Title: Doctor Who
Post by: flammableBen on Friday, April 2, 2010, 00:51:39
Have to say I'm excited. Moffatt is a brilliant writer, and the more clips I see of the new guy, the more he reminds me of Troughton.

Not holding much hope for the first episode because it's always going to be difficult. Looking forward to WW2 Daleks with Churchhill.

I Fucking love doctor who.

I read an article in one of the TV guides and Moffat says "There's a big twist to come - don't assume you know everything and don't assume you've understood everything that you've seen". Which is kind of what I was expecting, Moffat is pretty clever with his scripts filling them with twists and turns you weren't expecting - Coupling is a great example of this.

Liked Christopher Ecclestone, thought David Tennant was superb, just hope Smith will live up to my expectations.  Really excited that we have a new series this year.

Brilliant.

I think Dr. Who sucks! (Helmet on). The only good point was and still remains Billie Piper.

I agree about the new assistant shes great.

I thought it was a great set up episode and Matt Smith seems an able replacement, infact he feels like "The Doctor" already.

I was expecting much less for an introduction episode. It pissed all over Rose and whatever Tennant's one was (Christmas Invasion?).

The failed fairy tale of Amelia Pond opening was a wonderful bit of telly.

Even the this world is protected with all the doctor pictures seemed to fit ok, which is hard to do.

Fucking loved it.

I mean really? It's a British Show that knocks out 13 episodes a year (mostly). The one today was spectacular and in a way more Douglas Adams than when he was script writer.

I love Dr Who and this first episode was superb. I was quite concerned when I saw who was to be the next Dr Who but he nailed it. I loved it when he told the young Amelia "you're Scottish fry me something".
I thuoght some of his facial manerisms reminded me of Michael Palin in Life of Brian.
First impressions are really positive.
Tom Baker is still the best Doctor.

i'm an intermitant Who viewer. my nephews, sister and bro-in-law are mad on it. my youngest nephew is 5, he's just had a birthday and got a great chunk of money, which he's saving for the new Who toys.

I thoroughly enjoyed that episode. and the assistant is fit. and looks mucky in a police outfit.

You have terrible terrible tastes.

Todays was pretty good again. It seemed a bit short, but then I think it's the first non-extra-long episode we've had for ages. I liked the setting. Smith doctor is becoming more and more brilliant as he settles into his doctor.

That seemed to be over way too quickly. I think they need to move to hour long episodes or make more two parters. That felt like a really promising premise and set up spunked away before it had any chance to build any real at tension.

Yeah, there was a lot of unrealised stuff their. They didn't do much with the little girl, the little boy or the demon headmaster. Don't think it would have stretched to two episodes, but the was more there than fitted the time. It felt a bit like there was a penultimate act cut out. The starwars/alice in wonderland/neverwhere sort of setting was pretty cool though.

Nice that they did a link to the next episode at the end with Winston giving the doctor a call.

Not anti-populist at all.  In fact, I quite despise anti-populism - things are usually popular for a reason.  i'm actually as middle of the road as they come - I'm a bloke who likes football, a few beers, a curry, The Beatles and Oasis.

I just don't like Doctor Who.  Or Harry Potter.  The cunts.

I watched most of the Tenant years - the good lady likes it.  Admittedly I've not seen the new boy in action, through a lack of interest and the lady getting distracted.

I read the first three Potters, then gave up.  It just didn't seem to grab me like the His Dark Materials trilogy did.  I've sat through all of the films, which seem to entertain for a while and then drift off again.  Hey ho.

Title: Re: Doctor Who

3/7 on potter is fair enough, although they generally get better the further you get.

most ish of the tennant years is fuck all mate.

bits of 4 years out of 47 or so?

Did you watch Blink? That was good. The Family of Blood/other bit 2 parter was good. All the specials were a bit silly.

Tennant was fun but not exactly a good representation of Doctor Who on the whole.

I've seen some of the old Doctor Who - I thought we were talking about the new stuff.  I still stay in the same place though, its never really grabbed me.  Funnily enough though, I absolutely loved Torchwood.

Jesus christ, you have no taste. Although the last mini series of torchwood was good.

Fair enough if it doesn't grab you. Just you always come across so against people watching it, always in favour of the silly "This is shit why bother" comments. Do you do that for everything that doesn't grab you?

Title: Re: Doctor Who
Post by: jonny72 on Sunday, April 11, 2010, 01:27:50
Did you watch Blink?

Scariest thing I've ever seen that was, especially the bit at the end.

Good start to the new series so far, I reckon it will be the best ever with Moffat in charge.

I'm hoping we'll be seeing the doctors daughter making another appearance or two, especially if they can work in a bit of lesbian action with the new assistant. Same for Captain Jack, though a new proper series of Torchwood would be even better.

It did feel like it could have done with the full hour. But I'm liking the new Doctor so far, even though I didn't think I would. But then I didn't think I'd like David Tennant either. I should trust them to get it right more. Would still have liked John Simm to get the part though

Watched it this morning. Thought it was quite good. A little bit Terry Pratchett like I thought with the Spacewhale being a bit like Great A'Tuin. Love Smith's acting and sarcasm. Good interaction with the Ginger girl. Agree though that it was over before it started. Would we want to go back to the 13 part episodes of the 70s and 80s though?

Title: Re: Doctor Who

i think this must have been the first "normal" length episode for ages, i felt it came to an abrupt halt as well.

as much as i did enjoy tennant's doctor, it's good to finally put him in the past - his departure was so long and drawn out.

Dream ones are always difficult - they always go a bit deus ex machina. Tonights was no exception but the zombie gimmers with flymos was a nice touch.

Title: Re: Doctor Who
Post by: flammableBen on Monday, May 17, 2010, 22:40:11
I thought it was a top episode. Infact the entire series has been pretty fucking brilliant so far, the Dalek episode possibly being the only weak link, and that wasn't that bad.

Agree with Sir Orange about dreams and deus ex machina. Although I thought the reveal of who the badguy was, was worth the pay off of random dream crystals, and at least the former did have a bit of forshadow.

"There's only one other person who hates me as much as you" (or whatever the line was), becomes quite poignant looking back at the episode.

The old deus ex machina is something that Who's always suffered from though, especially back in the days of randomly inserted cliff hangers to split up the old 3 - 6 parters. Even compared to the rest of new who, this season has generaly seen a movement towards Chekhov's gun going off all over amy's tits. Sorry lost the literary criticism train of thought there.

Speaking of which there's an event in the library....15th November.  Meet a dalek and an alien, with a drawing competition.

I think it was aimed at 10 year olds, but I did reckon fB should give it a go.

Entering 10 year olds is full of win too.

Here's the details...

On 13 November 2010 Daleks and other galactic creatures will be invading the Central Library.  There are a whole day's worth of sci-fi festivities starting at 10am and finishing at 3pm.  This includes a meet and greet with Doctor Who aliens, Dalek colouring competition for children, a sci-fi fancy dress competition for children and sci-fi writing talks with local author David Johnson.  For further information on the day's programme, contact the Central Library on 01793 463798

Think fB might just about get away with it....but Jayo I'm thinking you might not pass the CRB clearance.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15730665

It's one concept that belongs on the small screen.  Yates is a good shout to develop it but he's already talking about a radical transformation, which smacks of the last effort a turkey if ever there was one.

If they're going to do a film it needs to be done properly, which most likely means taking it away from the BBC drama department and handing it over to people who know what they're doing. They've also got the option of making it totally separate to the TV series, there doesn't even need to be very much in the way of a crossover - they could have a new Doctor or bring back one of the old ones pretty easily.

Will be good to see it on the big screen with a big budget. Not sure Hollywood will try and fuck with it too much as it's already a pretty big series on BBC America - it's watched by well over a million people.

Don't like the sound of this...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15730665

It's one concept that belongs on the small screen.  Yates is a good shout to develop it but he's already talking about a radical transformation, which smacks of the last effort a turkey if ever there was one.

Yates has swindon connections, learnt his trade and lived here for a long i think,

No, opened in 1973, closed in 2003

I went to the pictures in 65....to see Dr Who and the Daleks.   Peter Cushing played the Doctor and Roy Castle was a companion.   Got to see the organic bit inside the dalek shell....it was a bit slimy.

Oh thank god. A word has yet to be invented to define what you are Sonic, but you are one, and a total one at that.

A real classic watched that many a time usually on a Saturday early afternoon on the box.

Me. The entire Moffat era has left me utterly confused though so nothing new.

Nope. A good one and it cleverly resets the whole Russell T 'every episode has the be the end of fucking world with lasers and sharks and daleks and shark-daleks' thing. Now daleks can just be an enemy - one of many.

Did think it was of a bit of a Dalek retirement home, not an asylum.

I like Moffat but he can twist things too much and drag them out a bit too long. Tonights episode being another good example - in case you didn't realise it the bird on the planet is his next companion. Yes, the one that is dead and prior to being dead was a dalek. Which sounds like River Song all over again.

My prediction - the Doctor gets River Song up the duff and they give the kid to Amy and Rory to raise.

Certainly is, had to do a Google search to see where I recognised her from, and unfortunately it's Emmerdale Farm, she becomes the new companian midway through this serious when the Ponds leave (thankfully - as nice as Amy Pond is, she's bloody annoying).

I've been a fan of Who for yonks, I love Nu-Who to bits and will defend it to the death, but there were long parts of episodes in this series where I was shouting angrily at the screen.

THAT. WAS. SHITE. Seriously. What the fuck was the point of this series?!? Honestly?

Not sure I got it.

Were they saying he was The Doctor before he became The Doctor, making him generation zero? And that he did some really bad shit, albeit for a good reason? Which is why he changed his name to The Doctor?

The way I think it was supposed to work is that before he did bad shit (I'm guessing that'll tie into the whole nicking the Tardis/destroying the Timelords/Daleks at the end of the Time War), he went by his 'real' Gallifreyan name. After that he became The Doctor.

But then you have the stuff that has been set in place in previous Nu-Who about Gallifreyans choosing their names after they've looked into the time vortex when they're kids. So that makes no sense.

Did he say he took the name The Doctor after and because of what Not The Doctor did?

Or just that Not The Doctor didn't / chose not to go by the name The Doctor?

If it's the latter then it maybe makes sense and could relate to the Time War and he's a generation we didn't know about.

Wasn't The Doctor who stole the Tardis supposed to be young at the time?

 :banging:

Whatever it is it better tie into what he did during the time war, and it better not reveal his real name.

Stuff being confusing is not an excuse for bad writing.

The popular theory seems to be that John Hurt is an incarnation of the doctor between 8 and 9 who is responsible for ending the time war.

The photo below from the filming of the 50th anniversary special shows him in a blend of 8's victorian threads and 9's black leather jacket.
