old Shrivvy Road Stand) The game had to be called off but what a piss off! The replayed game as you say finished 2-2 and the equalising goal came very, very late in the game. Roy Wegerle scored one of our goals I think.

my dad took me to my first ever game against Oxford at home in 1995 which ill always remember.

but my most memorable has to be our 2-0 win against Oxford at the Manor in 2001, TURBO!

other great games that will stick in the memory will have to be our doubles over Southampton and Leeds this season home and away.

The ref for the fog game was our good friend Mr Elleray....I've seen a bit of fog in my time, but think that was the densest ever...you could hardly see the end of your hand....another memorable fog game, was Bormuff away in 95/96...the game was no problem, but it was the journey back, where you could barely make out the lights of the car in front..well scary.

I don't think anything will ever top Swindon 4-3 Leicester.  The draw at Blackpool a few years later where we won promotion back to Div 2 was pretty special as well; nothing special about the game itself, but the weekend up in Blackpool was immense.  You couldn't move for Swindon shirts.

Other games that come to mind are the 1-0 win vs QPR in Nov 1993 (our first win of the Premiership season...I spent most of the game hyperventilating on the Stratton Bank) and the away win at QPR on the final day of that season.  Anyone who was there, dressed in black and walking behind the coffin through Shepherd's Bush before the game will know what I'm talking about.  That rates as one of the best away days I can remember.

More recently, Danny's goal vs Peterborough that kept us in Div 3 was very special.  And Brentford (A) this season...perfect football day out.

Ooh, yes I remember this one well - one of the first "big" games that I saw. My main memory of this game is the referee (Lester Shapter if I recall correctly who really didn't like us) making a poor decision, and Lou Macari running on to the pitch to argue with him. When the ref told him to get off and pointed towards the dugout, Lou smacked his arm down & carried on arguing and pointing a finger in his face. Quality management that would probably result in a ban these days.

Most of my favourite games have already been mentioned

Birmingham 6-4
Leicester 4-3
Newcastle 2-1 (promotion season - Hoddle injured very late before the game, the much-criticised Viveash comes in and plays a stormer)
QPR H & A in prem season, our first H & A wins
Leeds A in cup (jammy bastards, Robinson header)

And a couple of random ones
Boston A Mickey Mouse Cup 2002 ish?. Dont go to too many away games but was working fairly close by and made the effort. Was the smallest away crowd I've ever been part of
Aldershot A 1982ish. Crowd trouble broke out towards end of 1st half, jumped the barrier and spent the rest of the game standing next to the dugout smelling the smoke from Kevin Morris's pipe

7-1 Loss to Forest is memorable for the wrong reasons. I think Hartlepool Away in L2 was a memorable one as way. Only for the fact there was a renewed wave of optomism and Brezovans saves etc. Leeds away, Gurney's Freekick sheer Class!!

A right good stuffing can be memorable though....the worst I've seen at the CG, was losing 0-6 to Ipswich in 99....it was the biggest home defeat I'd seen since we got thumped by Newcastle 1-6 in 64.

That day everything they shot seemed to go in, and we seemed a bit short of defenders, the usually reliable Ken McPherson missing.  We went down.

The Ipswich game, Craig Taylor got sent off after about 5 mins for deliberate handball. What a bag of dung we had on the pitch that day...I sat up in the DRS, in a sort of stunned disbelief...the team that day

Glass in goal....then 6 defenders....Linton, Reeves, Taylor, Hall, Borrows, Sol Davis....midfield Booby Howe and Ty Gooden, Iffy and Shane fucking Bradley up front.

The amazing thing was we went to Uddersfield on the Bank Holiday Monday won and stayed up..

The police part isn't really football related.
Ended up watching the match at home as I couldn't get a ticket. Had the tv going through the stereo at full volume so it was fucking loud. About 10mins after the end of the match my housemate's Spanish girlfriend found some texts on his phone that she didn't much appreciate. Being Spanish she started beating the shit out of him with anything that came to hand (mainly her stiletto).. the fight spilled out onto the street and then calmed down a bit and everyone moved back inside. 30mins later the door was knocked and I went to answer. I could see they were coppers through the front door window and assumed they'd come because of the (football) noise.. I prepared my apology in my head and answered the door.. the copper bundled me back through the door and pinned me face first to the wall by back of the head and began arresting me for domestic violence. Took them a while to believe it wasn't me. Took them even longer to believe that it was the girlfriend who was being violent. In the end the WPC consoled her and they all left. Obviously no fucking apology was forthcoming. Wankers.

Apart from 4 - 3 at Wembley;

2- 4 away at Oxford (1990). We were two nil down after 5 mins, but the Town came back to win! Amazing away support that day - a real crush getting out down that lane at the end (what was the name of the lane behind the away end at Ox?)....
Vid highlights for those who are interested!

Watford away in 1993 when we won 4 - 0 was great too. We outsung the home crowd for entire 90 mins!

At CG, I loved the early 90's games v Leicester. There was a real edge to those games. My fav was when we had to win to avoid relegation. Fraser Digby saved a penalty and we won 5-3 I think. I was in the Shrivenham Road and the atmosphere was wicked! Great days....

When was that game when we beat the Scum of the Pox variety in the nid 90's. Memorable cos the crowd managed to wind Beauchump up to the extent that he got himself sent off.

Other memories are beating Fulham 5-0 (or 5-1) complete with Bobby moore, Marsh, Best et al, Winning at Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 in the early 70's when I went mental at our first goal only to realise I was in the home end & of course the win other Leicester at wembley, & the home game against Sunderland in that season when I was stood on the Stratton Bank, in line with hoddles magnificent goal

Eh?? I certainly remember a game were crowd and players combined magnificently to wind Beauchamp up like I have never seen before or since. McMahon was manager and Horlock scored in a 1-0 win. I have no recollection of a sending off though. I even watched it on You Tube recently. I do forget things though so it's possible I'm wrong. ???

It was hugely funny the way Bumchump, was roughed up by Gary Elkins, watching the vid clip, you don't see it....Elkins of course had been schooled in the dark arts at Wimbledon.

Wingebag got subbed in that game. Got to say, it was one of the best ref displays ever by Gurnam Singh, who virtually let the Swindon players 'stick the boot in', and he just played on.

Great day that and a mental atmosphere from us. I used to love that away terrace at Watford, the accoustics were fucking lovely, always made loads of noise.

Yeah and the walk through the allotments, which were always in better nick than the pitch.

Oddly the game that really sticks in my mind is one that I didn't even go to, but watched on TV. Not only that but it was a 0-0 draw.

Sunday game away to Newcastle during the 92/93 season Hoddle's side against Keegan's.

Kerslake and Hazard were fucking brilliant.

Easily the best scoreless draw I've ever seen.

It will probably be the 6-4 game at Birmingham and remember turning to my mate at 4-1 thinking get a goal and we might get get something. Shaun Taylor sealed legend status in that game by going off with a cut head, we go 2-0 down and he comes on and heads a goal to bring it back to 2-1. Hoddle and Hazard took complete charge of the game from 4-1 and we destroyed them.

Other memorable ones will be the Gillingham play off games, Blackburn play off away, Liverpool away in the Premiership and the 3-1 win at QPR at our last Premier League game. Must have been one of the best relegation parties ever and seeing Swindon fans carrying a black homemade coffin down Sheppards Bush High Street live long in the memory and a National Newspaper report on the Monday making reference to the amount of cider we must have consumed.

Think the two Leeds games this season will live long in the memory and for a memorable single moment it might well be Danny Invincibile's injury time winner against Posh to keep us up in 2001

2 people have mentioned that QPR was our last Premier League game, I always thought it was the 0-5 defeat at home to Leeds which brought up our 100 goals conceded?

You are correct sir. Perhaps they meant either 'away game' , or 'win'

Having not been to loads of games it would have to be the away cup game at Elland Road that Paul Robinson scored at. Even though we lost that game had everything and the atmosphere from the Town fans that night was immense.

4-3 win over Arsenal
The 6-4 win at Birmingham
4-3 over Leicester
1-1 at Highbury (twice) and 1-1 at White Hart Lane
6-0 over Stoke

First game in the Intel/Don Rogers - 2-0? v Port Vale
2-0 win over Colchester where I froze to death on the Stratton Bank in the cold icy rain
2-2 v Man United (the Cantona stamp)

My clearest memory of that game was the ovation we gave Calderwood as he swapped ends at the start of the game.  Along with the rest of the Spurs back line, he had to jog down to the end of the ground that held the 4,000 odd Swindon fans.  We just about lifted the roof with 'Ooh, Colin, Colin...' and, I have to admit, there was a bit of a lump in my throat at that point.

West Ham 1:1 Swindon, Eastoe

Just walking up to the ground and a bystander said, "What's going on, there were less 'ere last week for Liverpool".

By today's refereeing standards, West Ham would have had one or two sent off.

When we one the league:

Chesterfield away. Fell down the terrace when we scored and ripped me new 501s!  >:(

Blackpool away (weekend) - absolutely bolloxed. There was a pub opposite the Yates North which was cracking then moved down the road to a pub open till 2am (that was late then!!) and sang my heart with fellow reds including the skins and boneheads!

Tranmere away - was it cup quater or play off semi? - anyway that was a great night. Thought it was gonna kick off when they came on the pitch, but they wanted to exchange scarfs !!! Honest!

Wovers away (Bath) - great football.

Those are the ones I can remember through the alcoholic haze!  :beers:

Was only a young lad at that game, was that when Tommy Taylor "clotheslined" Trevor Anderson when clean through?

Play-offs in '87 :

Wigan 2 Town 3 (2-0 down after 20 mins, we then scored 3 in the last 20 !!)
Town 2 Pikeys 1 (The Charle Henry winner...which took us to a replay)
Town 2 Pikeys 0 (Steve White double sends us up at Selhurst Park)
